Sancho joined Chelsea on a season-long loan last summer after falling out of favour at Manchester United. Although the initial loan agreement included a purchase clause estimated at £25m, recent developments suggest Chelsea are reconsidering their long-term interest. It is suggested that the west London club may opt to pay a £5m penalty to avoid making the transfer permanent, which would see Sancho return to United at the end of the season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Turkish outlet report that Fenerbahce are actively working on securing a deal for the 25-year-old winger. Club officials are said to have already begun preparations to bring Sancho to Istanbul, with Mourinho giving the green light to pursue the player. With the club expected to part ways with current loanee Allan Saint-Maximin, who is set to return to Saudi side Al-Ahli, Fenerbahce are prioritising the signing of a dynamic wide player.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Local rivals Galatasaray are also said to be tracking the winger’s situation. With reports suggesting that Galatasaray’s Baris Alper Yılmaz is being eyed by Premier League clubs, the Istanbul side is expected to dip into the market for a replacement. Sancho’s availability and potential discounted price, if Chelsea pull out, make him a viable option for both Turkish powerhouses.

Ravindra, Shipley bowl New Zealand to solitary win after Young and Latham fifties

Iftikhar kept Pakistan in the hunt with a valiant 94 not out but it wasn’t enough; hosts clinch series 4-1

In the end, it all proved one step too far for Pakistan. One indifferent performance with the bat, coupled with a spell of suffocating brilliance by Henry Shipley, saw Pakistan slump to a 47-run defeat in the final ODI of the five-match series, and the final game of their longest home season in a generation. Pakistan clinched the series 4-1.Half-centuries by Will Young and Tom Latham had given New Zealand 299 to defend, but an opening ten overs where Pakistan lost wickets and struggled for runs set them on a an irrecoverable course. Iftikhar Ahmed and Agha Salman provided some hope through the middle with a 97-run partnership, but there was little to follow as they were bowled out for 252. It means New Zealand avoid a series whitewash, while Pakistan fail to hold onto the number one ranking they achieved for the first time 48 hours ago.Pakistan created their own problems in a lacklustre start to the chase. Adam Milne and Matt Henry were parsimonious, while Fakhar Zaman and Shan Masood both struggled for rhythm. The first five overs saw 12 runs scored, and while Fakhar managed a couple of fours to break the shackles, Masood couldn’t seem to break free. His downfall came in the eighth over, chopping on to a ball that was much too close for the slash across the line he attempted after grinding to a 20-ball 7.But disaster struck when Latham handed Shipley the ball the following over. Babar Azam’s frightening consistency has received much acclaim, but in his 100th ODI, he lasted just five deliveries. A loose shot carved straight to backward point off Shipley’s first ball set off raucous New Zealand celebrations, and stunned Karachi into silence.Even Fakhar appeared to be reined in after that, and neither him nor Mohammed Rizwan ever looked totally convincing. Shipley trapped the wicketkeeper-batter in front soon after, and Fakhar’s struggles were only increasing. Rachin Ravindra finally put him out of his misery for a turgid 64-ball 33; he has never had a lower strike rate after facing 45 balls.Pakistan are often perceived to be vulnerable in the middle order, but they will draw comfort from the resistance those batters offered today. Iftikhar and Salman did their World Cup chances little harm with a glittering partnership, taking the attack to a New Zealand bowling line-up which had the top four on a leash. They wouldn’t get bogged down and didn’t prioritise wicket-preservation. There were a couple of dropped chances, but as Salman brought up a 46-ball 50, the visitors were well aware this game was alive and well.It was, perhaps predictably, Shipley who broke the partnership, inducing Salman into an uppish off drive that didn’t clear Latham at mid-off. Thereafter, it was Iftikhar vs the world, little support forthcoming from the other end. Shadab Khan and Usama Mir showed positive intent but didn’t have Iftikhar’s staying power, and Ravindra came back to mop up, removing Mir and Shaheen Afridi in one over. Iftikhar raged away at the other end, but the need to keep the strike would prove Pakistan’s downfall, with Haris run out at the non-striker’s end. It came with a distraught Iftikhar just six runs away from his first ODI hundred. Will Young scored a 91-ball 87•PCB

Young, Latham lead New Zealand to 299Earlier, Young and Latham set New Zealand up, but incisive, wicket-taking bowling from Pakistan then knocked that platform from right underneath their feet. Young’s flamboyant 91-ball 87 had put his side in the ascendancy through the first half, and Mark Chapman’s quickfire 33-ball 43 turbocharged the innings. But Shadab and Mir each struck twice at key moments to kneecap New Zealand, and as the fast bowlers joined the party at the death, the 299 the visitors ended up with was more a stumble than a sprint.Latham called correctly for the third time running but chose to bat first this time, only for Pakistan to shackle the batters in the first powerplay. A rash, loose shot from Tom Blundell – a whip off the pads off Rauf’s bowling – saw him hole out cheaply. Henry Nicholls plodded along with Young for a steady 51-run stand, but that’s all it really was, never really threatening to recover momentum. It was only when Mir dismissed him that New Zealand’s brightest passage of play began. The next 19 overs saw 130 runs scored. At first, it was the Latham-Young stand that shone. Young reached his third ODI half-century, he grew in confidence and the shotmaking became more destructive. Shadab was dispatched for a four and a six over the onside, before Young really went after him in his fourth over. It included a six over cover – the shot of the innings – and then another boundary through the offside, and with Latham looking comfortable at the other end, New Zealand were rollicking along.Young’s fall came to a lovely ball spinning away and kissing his outside edge off Shadab, but it did little to stem the runscoring. Chapman was the chief aggressor, savaging Agha Salman in an over that saw him plunder 22, and when he had raced along to 43 off 33 and New Zealand were set up at 206 for 3 with 14 overs to go, a huge score seemed on the cards. But an unlucky dismissal, a missed sweep that saw the ball tickle his gloves on the follow-through – combined with a sensational catch by Rizwan, who was brilliant all innings – was the fulcrum of the turning point. The last 14 overs would see just 83 runs scored as New Zealand lost all seven remaining wickets, bowled out in the 50th over. Latham and Cole McConchie looked like they might take up the baton, but none could truly continue the onslaught. Mir struck to remove Latham and Afridi dismissed McConchie for little more than a cameo.New Zealand’s lack of batting firepower in the lower order was suddenly exposed, and it was left to Ravindra to provide the bulk of the runs. He would do so valiantly as wickets continued to tumble at the other end before he, too, fell to Rauf for a 20-ball 28. That left New Zealand nine down, with the final wicket coming with three balls still to go, as a direct hit found Ish Sodhi well short of his ground.New Zealand were aware they’d need something special from their bowlers to walk away with something to show for this ODI series. Their best showing all tour demonstrated a depleted New Zealand had fought right to the end.

Uphill challenge for hosts as world champions England look to conquer Bangladesh

Big picture: A ‘proper contest’ awaits

Long gone is the “little brother vs big brother” equation in Bangladesh-England matches. The 2015 World Cup game brought a bit of edge into the contests, and then came the pushing and shoving between players in the end-of-game beeline during the last bilateral series back in 2016. Since then, this fixture has become a ‘proper contest’ although the two sides are playing a bilateral series after a seven-year gap. This is now a battle between the world champions and the team that aspires to be new world champions. Bangladesh have won seven home ODI series in a row after beating India in December. Mehidy Hasan Miraz single-handedly won them two games but it is the nature of the Bangladesh team these days that they have matchwinners all through the XI.Related

Tamim Iqbal, who missed the India series through a groin injury, returns to a strong line-up that includes Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. But these days, Litton Das, Mehidy and Taskin Ahmed are dangerous opponents too.England will have their hands full, but there’s also a lot of respect for this side in Bangladesh. The English players are BPL regulars, and even played plenty of Dhaka Premier League in the past decade. Just like everywhere else in the world, England now have better understanding of conditions, attitudes and cultures, and Bangladesh expects nothing different this time. They will be without Harry Brook and Ben Duckett – who are in New Zealand with the Test side – but they have Will Jacks, James Vince and Mark Wood among their recalls into the ODI side. Rehan Ahmed is another intriguing inclusion, given how the Dhaka pitches tend to assist spinners. It promises to be a great contest between the England and the side, like many others around the world, that wants to be the next England.

In the spotlight: Tamim-Shakib and Moeen

Much of the focus will be on how Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan carry themselves in the wake of the BCB president’s revelations that they don’t see eye-to-eye. Tamim has stressed that their on-field relationship is sound, and that’s all that matters. They have been the most successful cricketers for Bangladesh, and both are current captains. But would the opposition let them forget this topic when they are batting together in the middle? There will be a lot riding on how Moeen Ali comes into the game in the middle-order and middle overs. Moeen’s role as vice-captain was essential to England’s T20 World Cup success in Australia and he has the skills to make a difference in the subcontinent, ahead of the ODI World Cup in India in October-November. Moeen’s local knowledge – he was with the Comilla Victorians that lifted their fourth BPL title two weeks ago – will come handy, especially to know when the press the accelerator.

Team news: Taijul, Rehan in focus

Tamim will slot into Anamul Haque’s place. Taijul Islam could play in Ebadot Hossain’s slot as the third specialist spinner.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal (capt), 2 Litton Das, 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Afif Hossain, 7 Towhid Hridoy, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Taijul Islam, 11 Mustafizur Rahman.England are expected to lean towards picking an extra spin-bowling allrounder in Will Jacks, rather than an extra seamer. They are likely to rotate the quicks over the course of the tour. Rehan Ahmed is likely to get a game at some stage in the series, but missed two days of training this week due to illness.England (possible): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Phil Salt, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 James Vince, 5 Jos Buttler (capt/wk), 6 Will Jacks, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Sam Curran, 9 Chris Woakes/Mark Wood, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Jofra Archer/Saqib Mahmood. Will Jacks made the trip to Bangladesh during England’s defeat in Wellington•Gareth Copley/Getty Images

Pitch and conditions

The Shere Bangla National Stadium pitch is expected to assist spinners as usual, but the BPL’s knockout phase, couple of weeks ago, saw plenty of runs scored here. The 12pm start time is to avoid heavy dew after sunset.

Stats and trivia

  • Shakib is six wickets away from becoming the first Bangladesh bowler to take 300 ODI wickets.
  • Shakib has another milestone on his radar. He and Mushfiqur are 165 and 189 runs away, respectively, from reaching 7,000 ODI runs.
  • Moeen needs four wickets to complete 100 ODI wickets.
  • The series will be broadcast live by Sky Sports and on the ECB website after a last-minute deal with the BCB.

“We have lost 8 in the last 10 but we are also the champions of the world and have done well before that. And actually, we haven’t really had our best team for a lot of the time recently.”

Russell and Rinku star as KKR seal last-ball thriller

Kolkata Knight Riders hung on by the skin of their teeth, both in their match against Punjab Kings and in the tournament. Rinku Singh sealed another last-ball win for them, but this was no miraculous comeback from the dead. This was a topsy-turvy contest set up by KKR’s spinners, but even their batters struggled on a slow surface.

Rana fined INR 12 lakh

The KKR captain was handed an INR 12 lakh fine after his side were deemed to be maintaining a slow over-rate during their fixture against Kings at the Eden Gardens. This was KKR’s first offence of the season under IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences.

Nitish Rana set up the chase with 51 off 38, but it took Andre Russell to finally turn up and take 20 runs off the 19th over, bowled by Sam Curran, to bring the equation down to six required off the last over. Arshdeep Singh managed to push them all the way to the last ball, before Rinku Singh found the boundary with two runs required. The result left KKR and PBKS level at 10 points from 11 matches. Five teams are currently tied on that points total in the middle of the table, but both Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians – who meet on Tuesday – have a game in hand.Rinku Singh leaps in joy after hitting the winning boundary•BCCI

Harshit Rana keeps a check

PBKS were always going to target the new ball because they expected the spinners to be effective on this pitch, which is why they batted first. Prabhsimran Singh was up early, using Vaibhav Arora’s inswing to pick up three boundaries in the first over. The impressive Harshit Rana, though, bowled hard lengths and got disconcerting bounce from the pitch. He had both Prabhsimran and Bhanuka Rajapaksa caught at the wicket while looking to hit big shots. Rajapksa’s return to the side ended with a three-ball duck. Liam Livingstone still kept going hard, helping PBKS take 19 off the fifth over, bowled by Russell, to make it 51 for 2.

The spin choke

KKR are not shy to use spin during the powerplay or at the death. They had picked three spinners. So they began the spin attack in earnest. Varun Chakravarthy got the first shot, and produced a beautiful legbreak to trap the rampaging Livingstone in front.Having lost a third wicket inside the powerplay, PBKS had to go into rebuild mode especially with the KKR spinners bowling well. Jitesh Sharma then hit Suyash Sharma for a six, and Shikhar Dhawan had just about begun to open up again with sweeps and reverse-sweeps when Varun came back for the 13th over.Once again, Varun produced the breakthrough, spinning the ball away from Jitesh, taking the edge through to the keeper. Nitish brought himself on when two left-hand batters were at the wicket, and got Dhawan for 57 off 47. Suyash proceeded to tighten the screws with the wicket of Sam Curran. In effect, PBKS were tied down on a slow pitch by 13 straight overs of spin, which brought them just 92 runs for five wickets.Varun Chakravarthy picked up three wickets including those of Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma•AFP via Getty Images

Pace on, game on

As soon as KKR went back to pace for the last two overs, PBKS came back to life and took 36 runs to make it a total of 87 from just seven overs of pace. Shahrukh Khan scored 21 off 8, and Harpreet Brar 17 off 9.

Nathan Ellis gives PBKS early lead

A similar pattern of batters going after pace followed but Nathan Ellis, deservingly playing ahead of Kagiso Rabada, flummoxed Rahmanullah Gurbaz with his slower one. At 39 for 1 after five overs, with Venkatesh Iyer not allowed to bat at No. 3 at that moment because he had spent time off the field during the PBKS innings, KKR needed something special.

Rana attacks Livingstone

PBKS went to take pace off the ball, but Jason Roy and Nitish managed to hit Livingstone for a total of five boundaries in his two overs. It softened the blow of KKR losing Roy to Brar with the ball arriving too late for his slog-sweep. The equation had got tricky – 104 from 10 overs on a tricky surface – when Nitish took down Livingstone’s second over, bringing KKR’s task down to 88 from 54 balls.Arshdeep Singh sinks to the ground after conceding a four off the final ball•BCCI

Chahar keeps PBKS in it

He might not be having the greatest season, but Rahul Chahar turned up for PBKS with the wickets of Iyer and Rana, earned through the slowing down of pace, which he himself carried out. At the fall of Rana’s wicket, KKR needed 56 off 28, and it was down to Russell and Rinku.

The finishing touches

Chahar bowled out in the 16th over, leaving KKR 51 to get off 24, but PBKS had a question to answer: bowl four overs of pace or go to Brar’s left-arm spin. They took the safe route. Ellis bowled out in the 17th, but went for 15 as Russell hit a four and Rinku a six. Ellis’ figures of 4-0-29-1 almost made up for the absence of the extra spinner, but KKR were still ahead in the game. With 26 required off two, though, Curran made a couple of errors in execution, and Russell climbed in with two sixes over the bigger boundary. For good measure he skimmed one over the short side too.Arshdeep bowled a superb last over, denying Russell the big hit, and then running him out as he scrambled for a bye to tie the game off the fifth ball. Off the last ball, Arshdeep finally erred, and Rinku flicked the full-toss square of fine leg to get twice the requirement.

Boland injury scare takes gloss off Victoria's excellent day

South Australia opener Jake Carder took 120 balls to reach double figures as the visitors crawled through the first session

AAP and ESPNcricinfo staff03-Feb-2024Fringe Test quick Scott Boland will undergo scans on his knee after pulling up sore while bowling for Victoria in the Sheffield ShieldThe 34-year-old left the field after being unable to complete his 17th over on day one of Victoria’s clash with South Australia at the Junction Oval.”He’s got pain in his anterior knee/knee tendon,” a Cricket Victoria spokesperson said. “Precautionary MRI but we’re confident that he’ll bowl in the second innings.”Spinner Todd Murphy, who played six Tests in 2023, stepped up to bowl the final ball of the over after Boland had sent down five deliveries before going off.Boland has not played for Australia since the third Test of last year’s Ashes, but has remained around the squad during the summer. An injury would put Boland in doubt for Australia’s tour of New Zealand, with the first of two Tests starting in Wellington on February 29.Mitch Perry produced a brilliant piece of fielding run out Liam Scott•Getty Images

They more than made the most of captain Peter Handscomb’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss.Traditionally one of the best batting wickets in the country, the Junction Oval offered plenty for the bowlers as the Redbacks were skittled for 173.SA’s top-order endured a torrid start, crawling to 9 for 3 after 19 overs. The run-rate increased slightly after lunch as Ben Manenti, Harry Nielsen and captain Jake Lehmann helped the visitors post a total that looked well beyond them early in the day.Mitchell Perry was the pick of Victoria’s bowlers with 3 for 43, while Xavier Crone finished with 3 for 46. Perry also produced a brilliant piece of work in the field to run out Liam Scott. In reply, Victoria raced to 71 for 0 stumps with Nic Maddinson and Marcus Harris at the crease.

Babar Azam and Saim Ayub gave Peshawar Zalmi a rapid start•PSL

Iftikhar Ahmed’s blistering 60 off 27 balls went in vain as Peshawar Zalmi snatched a four-run victory over table-toppers Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League on Tuesday.Zalmi are the only franchise in Pakistan’s premier domestic T20 tournament that has beaten Sultans twice this season.Sultans have already qualified for the playoffs with six wins from eight games and Zalmi moved closer to a place in the final four with nine points and two games in hand.Sultans required 58 off the last three overs when Iftikhar and Chris Jordan (who finished with 30* off 12) counterattacked against seamers Aamer Jamal, Naveen-ul-Haq and Salman Irshad before falling short at 200-5.Earlier, captain Babar Azam continued his sublime form after winning the toss and smashed 64 off 40 balls. Left-handed batter Saim Ayub made 46 off 22 balls in Zalmi’s strong total of 204-5 as both batters put on the season’s highest total of 71 runs in the powerplay.Babar and Ayub smacked Sultans’ pace and spin as they raised a rapid 84-run stand at 12-an-over.Ayub was ruthless against pace with his trademark big shots on the on side as he hit five sixes and three fours before he was trapped leg before wicket by tournament’s top wicket-taker Usama Mir (3-32) in his first over.Mir leads the bowling chart with 18 wickets, but his team-mate Mohammad Ali, who has 14 wickets, had a forgetful day against Ayub and Babar as he returned with expensive figures of 0-46 off his three overs.Mir pulled back Zalmi with his sharp legbreaks as he dismissed Tom Kohler-Cadmore (5) and then got the key wicket of Babar in his last over by having him clean bowled before Rovman Powell (23) and Jamal (12) played little cameos in the last five overs.Sultans’ top-order struggled against rookie left-arm spinner Mehran Mumtaz, who bowled with lot of confidence in the powerplay and had Reeza Hendricks (5) caught off his own bowling in his debut PSL over.Captain Mohammad Rizwan (32) couldn’t beat Jamal’s throw off his follow through while Asif Ali timed his jump to perfection on the edge of the boundary and plucked a brilliant catch to dismiss Dawid Malan (19) in the 12th over. But Iftikhar and Jordan nearly pulled off a victory for Sultans with their blazing 75-run stand off just 28 balls but Zalmi’s pacers just about managed to hang on in the last three overs.

We don’t just rely on one or two players game-in and game-out.”Everyone has made great contributions throughout the BBL and when you get in pressure moments that’s a really important thing to have in your team. It’s a great trait and one of the reasons why the Sixers have been so successful the last few years.”Sixers have played in six BBL finals and won three in their history. The current side is a real band of brothers who have stuck together through what has been a mostly wonderful time for the franchise.”I look at the team now and there are probably six or seven who have played 100 games with the Sixers,” Dwarshuis said. “We have this core group who like to stick together and play great cricket together. We know each other’s roles and are comfortable with each other.”I’ve won two finals and lost two. I love it here at the Sixers. Hopefully, we can make it three wins. Our win in Perth [to secure second spot] and this win here shows we are peaking at the right time in the tournament. There are some positive signs leading into Sydney.”The home ground advantage is a saying for a reason. We have played four of our games there this year and know what to expect.”
