Frank identifies third £60m top Tottenham target with Eze and Savinho

Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer plans stretch beyond potential deals for Man City’s Savinho and Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, as pointed out by reliable Lilywhites insider Paul O’Keefe.

Just two weeks remain of this summer window, and chairman Daniel Levy is running out of time to back new manager Thomas Frank with some much-needed additions.

The Premier League season is already underway, and Frank will now have an even greater idea of how his side need to strengthen in the next fortnight after their opener against Burnley on Saturday.

Right now, Spurs are hot on the heels of both Eze and Savinho.

Tottenham are in talks to sign the attacking duo in separate deals (Fabrizio Romano), as Levy attempts to compensate for the loss of Son Heung-min to LAFC and James Maddison to long-term injury.

While there is some way to go when it comes to signing Savinho, with Pep Guardiola playing down reports of an imminent move away for the injured winger, Eze is believed to be very keen on a move to N17.

The 27-year-old has informed Palace of his desire to join Frank at Tottenham, giving his green-light to the project, so it appears all there is left to do is find a full agreement with the Eagles.

That’ll be no easy feat, though, considering chairman Steve Parish is a notoriously difficult negotiator and won’t fancy losing the star playmaker after what has already been a very difficult summer at Selhurst Park.

The south Londoners are demanding around £68 million – the value of his now-expired release clause – and reports suggest Tottenham want to go far lower (Ben Jacobs).

Amidst their negotiations for Eze and Savinho, it is believed that Tottenham also want another centre-back.

This is backed up by Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, who explained their pursuit of a defender in a Q&A earlier this week.

As per O’Keefe, Frank and Spurs know exactly who they want to bolster their backline.

Tottenham identify Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie as top defender target

The insider reports that Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie is that man.

Piero Hincapie in action for Bayer Leverkusen

The Ecuador international played 32 Bundesliga matches as a mainstay under Xabi Alonso last season, but he could join the Spaniard out of Leverkusen’s exit door amid interest from Spurs and Chelsea.

Frank has green-lit a potential Tottenham move for Hincapie, with the club identifying him as their “ideal” left centre-back target.

Other reports indicate that Leverkusen value him at around £60 million, and some South American media sources suggest that Chelsea are ready to bid for Hincapie, so Tottenham will need to get moving here.

Priya Mishra sets up easy win for Giants

The captain Ashleigh Gardner chipped in with 52 as Giants chased down 144 with 12 balls remaining

Mithali Raj impressed with Priya Mishra’s talent

Gujarat Giants were inspired by Priya Mishra’s three-wicket haul and captain Ashleigh Gardner’s breezy 52 to post a comprehensive six-wicket win over UP Warriorz in their second home game of the WPL 2025. Giants were a much-improved outfit with the ball and on the field, and followed it up with a clinical batting effort where the likes of Harleen Deol and Deandra Dottin also chipped in, to chase down a modest 144 in Vadodara with 12 balls remaining. With the injured Alyssa Healy not available and Chamari Athapaththu making way for Alana King, Warriorz lacked power up front. New captain Deepti Sharma’s 39 and Sophie Ecclestone’s excellent bowling performance went in vain as Giants bounced back from the opening-day loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru to get off the mark early in the tournament.Related

Gardner hits second fifty as Giants captainGardner carried on from where she left off, scoring yet another crucial fifty to lift Giants from 2 for 2. After her unbeaten 79 in the opener against RCB, Gardner came in to bat as early as the second over after Giants lost Beth Mooney and D Hemalatha early. She got going by scoring back-to-back fours off the debutant fast bowling-allrounder Kranti Goud in the third over. She was particularly brutal against Saima Thakor, who conceded 20 runs in the fifth over. Two of the three sixes of the over were hit by Gardner, one over long-on and another over deep midwicket. She used her feet well to charge down the ground when necessary and converted full tosses into fours or sixes. With Laura Wolvaardt, she stitched a crucial 55-run stand for the third wicket. She brought up her fifty off 28 balls, with a humongous six over deep square leg off Alana King after flicking away the previous ball to deep backward square leg for four. Overall, she hit five fours and three sixes. With 131 runs in two matches at an impressive strike rate of 195.52, Gardner is the leading run-scorer of the tournament as of now.Dottin’s all-round performanceAfter Tahlia McGrath dismissed Gardner in the 12th over, Giants needed 58 off 49 balls. But Dottin came in and swung her bat straightaway over midwicket to collect her first six, off King. Putting her power game to use, she punished McGrath for two more fours in the next over and released pressure off Giants. The dew factor and a few dropped catches didn’t help Warriorz either as Deol also played the role of anchor to keep the chase at a healthy run-rate. Deol made an unbeaten 34 off 30 balls while Dottin hit a quickfire 33 that included three fours and two sixes.Earlier, with the ball, Dottin struck in the second over, dismissing Kiran Navgire with an inswinger and then knocked off Uma Chetry with a short ball in the tenth over when Warriorz were just trying to steady the ship after a few early wickets.Ashleigh Gardner smacked a fifty off 28 balls•WPL

Mishra’s momentum-changing overWarriorz were 73 for 3 after 10 overs, and with McGrath and Grace Harris yet to come, they would have hoped for a lift-off. But Mishra landed a big blow by removing both the Australians in the span of three deliveries. For McGrath, she bowled a googly that skidded on in line of middle and off and scrapped past the batter’s inside edge and hit the pad first, and then off the bat and onto the pads. McGrath reviewed the lbw decision but it was struck down.A ball later, Mishra bowled another googly, a flighted delivery on off, and Harris went for a big slog across the line only to be beaten on the inside edge as the ball crashed onto the stumps. Mishra let out a loud roar after producing a statement performance.Warriorz struggle with the batAfter being asked to bat, Warriorz decided to open with Kiran Navgire and Vrinda Dinesh, who had suffered a shoulder injury last season after playing four matches. But neither of them made an impact with Dottin and Gardner striking inside the powerplay.Uma Chetry, at No.3, also toiled to middle a lot of deliveries but utilised her strong bottom hand to smash four boundaries in her 27-ball 24. With Deepti at the other end, the duo produced a 51-run partnership to rescue Warriorz from early jitters. Deepti, who had hit an unbeaten 88 against Giants last year while batting at No.4 the only other time before Sunday, was the positive of the lot and smashed 39 off 27. She used her trademark sweep shots to good effect and also kept the scorecard ticking in the middle overs with pull shots and punches off the backfoot. Eventually, Deepti was also dismissed by Mishra in the 15th over.Despite the late flourish at the end of the innings thanks to Thakor and King, Warriorz finished with an under-par total. The Ecclestone vs Wolvaardt battleWolvaardt was keen to charge down the track and disrupt the bowlers early into the chase but was challenged by Ecclestone. Though the scorecard might not offer a glimpse into the battle, Warriorz were briefly in the game, thanks to Ecclestone. After the England left-arm spinner picked up her first wicket off the second over, she was given another over in the powerplay.Wolvaardt shimmied down and smashed one down the ground for four after missing Ecclestone’s first ball of the fourth over. Four dot balls followed. Eventually, Wolvaardt fell to Ecclestone for 22 off 24 balls. In a moment of indecision that left her neither playing forward nor back, she was beaten on pace in the ninth over. Overall, Wolvaardt scored six runs off Ecclestone’s ten balls with only three scoring shots in it.Ecclestone finished with figures of 2 for 16 but that wasn’t enough for Warriorz.

Once cost £50m: Sunderland can land bigger coup than Xhaka in PL "fighter"

The transfer window has passed by chaotically, leaving Sunderland now with just a few days before their Premier League adventure officially gets underway.

There will be lots of excitement in the air as the Black Cats’ bumper 11 new signings take to the field for the first time this season against West Ham United.

However, there will be equal amounts of nerves also hanging over proceedings, as Regis Le Bris attempts to get a tune out of all those fresh faces immediately to ensure positive results are picked up from the first game to the last.

Thankfully, when contests are going to test the resolve of the top-flight newcomers, the Black Cats should be able to rely on Granit Xhaka, who is undoubtedly the most experienced Premier League body in the squad, at the moment.

Why Xhaka could be crucial this season

Amazingly, the 32-year-old battler has even taken on the club captaincy this pre-season, as he prepares to be the leader Sunderland needs on the pitch to ensure safety is comfortably reached.

He will be one figure who will make sure the standards are lifted, considering he has amassed 225 Premier League appearances to date as a performer unafraid to get stuck in and be fierce, which lends itself well to a tense battle against the drop.

On top of launching himself into tackles galore – with 368 attempted during that long stay in the top-flight with Arsenal – the Swiss international is also capable of a moment of magic from outside the area when firing home an audacious strike, with a reasonable 17 goals and 24 assists also next to his Premier League tally.

Landing Xhaka for just £17m really does show off what Sunderland’s ambitions are this season, therefore, as they try to make survival look a breeze.

However, there is an even bigger coup potentially in the works if Sunderland can pull off this other crazy buy, as they attempt to boldly land an even more seasoned top-flight performer…

Sunderland could land a bigger signing than Xhaka

£132m has now been spent on the end of the Black Cats this summer, with the latest splurge seeing Omar Alderete arrive from Getafe for a modest £10m fee.

He is another pick-up who holds significant experience of a top league in La Liga. Still, he will be forgotten about quite swiftly if Sunderland can pull off the ridiculous signature of Raheem Sterling – a player who cost Chelsea £50m just three years ago.

This standout move has been tentatively speculated by Mackem News, with Sterling in desperate need of repairing his damaged Premier League reputation after an instantly forgettable loan stint with Xhaka’s former side.

If he can get back to the heights of his Manchester City heyday, Sunderland will be laughing, as they go about winning themselves another top-flight-capable performer who could fire home the goals to drag the Black Cats up the rankings.

While his career has since fallen to the wayside after exiting Manchester, it goes without saying that Sterling is an immense talent in the Premier League when firing on all cylinders, as seen in his colossal haul of 123 strikes in the difficult division from 396 games.

These constant moments of class for Man City would push Pep Guardiola’s men on to win four top-flight titles, with the trusty Englishman causing all sorts of havoc down the right wing to pick up all this shiny silverware, leading to pundit Chris Sutton even heralding him as “world class” back in 2020.

Xhaka would never swim in the same levels of success in North London, unfortunately, with Sterling also more hungry to prove a point than his Swiss counterpart, arguably, considering his past couple of seasons of underwhelming performances at both Arsenal and Chelsea. As noted by ex-England boss Gareth Southgate, he is a “fighter”.

If he can reach his best once again, he will be a very effective weapon for Le Bris to possess, knowing what the Frenchman managed to get out of Enzo Le Fee last season, after his own career had hit a similar crossroads.

You would imagine Sunderland are close to wrapping up all of their hectic business soon.

But, if they can land Sterling just in time before September’s deadline, this would be a fantastic coup, particularly if his goals and assists make all the difference in the battle to beat relegation.

Liverpool's homegrown Guehi: FSG may regret selling Anfield "monster"

Now that the summer transfer window is done and dusted, Liverpool will feel they are in a strong position to retain the Premier League title they won so confidently under Arne Slot’s management last season.

The Reds had just parted ways with iconic manager Jurgen Klopp, and many expected his successor, who had found success with Feyenoord in the Netherlands, would fall by the wayside in keeping with comparable circumstances at Arsenal and Manchester United.

And despite opting against a trigger-happy transfer window, Slot’s Liverpool knuckled down with the options available, giving rise to new heroes such as Ryan Gravenberch in the number six role.

Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo for Liverpool

But now that Liverpool are at the top, they are determined to stay there, bolstering their ranks with superstars like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, as well as many more, including Hugo Ekitike, Isak’s rival at number nine and with three goals and an assist from his first four outings in Red.

However, it didn’t all go the way of sporting director Richard Hughes, with a deadline-day deal for Marc Guehi falling through after Crystal Palace failed to land a suitable replacement and Oliver Glasner threatened to walk.

Could it prove a significant blow for the Merseysiders?

Why Liverpool wanted Guehi

Over the past four years with Palace, Guehi has gone from strength to strength and established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout centre-backs.

Said to have been an “absolute gem” by former Reds coach Michael Beale, who also coached him during his formative years in Chelsea’s academy, from the start, it’s no surprise that Guehi’s performances for club and country over the past few years have earned Liverpool’s vested interest.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates scoring their second goal

With Ibrahima Konate now in the final year of his contract at Anfield and Virgil van Dijk having turned 34 in July, it felt necessary that FSG green-lit the signing of a new centre-half, and indeed Liverpool pushed to sign Bournemouth prodigy Dean Huijsen before he signed for Real Madrid.

But Liverpool did win the race for Italy star Giovanni Leoni, who, aged 18, is regarded as one of the best defensive prospects in the world, and put pen to paper on a £30m transfer.

But Guehi would have added proven quality to the ranks, and it’s anticipated that Liverpool will return for the Three Lions star next summer.

However, maybe Liverpool’s worries would have been eased if they had kept their homegrown version of Guehi at the club this season.

Liverpool already sold their own Guehi

Much of the reasoning behind Liverpool’s decision to sell Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in a £35m deal this summer made sense, but the centre-half had showcased his potential under Klopp, and he may yet become one of Europe’s leading defenders.

However, much of Quansah’s gains made across a brilliant breakout year in 2023/24 were undone when Slot took Klopp’s place, hooking him at half-time during the opening game of the season, a 2-0 win over newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

Slot commented post-match that Liverpool were struggling for success in the duel, but it perhaps proved a psychological blow for the up-and-comer, who thereafter was benched for 11 successive league fixtures and started only three further matches before the end of the campaign.

Still, he had previously been hailed as an “absolute monster” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and certainly boasts the range of passing and movement on the ball to emulate the style Liverpool were going for with the signing of Guehi.

Integral in winning the Carabao Cup as Klopp bowed out after nearly nine years, Quansah started regularly toward the end of the Premier League campaign, completing 89% of his passes, winning 64% of his duels, as per Sofascore, and looking very much at home alongside the redoubtable Van Dijk..

Taking that term and comparing it with Guehi’s recent effort with the Eagles, you perhaps begin to see that Liverpool might have already had their own version in the ranks.

Sure, Leverkusen offered a sizeable figure for the 22-year-old, and Liverpool knew his chances of consistent minutes across the season were slim, but Quansah could have played a part, allowed to develop further as his experience grew under Slot’s wing.

While he remained a fringe player throughout, the England U21 international stepped into the campaign and popped up with some big moments after the new year, especially when the Reds came under the cosh against Wolverhampton Wanderers and required some big defending.

While it would be anticipated that Guehi’s ball-playing and other more progressive metrics would increase upon leaving Palace for Liverpool, the fact that Quansah managed to showcase a proficiency in such a system makes an interesting comment on the player he could now become in the Bundesliga.

FSG will be content after inserting a €60m (£51m) buyback clause into his contract with Die Werkself, but having now missed out on Guehi, the Anfield side might look back with hindsight at having allowed a player of significant potential and similar attributes to have left earlier in the window.

Leoni is a potential superstar, but Liverpool will need to ensure they do not overburden the teenager after only a few steps on English shores.

Had Quansah, a defender who has played 58 matches for Liverpool, scoring three goals, providing three assists, and winning several titles, stayed put, Slot’s side might have that final bit of quality and depth needed as they stare at a promising season with many forks in the road.

How Liverpool nearly signed Cristiano Ronaldo for £4m on £20,000-a-week deal

Liverpool have signed some brilliant players from abroad, with the likes of Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez enjoying their first taste of English football at Anfield.

More recently, the likes of Alisson and Mohamed Salah have transformed the Reds after swapping Roma for Liverpool. However, those at Anfield almost signed Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2003, with the Reds agreeing to pay the superstar just £20,000-a-week.

Ronaldo, as we know, would move to England with Manchester United, starring against Liverpool in the Premier League and becoming a world star under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Portuguese icon then went to Real Madrid in one of the most high-profile transfers of all time, scoring goals for fun at the Bernabeu.

Things could have been very different for Ronaldo in England, though, prior to his £12m+ move to Old Trafford.

Liverpool agreed deal to sign Cristiano Ronaldo for £4m

Talking previously to The Athletic, relayed by One Football, former Liverpool assistant manager Phil Thompson shared details on the Reds’ proposed move to sign Ronaldo from Sporting CP.

He stated that Liverpool were set to pay a total fee of just £4m for Ronaldo, who was set to earn £1m-a-year (£20,000-a-week) on Merseyside.

However, with the deal progressing nicely, Thompson and then Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier were left stunned after seeing on Sky Sports that Ronaldo had instead signed for Man Utd.

A case of what could have been for Liverpool with Ronaldo, and Houllier and Thompson ended up signing Harry Kewell from Leeds United instead.

‘Changed the way of thinking of the central midfielder’ – Sergio Busquets redefined the defensive midfield role and departs Inter Miami at the right time

The legendary No. 6 has announced his retirement from football, giving himself the opportunity to leave before his powers truly wane.

There was a funny sequence of events that happened multiple times every game when Sergio Busquets first came to MLS. He would do Busquets thing, dropping from midfield to receive the ball deep. Soccer fans know the movements. The center backs split, Busquets lumbers back towards his own goal, just in time for the pass to come. Busquets receives on the half turn, swivels those jangly legs, and with a pivot of the hips shuffles and turns his body forward. It was the basis of what made him so excellent at Barcelona – the model of a modern defensive midfielder.

The challenge of doing it in La Liga, of course, was the on ball pressure. Teams had figured out that in order to stifle, cutting off the outlet to Busquets might be a good start. But Busquets adjusted all the same. The pass would come. A defender would bite. Busquets would shrug them off and start an attacking move. A lot of the time – during Barca's heyday – the ball would soon end up in the back of the opponents' net.

And so when he came to MLS, Busquets expected much of the same. In his first start against Atlanta United in the Leagues Cup, Busquets went about that familiar routine: make the run, receive the pass, shrug off the defender. But as he turned in one smooth motion, almost expecting contact, none appeared. Busquets found himself remarkably open. That singular moment established the pattern of Busquets' MLS tenure. For Barcelona and his national team, he was the perfect guy to play through pressure and slow the game down when everything seemed so frantic – with and without the ball.

For Inter Miami, and in MLS, Busquets was charged with a different role: create, give the ball to Messi, and plug gaps. Soon it will be all over. Busquets announced Thursday night that he will retire from professional soccer at the end of the season. And even if Busquets isn't ending his career playing the same gorgeous tiki-taka football in the way he started it, this feels like the right time to call it a day.

Get the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowGetty ImagesThe glue that held it all together

You've probably heard the Pep Guardiola quote by now. Except, Pep Guardiola never said it. Vincente Del Bosque, then Spain's manager, uttered the words that became part of the Busquets lore: "If you watch the game, you don’t see Busquets. But if you watch Busquets, you see the whole game.”

Those words became the cop-out for describing the defensive midfielder, a part of soccer canon. Football is more complex than 19-word platitudes. But this one has stood the test of time. Del Bosque is right, in some ways. The broader point, the bit that sticks, is that Busquets isn't always the most eye-catching footballer. But everything runs through him. For Spain, you were probably watching Xavi or Andres Iniesta. For Barcelona, you were probably watching Messi, or Xavi or Iniesta (an all-time team, by the way). For Miami, you were, once again, probably watching Messi.

But Busquets was the glue that held it all together. He was, in many ways, the early embodiment of Pep Guardiola's footballing philosophy. Guardiola was an excellent defensive midfielder in his own right, and knew that when he took charge of Barca that he needed a No. 6 to pace his side. The story of his discovery is a bit apocryphal. Supposedly, Guardiola happened to be at a Barcelona reserve game one day, when then-youth coach Tito Vilanova poked fun at a gangly center back for being far too slow. Guardiola was awestruck, though, by his ability to play under pressure. So he called him up to Barca's senior side, made him a defensive midfielder. And the rest is history.

AdvertisementGettyXavi-Iniesta-Busquets

The ensuing years were, effectively, a masterclass of what a modern midfield could look like. Guardiola, as Barcelona manager, changed the way that many viewed football. It was no secret that he drew inspiration from the total football of Ajax and Holland. But his version of that approach was a little different. Guardiola wanted control of all three thirds of the pitch. Simplistically, the best way to do that was by having the ball and going forward as much as possible. You can't concede if your opponent never has possession. It's called Tiki-Taka. And of course, that's what made headlines. After all, this was the sexy stuff: Xavi, Iniesta, Busi – the perfect midfield triangle for club and country. You couldn't get the ball off them.

But what was more important for Busquets, perhaps, was the role he played when opponents have the ball. Guardiola, to this day, has a fundamental fear of being counterattacked. In his vision of football, transitions are deadly. Defensive shape is vital, and can be coached. But transitions are when chaos ensues. You really can't prepare for an opponent might hit you on the break. Well, Busquets went part of the way to solving that. Guardiola decided as Barca manager that the best solution to losing the ball was to win it back as soon as possible.

If his team couldn't – whether that be due to defensive inefficiencies or the opponent just being good in possession – he would ask them to drop. And Busquets was the architect of that. He knew when to step and cut a passing lane. He knew when to foul at the right time and gleefully take some of the best yellow cards you will see. This is where those defensive instincts came in. Busquets' reading of the game was unparalleled.

Getty Images Results, influence, and remarkable success

The results were accordingly immense. Barca, under Guardiola, were the best team on the planet. And it wasn't particularly close. They won a treble in his first season in charge. He won the La Liga title three times in a row. His crowning achievement, perhaps, was the 2010-11 Champions League final win over Man United, a game that left even the great Sir Alex Ferguson in awe. And Spain weren't bad, either. They won the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championship in 2012, Busquets anchored the side in both triumphs.

At a club level, Guardiola kept innovating, toying with different combinations. Messi played on the wing, and then as a false nine. He experimented with Xavi playing a little higher up and Iniesta dropping deep. He got rid of Zlatan Ibrahimovic because he didn't fit the system and famously hooked Thierry Henry when he didn't follow instructions, despite the Frenchman having scored two wonderful goals in the game. But for every change, Busquets was the one constant, anchoring the team.

Accordingly, everyone decided to try to find the next version of the player. It gave birth to a whole generation of finely tuned defensive midfielders, all trying to do the same thing. There is a thread to be drawn from Busquets, to N'Golo Kante, to Casemiro, to Fabinho, to Rodri. None, of course, is quite the same. But imitation was the purest form of flattery.

"He was a player who changed the way of thinking of the central midfielder," Javier Mascherano said in a media availability Friday morning. "There would be no Rodri without Busi. That's my opinion. And well, he has created a school."

GettyThe final days at Barca

But as Busquets aged, his athletic deficiencies became more pronounced. Luis Enrique figured out how to use him effectively from 2014-2016 while at Barcelona. After that, though, a series of managers failed to protect his gangly legs. Barca were no longer as effective on the ball and too disorganized without it. There were calls from some in the Barca fanbase to move Busquets on. Perhaps his time was done.

There would be one last swan song, though. Xavi, his old teammate, figured out a formula to get the last juices of football out of him at an elite level during Barca's title winning season in 2023. Busquets could no longer cover so much ground. But Frenkie De Jong could. So, Xavi set up a box midfield and played De Jong alongside Busquets.

The result was a fine last season in Catalonia. De Jong put out fires here, there and everywhere. Busquets won tackles and shuffled the ball around. He left Barcelona with a La Liga winner's medal around his neck. It was a perfect farewell. Then it was off to South Beach.

Celtic star who's "built like a brick" is becoming the next Kyogo

It is no secret that the summer transfer window did not end in the way that Celtic or their supporters wanted it to, particularly on deadline day last week.

Sebastian Tounekti was the only signing on deadline day, as the Hoops failed to sign any strikers, and the club published a lengthy statement attempting to explain their failings a few days later.

In July, during pre-season, Brendan Rodgers explained that the club needed to bring in more quality in the attacking areas of the pitch because of the players sold this year.

The Celtic manager said: “I think it’s bringing goals to the squad. Especially when you score four goals, it seems like you’re okay. But we lost an important player in Kyogo [Furuhashi] in January. He brought us a lot of goals. We lost Nicolas Kuhn. He brought us a lot of goals. Matt O’Riley even last summer.”

On top of that, the Scottish Premiership champions also allowed Adam Idah to join Swansea on deadline day, which meant that the club had allowed Idah and Kyogo to leave in back-to-back windows without investing in a significant signing to replace them.

Of course, Kelechi Iheanacho then came through the door on a free transfer the day after deadline day, but the lack of quality in the number nine role is a concern.

Why losing Kyogo Furuhashi was a blow for Celtic

It is fair to say that Kyogo was not at the very best of his game when the Hoops decided to sell him to Ligue 1 side Rennes for a fee of £10m towards the end of the January transfer window.

The Japan international only scored ten goals from 13.62 xG in the Premiership during the first half of the season, per FotMob, which shows that he had been incredibly wasteful in front of goal up to that point.

Bringing in £10m for a 30-year-old striker with that return in the Premiership was not a bad deal on paper, by any means, but it is the lack of reaction to that sale that has ultimately made it a blow.

Kyogo, for all of his faults at the end of his time at the club, was almost a guaranteed goalscorer. He scored 85 goals in 165 matches for the Hoops and hit double figures for goals in all four of his Premiership campaigns, per Transfermarkt.

The Japanese marksman, even though his finishing powers waned, knew how to score goals on a regular basis in Scotland, and Celtic are currently struggling for goals.

As you can see in the table above, Johnny Kenny is the only striker to have scored a goal for Celtic after four matches in the Premiership this season, whilst the Hoops also failed to score in two qualifying games against Kairat.

It is now up to Iheanacho, who only scored four goals in 26 matches in the 2024/25 campaign, per Sofascore, to step up and provide the goals that Rodgers’ side have lacked.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Meanwhile, Celtic appear to be brewing their next version of Kyogo Furuhashi in Japan international Daizen Maeda, and not in a positive way.

Why Daizen Maeda is on his way to becoming the new Kyogo Furuhashi

As aforementioned, Kyogo’s finishing left a lot to be desired in his last six months at the club before he completed a January move away from Parkhead at the start of this year.

Maeda is currently in danger of following that same path after an underwhelming start to the 2025/26 campaign and some worrying quotes about his future in Glasgow.

Speaking after the window closed, the forward said: “I received an offer. I had been telling the club that I wanted to take the next step, but Celtic hadn’t been able to strengthen their squad properly, so in the end they told me they couldn’t let me go. Personally, I had agreed, so I wanted to take on the challenge. The national team also delayed my joining, and I asked Celtic until the last day, but it didn’t happen.”

These quotes, particularly the one about wanting to take the next step, suggest that Maeda is not planning to stay at Parkhead for many more years, which now puts his short-term future in doubt.

Now that clubs know that he wants to take that next step in his career, the January transfer window may present the Hoops with opportunities to cash in on him, just like it did with Kyogo at the start of this year.

Maeda won the Premiership Player of the Year award last season for his terrific performances in the division. He racked up 16 goals from 12.76 xG, per FotMob, which shows that he was lethal in front of goal.

However, the Japan international has failed to score in four appearances in the league so far this season, missing two ‘big chances’, and Rodgers will be hoping that he is not following in Kyogo’s footsteps.

As you can see in the table above, Kyogo’s incredible 27-goal haul in the 2022/23 Premiership season turned out to be more of a flash in the pan, as he significantly underperformed his xG and only scored 24 goals in the next two campaigns combined.

Maeda may not have scored 27 last season for the Scottish giants, but he is already in danger of his 16-goal haul looking like a flash in the pan after a slow start to the season in front of goal.

The Japanese star was hailed as “phenomenal” by interim Rangers boss Barry Ferguson, who also described the forward as being “built like a brick”, but he has not looked at his phenomenal best so far this term.

Hopefully, Maeda can get to his best to avoid becoming the next Kyogo by being another striker whose finishing form falls off a cliff after an impressive season.

On top of that, Rodgers and the supporters will also be hoping that he does not become the next Kyogo by moving on from Parkhead in the upcoming January window.
