He's perfect for Mbeumo: Man Utd enter talks to sign "exceptional" PL star

Manchester United’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo feels as though it has been going on for months now, with no deal yet agreed for the Brentford star this summer.

The Cameroonian has been a key target for many months now, unsurprisingly so given his record of 20 Premier League goals for the Bees throughout 2024/25.

The Red Devils have so far had two separate offers rejected for the 25-year-old, with Ruben Amorim yet to get his hands on the player who could transform the club’s fortunes in attacking areas.

Keith Andrews’ side are said to be holding out for £65m to part ways with their star man during the current window, but the sides are yet to agree to such a figure, with United’s latest offer totalling £62.5m including add-ons.

It would be a huge disappointment to miss out on the forward, given the huge attempts made for his signature, but other targets have been drawn up over the last couple of weeks as a result of the delay.

The latest on United’s hunt for new signings this summer

Southampton forward Tyler Dibling was a name that was thrown into the mix last week over a potential move to join United, with his current employers demanding a fee in the region of £55m.

Other attackers such as Christopher Nkunku, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Benjamin Sesko have all been touted with moves to join the Red Devils this summer.

However, other areas of the pitch have also been subject to interest, with the hierarchy currently exploring a deal to sign Brighton star Pervis Estupiñán, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

He claims that the club have already held talks with the player and his representatives over a move to Old Trafford, after he made 30 league appearances last campaign.

Jacobs also states that the Seagulls will be open to allowing the 27-year-old to depart this summer, after securing the signing of Maxim De Cuyper, but doesn’t state the fee any deal would cost Amorim’s side.

Why United’s latest target would be perfect for Mbeumo

Despite the delay around a deal for Mbeumo in recent weeks, there’s still a strong feeling that the club will complete a deal for his services at some stage this window.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

It would be such a shame to miss out on the forward, especially considering the tiny difference of just £2.5m in valuation between the Red Devils and the Bees.

The player himself has previously expressed his desire to move to Old Trafford, which should only bolster their chances of landing the Cameroonian international in the coming weeks.

However, he will need to be aided in his attempt for success should he move to the club, with Mbeumo unable to transform the Red Devils’ fortunes all by himself.

The addition of fellow attacker Matheus Cunha will certainly help him in the final third, but Estupinan could also play a vital role in the Bees star’s hunt to be a success in the North West.

pervis-estupinan-liverpool-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

Despite being a full-back, the Ecuadorian international has showcased his talents higher up the pitch, potentially playing perfectly into the hands of Mbeumo as a result.

Estupinan, who’s been labelled “exceptional” by journalist Ryan Adsett, registered 4.9 progressive passes per 90 along with 3.9 passes into the final third – having the tools to provide Mbeumo with opportunities in attacking areas.

He also completed 56% of the take-ons he attempted, whilst making 2.3 carries into the final third, able to overlap the forwards and add a new dimension to Amorim’s attack.

However, despite his attacking capabilities, he’s also been just as impressive without the ball, making 1.6 tackles per 90 and 1.4 interceptions per 90, arguably being the perfect wing-back in United’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Whilst it’s unclear how much a deal for the full-back would cost this summer, it’s evident that he has all the tools needed to thrive on the left side of United’s system.

If he can form a partnership with Mbeumo at Old Trafford, it would further add to the quality of any addition, helping the side massively in their quest for success in the near future.

Último dia da janela aberta! Relembre movimentação do Santos no mercado

Mitchell Starc: Green absence changes dynamic for quicks

Mitchell Starc has conceded Cameron Green’s absence will change the dynamic of Australia’s Test team, hinting pace reserves may be needed to get through the summer.Green’s season-ending back surgery has left Australia’s selectors with several questions for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beyond just who opens the batting with Usman Khawaja.Namely, the allrounder’s absence has the potential to have a flow-on effect for Australia’s aging pace attack, with an increased workload likely against India.Related

  • Green out for the season as he takes surgery option

Captain Pat Cummins had stated before the start of the summer that Australia were likely to rely heavily on Green and fellow allrounder Mitchell Marsh, particularly if India bat for long periods of time.Starc, Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will almost certainly start the summer as three quicks, but Scott Boland, Michael Neser and Sean Abbott all now loom on the fringes.”It will always change the dynamic when you take a genuine allrounder like a Cameron Green, or with England when you take a Ben Stokes, out,” Starc said. “When you have that genuine allrounder who has been part of a group for a while … you get into a bit of a routine of having that extra bowling option.”I don’t know what the dynamic of that line-up is going to be, there is a lot of talk around that opening spot and Mitch [Marsh] bowling as well.”It’s not completely foreign. We’ve had series in the past where we haven’t had an allrounder at all.”We’ve had to take some of that workload, and Gaz [Nathan Lyon] has probably had to bowl a bit extra as well.”Mitchell Starc last played a Shield match in the 2020-21 final•Getty Images

Starc will begin his red-ball summer against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield on Sunday, with Steve Smith and Lyon also playing.Hazlewood will then play in the Blues’ following match against Queensland, with Starc to be rested.Australia have five Tests in seven weeks against India, with the longest gap being a 10-day break between the series opener in Perth and second Test in Adelaide.Starc said Australia’s bowlers had always taken an extended-squad approach, with several factors coming into whether the first-choice group’s workloads were managed.”That’s been the mindset for a number of years now, with overseas tour or a home series and the mentality of how gruelling a summer or series can be,” Starc said. “It’s been spoken about, if you have four or five Tests that go four days, the extra day between games [can be important].”There is obviously a big gap between the first and second Test and the third and fourth Test. That may play a part as well.”We don’t know what wickets we’ll get, we don’t know how successful or unsuccessful we will be.”Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon played unchanged through the last four-Test Border-Gavaskar series at home in 2020-21. They also did likewise in the five-Test home summer last season, with Australia losing the last Test at the Gabba on both those occasions.”There are too many factors to sit here at the start and say this is what is going to happen,” Starc said. “But there are certainly times where you feel the grind of five Tests.”Meanwhile, Starc has declared there is no reason why NSW teenage prodigy Sam Konstas won’t be able to handle Test cricket if he was called up next month. One week after blazing twin tons against South Australia, Konstas shared a net session with Steve Smith on Friday at NSW training. While Starc would not be drawn into whether Konstas’ time should come this summer, he had seen enough to believe the young talent could succeed.”There’s no reason [for him] not to [handle it],” Starc said. “He’s obviously got the talent, got the work ethic, he’s a lovely young man.”Time will tell. If he’s not picked this summer then I am sure runs on the board will help him in the long run.”

Can Santi Giménez lead Mexico to redemption vs. South Korea? Projecting El Tri’s starting XI

El Tri will face South Korea at GEODIS Park in Nashville after a disappointing 0-0 draw with Japan

Mexico return to action this Tuesday following a lackluster performance against Japan, where manager Javier Aguirre and his squad came under heavy criticism after a goalless draw at the Oakland Coliseum. Even Aguirre himself admitted afterward that Mexico didn’t deserve the win, but also stressed that progress is more important than scorelines at this stage.

Despite winning the Nations League and Gold Cup earlier this year, the “Vasco” still appears far from settling on a definitive roster for the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico will kick off on June 11 at the Estadio Azteca. The coach has also faced scrutiny for some of his call-up decisions – both for players included and those left out. He is likely to make some changes heading into his match against South Korea Tuesday.

Midfielder Edson Álvarez has been ruled out for three weeks with a muscle injury, meaning he will miss the clash with the Taegeuk Warriors. Other regular starters against Japan – Jorge Sánchez, Jesús Gallardo, Roberto Alvarado, and Raúl Jiménez – could also be dropped to the bench. It remains to be seen whether Aguirre sticks with the same core from Saturday or opts for significant changes.

Now, after a flat showing against Japan, the pressure is on. are expected to deliver a stronger performance against South Korea, as another disappointing result could increase the pressure on Aguirre.

GOAL projects the lineup Aguirre is likely to field on Tuesday.

    Goalkeeper

    GOAL's pick: Luis Ángel Malagón

Malagón has played the most full matches (13) under Javier Aguirre’s current tenure. The Club América goalkeeper has faced criticism for his recent performances, but all signs point to him being Mexico’s starting keeper at the World Cup if things continue this way. It remains to be seen whether Aguirre will make any changes in goal for the match against South Korea.

Meanwhile, backup goalkeeper Raúl Rangel holds the record for the most appearances on the bench (15) during Aguirre’s stint in charge. If Aguirre makes a change, Tuesday could present a good opportunity for him to finally earn a start.

    Defenders

GOAL's pick: Rodrigo Huescas, César Montes, Johan Vásquez, Mateo Chávez

Against Japan, the starting full-backs were Jorge Sánchez and Jesús Gallardo, but for the match at GEODIS Park, expect to see Rodrigo Huescas of Copenhagen and Mateo Chávez of AZ Alkmaar in the lineup. This back four could well be the ideal option heading into the next World Cup, with Huescas currently one of the Mexican players in the best form and Chávez considered one of the country’s top prospects, having made the jump to Europe this year. Unless Aguirre decides to test another option, the center-back pairing should remain unchanged for Tuesday’s clash.

    Midfielders

GOAL's pick: Erik Lira, Marcel Ruiz, Erick Sánchez

With Álvarez sidelined due to injury, his usual replacement is Erik Lira, as was the case on Saturday when “El Machín” had to leave the field. Marcel Ruiz could retain his spot in the lineup, providing creativity and versatility to the team. In place of Orbelín Pineda, Erick Sánchez is expected to start; at Club América, he not only serves as a solid defensive midfielder but has also proven capable of making key runs into the box. There is a slight uncertainty here, as Carlos Rodríguez could also feature in the starting eleven, possibly replacing Ruiz instead.

GOAL's pick: Diego Lainez, Santiago Gimenez, Alexis Vega

Rotate or keep the same attack? Javier Aguirre fielded Roberto Alvarado, Alexis Vega, and Raúl Jiménez on Saturday. While all three have been regular starters under Aguirre, they still haven’t fully found the chemistry needed to turn chances into goals. Diego Lainez could start in place of Alvarado, while Santiago Giménez might take Raúl Jiménez’s spot. The key lineup question revolves around San Diego FC's Hirving Lozano. Will he replace Alexis Vega from the start, or will he be introduced in the second half?

Jamie Smith joins England's senior ranks with two-year ECB contract

Wicketkeeper is big beneficiary as England contract 29 players for 2024-25 season

Andrew Miller31-Oct-2024England have signalled their intention to place Jamie Smith at the heart of their revival across formats, handing him a lucrative two-year ECB central contract that will commit him to their plans for both next year’s Ashes tour of Australia and the 2026 T20 World Cup.Smith, 24, was one of the breakout stars of England’s home Test summer, scoring a maiden Test hundred against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford, before being named as the PCA’s Young Player of the Year at their annual end-of-season awards dinner.Though his opportunities in white-ball cricket have so far been limited by his workload, Smith showed glimpses of his potential in the recent home ODI series against Australia, and though he is due to miss the Test tour of New Zealand as he goes on paternity leave, he looks set to be a central figure in England’s plans for their white-ball tour of India in January and the subsequent Champions Trophy.Fast bowler Gus Atkinson, another impressive addition to England’s plans across formats, has also received a two-year deal (a one-year extension of his existing offer) while Joe Root, Harry Brook and Mark Wood have been retained on the second of the three-year deals that they signed in the last round of contracts for 2023-24.ESPNcricinfo LtdWith Brendon McCullum already secured as England’s head coach across formats for the next three years, England have now tied both their red- and white-ball captains, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, to two-year deals. As reported last week, Stokes has agreed to extend the one-year deal that he signed last year, having then taken a punt that his value to the team would rise in the interim.Buttler’s deal, meanwhile, is a show of faith in England’s white-ball captain despite an absence from professional cricket that has now extended to five months as he recovers from a persistent calf injury. It comes on the same day that his long association with Rajasthan Royals was ended by his omission from their list of retained players for the 2025 IPL.England rejigged their contracts system in September 2023 to reflect the mounting pressure on international cricket from the T20 franchise circuit, with 18 of those initial 26 offers being multi-year deals. That policy came in for criticism, however, particularly in the wake of England’s disastrous 50-over World Cup defence, because it limited the potential to overhaul an under-performing squad. Notably, 19 of this year’s 29 deals are for one year only, including that of Jonny Bairstow, who was dropped from all three formats earlier this year, midway through his two-year deal, and seems unlikely to feature in England’s plans in the near future.Related

In addition to Smith, four other players have signed their first central contracts: Shoaib Bashir, Phil Salt, Olly Stone and Will Jacks, who was the notable omission from England’s plans last time around. Three further players have been handed development contracts, including two new additions in Jacob Bethell and Josh Hull, and John Turner, the fast bowler who could make his England debut in the Caribbean this week.Seven players have been cut from England’s list for 2024-25, including Moeen Ali, Dawid Malan and James Anderson, who have retired from international cricket, and the fast bowlers Matthew Fisher and Saqib Mahmood, who had been on development contracts after making their Test debuts in the Caribbean in 2022.The most notable absentees, however, are Ollie Robinson and Ben Foakes, the Test wicketkeeper who made way for his Surrey team-mate Smith in the summer. Both men last featured on the tour of India in February, and their hopes of a recall in the current regime would now appear to be over.”The strength and depth of talent across England Men’s red and white-ball cricket is clear in the quality of players who are centrally contracted,” Rob Key, England men’s managing director, said. “These contracts reward the players we believe will play an important role for our England Men’s teams. Both our captains, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, have signed two-year central contracts that showcase the commitment of all the players to prioritise playing for their country.”I want to congratulate all the players who have signed new central contracts ahead of what is set to be an exciting period for England Men’s cricket.”

Newcastle chiefs confident £40m star with "nose for goals" is set to join

Newcastle United face a predicament in their striker department, but club chiefs are now confident one of their targets will join before the transfer deadline.

While on the Asia leg of their preseason tour, Eddie Howe held a press conference where he addressed poor player attitudes, stating: “You have to earn the right to train with us.”

Alexander Isak has not earned this right in the manager’s eyes, and has been “ordered to train separately from his teammates and stay away from a lunchtime training-ground barbecue”.

The departures of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, as well as the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, have led to an opening in Liverpool’s forward line that Arne Slot wants Isak to fill, and based on his behaviour, it’s clear that the Sweden international shares this desire.

With Isak causing issues in the dressing room, Howe has set his sights on a new Premier League-proven striker who wants to join the club.

Newcastle "confident" they can sign Wissa

GiveMeSport have reported that Newcastle are eyeing a double swoop of Yoane Wissa and Ollie Watkins following the club’s failure to sign Benjamin Sesko. Of the two players, Wissa looks the most likely to join, as “there is confidence a deal can be done for around £40m before the September 1st deadline”.

Yoane Wissa

The report indicates Wissa’s desire to play Champions League football and believes that will help them secure the move. Last week’s report from The I that Wissa had been “refusing to train in an attempt to push through a move” will also have boosted Howe’s confidence in getting the deal done.

Wissa would be the latest star to leave Brentford this summer, alongside club captain Christian Nørgaard and fellow forward Bryan Mbeumo. However, the club’s biggest loss this summer is undoubtedly Thomas Frank, who had managed the club since 2018.

Frank gambled on bringing in Wissa from Lorient in 2021, and in 2023, he poured praise on his development as a finisher: “Wissa, we knew, has always been a goalscorer. He scored seven goals in the first season and seven in the second in the Premier League, for a player that didn’t play much. It’s remarkable. I definitely think he is best as a 9. He’s got that nose for goals.”

Wissa is an underrated Premier League star

Although he might not have been the first name on Newcastle’s shopping list, he could still end up as one of the best signings this summer if they can get it across the line. Where Frank clearly saw Wissa’s value and potential, the Congo star has not always received the praise he deserves, sometimes falling under the shadow of players like Mbeumo and Ivan Toney.

Wissa’s record against the Premier League’s “Big Six” proves that he can perform in the toughest fixtures.

This impressive record is likely why he is such a high-value target for Howe. This will be Newcastle’s first season in the restructured Champions League, meaning they will face more big sides than ever before, so Wissa’s proven track record in the big games will potentially help them reach the later rounds.

Stokes, Potts replace Woakes, Atkinson in England XI

Tourists make two changes for second Multan Test with spin expected to play bigger role

Matt Roller14-Oct-2024Ben Stokes will return to captain England in Multan this week after two months sidelined with a torn hamstring. Stokes has stepped up his recovery in the past week and will replace Chris Woakes in one of two England changes from the first Test, with Matthew Potts also coming in for the rested Gus Atkinson.”I feel good. I’m looking forward to getting back on the field,” Stokes said ahead of his return. “I’ve worked really hard at the back end of my rehab period at home and throughout the last Test match as well. I’ve put myself through a fitness test, pretty much, over the last couple of days, and come through that pretty well.”England are braced for a lower-scoring second Test, with the match set to be played on the same strip as the one used for their innings win last week. The pitch has been heavily watered but has dried out in the sun during two practice days, and the used surface could bring both teams’ spinners into the game.Stokes has been bowling in training and will be England’s third seam option behind Potts and Brydon Carse, his Durham team-mates. It is a rare example of England picking three seamers from the same county. “It’s going to be a proud moment for the club,” he said. “Durham have a great record of producing England cricketers, and in particular fast bowlers.”On his own fitness to bowl, Stokes said: “I’ve obviously got to be sensible. Playing on a used wicket made the decision a little bit easier… We’ve got two workhorses in the team in Carsey and Potts who just keep going and going and going. But I’m available to bowl, and when I sense the time is right for me to come on and make an impact, there won’t be any doubts in my mind.”Related

England’s seamers all had a heavy workload in the first Test, despite their innings win: Atkinson bowled 39 overs, Carse 38 and Woakes 35. Atkinson and Woakes both played all six Tests of England’s home summer and have been rested, with a short turnaround between matches, while Carse should be much fresher after spending June, July and August serving a ban.”You’re looking at the last seven Test matches being pretty gruelling – in particular, the last one,” Stokes said. “Looking at the seamers we’ve got out here, this is a good time for them to have a rest and refresh the body. They’ve had a really big summer and put in really good performances, bowled a lot of overs. It’s a good time for them to get their feet up and have a break.”Ben Duckett retains his place at the top of the order after recovering from a dislocated thumb sustained on the second evening of the first Test, while Jamie Smith will shuffle back down to No. 7 to allow Stokes to return in his favoured role at No. 6.England have stuck with the same spinners – Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir – despite Bashir’s quiet first Test, in which he returned match figures of 1 for 156. Rehan Ahmed is the other spin option in their squad, while the Warwickshire and England Under-19s legspinner Tazeem Ali is on holiday in Pakistan and has been bowling in the nets this week.England XI: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Jamie Smith (wk), 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Matthew Potts, 10 Jack Leach, 11 Shoaib Bashir
