Ange Postecoglou to replace Erik ten Hag or Jose Mourinho?! Ex-Spurs boss in demand as managerless Bayer Leverkusen and Fenerbahce eye Europa League winner

Per Fabrizio Romano, both Leverkusen and Fenerbahce are considering appointing Postecoglou after dispensing with their managers. The former sacked Erik ten Hag after two Bundesliga games; Mourinho was removed from his role by the Turkish club after they failed to qualify for the Champions League proper.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Now, Romano reports that the Bundesliga and Super Lig sides are each considering an approach to the former Spurs boss, who won the Europa League last season. He was, however, sacked after guiding the club to a 17th-placed finish in the Premier League. His European exploits have undoubtedly earned him a great deal of credit for potential suitors, however.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Postecoglou had been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia throughout the summer but he did not end up heading to the Middle East. He remains on the market for any clubs looking to change manager but it is unclear whether he would prefer a move to Germany or Turkiye, or if he would rather wait for another role in the Premier League.

Man Utd player ratings vs Burnley: Bruno Fernandes doesn't miss twice – captain's penalty snatches chaotic victory to save Ruben Amorim and blundering Altay Bayindir

The Red Devils were much improved but needed a last-gasp spot-kick from their usual talisman to take the points after more goalkeeping woes

Lightning rarely strikes twice and Bruno Fernandes doesn't miss from the penalty spot two weeks in a row. So when the Manchester United captain took the ball in front of the Scoreboard End six days after ballooning a kick over the bar against Fulham, you knew he was going to score.

This time Fernandes buried the ball in the bottom corner and gave United an angst-ridden 3-2 win over Burnley, giving them their first victory of the season. They were actually more than deserving of the three points but they had to sweat to get them. An own goal from Josh Cullen put United in front after sustained pressure but Lyle Foster equalised in the second half, after the hosts had lost Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount to injuries.

Burnley's joy lasted no time at all as Bryan Mbeumo restored United's lead after a driving run from Diogo Dalot. But the Red Devils never make it easy for themselves and yet another mishap from Altay Bayindir gave the visitors a second equaliser, Jaidon Anthony pouncing after the goalkeeper had failed to catch or punch away a strike.

United threw everything at Burnley, including a wasteful Benjamin Sesko who missed two headers. But they got what they wanted when a VAR review gave them an added-time penalty, having been denied one in the first half. Fernandes made no mistake but more mistakes are almost guaranteed unless they sign a new goalkeeper.

GOAL rates Man United's players from Old Trafford…

Getty Images SportGoalkeeper & Defence

Altay Bayindir (4/10):

Only put under pressure twice and both occasions resulted in goals. The second was particularly sloppy as he spilled a tame shot from Loum Tchaouna to the feet of Anthony. Before then he had looked surprisingly comfortable with his feet, and played his part in Mbeumo's goal with a long kick downfield. A shame that he could not do the basics with his hands.

Leny Yoro (6/10):

Had a good early header saved. Dealt with most of the problems Burnley posed him but was caught unawares for the first equaliser.

Matthijs de Ligt (5/10):

Didn't get back in position which led to Foster being unmarked for the first goal. Was part of the collective malaise for the second goal. And it was a real shame as he had previously done a fine job limiting Burnley to so few openings.

Luke Shaw (6/10):

Good in open play but failed to clear the danger from Walker's throw-in leading to the second goal.

AdvertisementAFPMidfield

Amad Diallo (7/10):

A big improvement on his display at Grimsby, causing lots of danger. Unlucky to not score from his volley but really should have netted earlier when Mbeumo put him on a plate. Made amends by winning the penalty.

Casemiro (6/10):

His presence helped United dominate large parts of the game and his header off the crossbar sparked the opener. However, his drop in intensity helped Burnley find their way back into it.

Bruno Fernandes (7/10):

Pulled United's strings throughout and rescued them at the death, scoring a last-minute penalty to relieve the pressure on his goalkeeper and his manager. A captain's performance.

Diogo Dalot (6/10):

A mixed bag. Imprecise at times, to the frustration of the home crowd, but then made Mbeumo's goal by bulldozing forward. Made a similar move later in the game but bungled the pass.

Getty Images SportAttack

Bryan Mbeumo (8/10):

Brilliant from start to finish. Came mighty close to scoring twice before eventually doing so. His bright movement gave his team a constant outlet and always kept Burnley on their toes.

Matheus Cunha (6/10):

Made a positive start before being forced off injured midway through the first half. Glanced a header just wide and created lots of danger through the middle.

Mason Mount (8/10):

A thrilling display which justified him starting a third league game in a row but as luck would have it he had to come off at half-time. Pestered Walker, played a fine ball to Mbeumo nearly resulting in goal then headed off the bar.

Joshua Zirkzee (6/10):

His movement and passing freed up his team-mates even if he was a clear downgrade on Mbeumo. Played a fine pass to Mbeumo when Amad missed his sitter while his knockdown helped the Cameroonian eventually score. His own finishing, though, left a lot to be desired.

 Kobbie Mainoo (5/10):

Not the performance to convince Amorim to give him a regular starting berth. Shanked a shot over the bar and did not create enough with his passing.

Benjamin Sesko (5/10):

The fact he did not start again must concern him but he did not prove his manager wrong, missing the target with two headers.

Noussair Mazraoui (N/A):

A late replacement for Yoro.

Ruben Amorim (6/10):

The performance he wanted to see but suffered too many anxious moments, underlining the need for more team discipline and above all for a new goalkeeper.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea have confirmed Garnacho will wear the No.49 shirt for the Blues following his long-awaited arrival from United. Interestingly, the number is the same one he wore during his first two seasons in the first team at Old Trafford, something the Blues were strangely keen to point out.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

There is no doubt that Garnacho views his breakthrough years as the most memorable of his career so far. Nevertheless, it is a questionable decision to show sentiment towards his past at United so soon after a public falling-out with the club and its head coach Ruben Amorim. Garnacho will hope to invoke the spirit of 2022-23, when he looked to have the world at his feet aged 18, as he settles into life at Stamford Bridge.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Garnacho made 144 appearances for United before his relationship with the club turned sour, scoring 26 goals. Surprisingly, the 2024-25 season was his most productive in front of goal despite the Argentina international falling out of favour under Amorim, as he struck 11 goals in 58 appearances in all competitions.

    WHAT NEXT FOR GARNACHO?

Garnacho will know as well as anyone that this is a big year for his career. Not only does he have a new club, manager and set of fans to impress, but it is a World Cup year and the new Blues star will dream of representing Argentina on the world stage for the first time in the USA, Canada and Mexico. He will hope to achieve a lot in his new No.49 shirt at Stamford Bridge, playing for a side he proclaims to be the "world's best".

Will Starc play in Delhi? Boland happy to make it tough for the selectors

Scott Boland hopes he has put enough pressure on Australia’s selectors to keep his place for the second Test against India in Delhi despite Mitchell Starc’s imminent return from a finger injury.Starc missed the opening Test in Nagpur because of the finger injury he suffered in late December. He remained at home for the start of the tour but has flown into Delhi and will train today on his own. Australia’s physical performance coach Aaron Kellett has flown to Delhi to oversee Starc’s training while the rest of the team remained in Nagpur to train before travelling to Delhi on Tuesday.Boland wasn’t originally set to play in Nagpur, but Josh Hazlewood’s Achilles issue opened the door for him and he bowled 17 overs for just 34 runs in India’s innings of 400. He bowled one of the best fast-bowling spells of the match on the second morning, delivering three maidens in six overs and conceding just three runs while bowling to the in-form Rohit Sharma. It came after Australia had conceded 40 runs in the first 13 overs of the morning. His ability to slow the scoreboard down helped Todd Murphy pick up two wickets at the other end.Related

  • India's cheat code: lower-order muscle

While Starc looks like a lock to return, having played every Test on the tours of Pakistan and Sri Lanka last year as the second quick alongside Pat Cummins when Australia played two spinners, Boland was hopeful of slotting in.”I felt like I bowled well, but when you are bringing in someone like Mitchell Starc, who is a gun in these conditions and has bowled really well in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, hopefully I made the selectors job a little bit tougher than what it originally was,” Boland said. “In places like here, it is tough to judge [how you went] as a fast bowler but I think I contributed to our game plan and I played my role pretty well.”I think I had a pretty good spell in conjunction with Toddy a couple of times so I was happy with how the ball came out.”

Will Mitchell Starc be ready for Delhi Test?

“Obviously I want to play. I enjoyed the challenge of bowling in these different conditions. I’ve just got to make the selectors’ job as hard as I can to bring someone in,” Boland said. “We don’t know. I’m not sure. I haven’t seen Starcy bowl. I’m not sure if he’s going to be right to play. I assume he is if he’s over here. I don’t think we’re going to play three fast bowlers. There’s only going to be two spots up for grabs, I reckon.”4:36

Were Australia a tad too defensive with the ball?

India were 168 for 5 at one stage in their innings in Nagpur, but Boland bowled just eight overs after that point. He found the outside edge of both Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel early in their innings but neither ball went to hand.Coach Andrew McDonald did not think Boland was underbowled in the innings despite appearing to be Australia’s second-best bowler behind Murphy. “I think it was about right,” McDonald said. “I think we wanted to come in with the quicks and use reverse swing. We probably didn’t get as much reverse as we thought and nor did they. There wasn’t as much reverse on offer but definitely Scott did the role we expected him to do.”He allowed the spinners to be well-placed, and we knew that we were going to have combinations where Scotty would bowl with the spinner down the other end and there was going to be other periods where the spinners would bowl together. The question for us, was it too similar with two [off] spinners operating in tandem spinning the ball in?”Starc’s reverse swing threat would be a major temptation for the selectors in Delhi as would his ability to create rough outside the right-hander’s off stump when bowling over the wicket, which will significantly aid Murphy and Nathan Lyon, although it would also help R Ashwin.Boland got a hint of reverse in Nagpur but conceded the ball did not stay hard for long enough for it to be effective. “I felt like we had a little bit of reverse swing but the ball was so soft and the wicket was so slow through the middle, it was hard to beat the inside edge with the bat,” he said. “Maybe if we can get reverse swing a little bit earlier we might be able to beat the inside edge, but with the wicket being so slow it was hard work.”He also noted how difficult it was for Australia’s slip fielders. Alex Carey stood up to the stumps to Boland for periods, while the edges off Jadeja and Axar did not carry to a regulation slip. Steven Smith was standing unusually close at first slip for the Jadeja edge but could not grasp the near-impossible chance.”I felt running in that they looked real close,” Boland said. “I think I bowled a couple of overs from the other end with the second new ball and I asked Pete [Handscomb] to come as close as he could and I was running in and I was like ‘he’s too close’, even if they nick it he’s not going to catch it. He was happy to do that and I just said stand where you’re comfortable. If you do get an edge you want him to have a chance to catch it.”

On-the-move Warriorz have the firepower to stop the Mumbai Indians winning spree

A win for UP Warriorz will take them level with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals at the top of the points table

Sthalekar: ‘Milestones are not important for Healy’

Mumbai Indians vs UP WarriorzMumbai Indians are in cruise control with three wins in three games, each one of them superbly dominant. This game, therefore, could be the perfect opportunity to bring some of their other overseas players, like Chloe Tryon, into the mix, to give them game time when the sailing is smooth. They might also be better off playing a specialist bowler in place of Amanjot Kaur, who hasn’t been needed with either bat or ball so far.But next in their way are UP Warriorz. Warriorz have empowered their young Indian talents: Kiran Navgire, Shweta Sehrawat, Devika Vaidya, Simran Shaikh to name a few. In Alyssa Healy, they have a captain who has already delivered outstanding returns on investment with her strong leadership style and bruising batting up front. They have undone some of their net run-rate issues by beating Royals Challengers Bangalore with seven overs in hand, and a win over Mumbai will bring them level on points with Mumbai and Delhi Capitals, which will make the fight for the playoffs all the more engaging.Players to watchSaika Ishaque is 27 but has toiled in domestic cricket without much reward or recognition for years. But here, she’s hardly shown nerves and has displayed confidence in her abilities, which has helped her surge to the top of the wicket-takers’ chart with her left-arm spin. Batters have failed to pick her lengths, the clever deceptions in the air, and fizz off the pitch. She has shown the ability to also bowl across phases in a T20 innings. It makes you wonder if she might leapfrog the incumbents in the national team.Devika Vaidya’s batting wasn’t utilised to full potential until the previous game, when Warriorz found out that she could be the perfect foil to the destructive Healy. Vaidya can lend the calmness they lacked in the first two games, when their youngsters struggled to adjust to the pace and bounce of the DY Patil surface. Vaidya has had a second wind of sorts in her career, having made a comeback after three years, and would want to make a big impact.6:22

Neser injury and Tasmania's batters put pressure on Queensland's final bid

Caleb Jewell and Beau Webster put Tasmania in a strong position

AAP14-Mar-2023Queensland’s decision to send Tasmania in to bat at Bellerive Oval failed to pay dividends thanks to half-centuries from Caleb Jewell and Beau Webster. The in-form Jewell seemed set for a third century is as many outings for Tasmania, only to fall for 98 after a 228-ball innings.Webster ended the day unbeaten on 91, having struck 11 boundaries in a 157-ball knock. He was joined at the crease by Tim Paine, on 41 not out.Queensland, who are in a tense battle with Victoria for a spot in next week’s Shield final, commenced the day disastrously with the loss of strike bowler Michael Neser. The Test paceman was ruled out minutes before the start after suffering an ankle injury during the warm-up, with Liam Guthrie coming into the side in his place. To compounded Queensland’s woes, Mark Steketee could only manage 10 overs before limping off with a hip problem.Jewell, having hit three figures in his last Shield and One-Day Cup outings, fell to the new ball after edging a Guthrie delivery to Joe Burns at first slip. The 25-year-old left-hander had shared in two century partnerships, putting on 104 with Jake Doran (58) for the second wicket, and then 120 with Webster for the fifth.Left-armer Guthrie made the most of his eleventh-hour inclusion and made a double breakthrough after lunch, with two wickets in three balls knocking over Mac Wright and captain Jordan Silk for a duck.Steketee, the Shield’s second-highest wicket-taker after Neser, struck in just the third over removing Tim Ward for 2, but had little further joy despite the green-tinged wicket.Second-placed Queensland must at least equal Victoria’s result against Western Australia in Perth if they are to secure a spot in the season decider.
