Sutherland, Litchfield seal series for Australia in tight finish

Richa Ghosh starred with a 96 but India paid for poor catching and slowing down with the bat as they went on to lose by three runs

Himanshu Agrawal30-Dec-2023A total of 11 catches were dropped in Mumbai. First, India put down seven and as if to return the favour a bit, Australia spilled four. But Phoebe Litchfield took a stunner for the visitors when it mattered most, ending a crucial 88-run stand for India when they needed another 100 with 17 overs and eight wickets remaining. That went a long way in Australia scraping through by three runs in the second ODI, and with that, winning the series. The batter to be dismissed was Jemimah Rodrigues for 44, as Litchfield dived full stretch across to her right at short extra cover. Richa Ghosh, with whom Rodrigues had that stand, later made up for lost time to hit 96 from 117 balls after being 54 off 84 at one stage. But with the game still in the balance, and India requiring 41 more from 38 deliveries with six wickets in hand, even Ghosh’s catch was well intercepted by Litchfield while moving to her left in a packed off-side ring. That pretty much decided the outcome, as India paid for poor catching and slowing down with the bat. Although Ghosh sped up despite cramping, Georgia Wareham, who had dismissed Rodrigues, struck soon after to have Harmanpreet Kaur tickle behind to Alyssa Healy for 5. Ghosh tried to counterattack in a 47-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Deepti Sharma, but Australia kept striking at regular intervals, thus putting Deepti’s second ODI five-for in vain.Related

Ball-by-ball: The seven catches that India dropped

Harleen Deol named concussion replacement for Sneh Rana

India had a chance until as late as 47 overs into their chase, after which they were only 22 away. But Annabel Sutherland, who had already got Ghosh, held her nerve to concede just three singles and also remove Pooja Vastrakar, who was coming off a 47-ball 62 from 47 in the first ODI. India never got back on track after that, eventually leaving them wondering what would have been had all those catches gone to hand. For a few tense moments, that thought must have crossed Australia’s minds too, who had given Ghosh a life each on 0 and 36. The first one came from Litchfield herself, putting one down at first slip in the eighth over. Next, it was Sutherland who dropped one in the 27th. That allowed Ghosh to keep ticking steadily, as she avoided risks in a patient start to her innings where she hit just two boundaries from her first 52 deliveries.Even Rodrigues didn’t entirely seem busy at the other end, as the required run rate kept ticking over. But with the game well under India’s control, Litchfield struck like lightning and halted India’s calmly moving train. That, after she had hit 63 with the bat. Litchfield was the beneficiary on three of India’s seven drops, getting a life on 0, 9 and 15. Although she consumed 98 deliveries, it was a challenging pitch to bat on at the Wankhede Stadium, where the ball turned and gripped aplenty for Deepti.Richa Ghosh fell four short of her maiden ODI ton•BCCIIndia’s spinners applied the brakes in the middle overs, as Australia stumbled from 117 for 1 in the 24th over to 180 for 6 in the 40th. The slowdown happened once India bowled spin from both ends, although Deepti’s 5 for 38 stood in contrast to debutant Shreyanka Patil and Sneh Rana, who combined figures of 2 for 102 from their 20 overs. But while the spinners kept Australia quiet, Ellyse Perry kept the pace up. She had flicked and flashed her way to 28 from her first 23 balls. Perry eventually fell for 50 from 47, with Deepti ending her animated stay at the crease in the 24th over. That wicket started Australia’s slide, as Deepti then trapped Beth Mooney, who missed an attempted sweep off a quicker delivery.Patil too got into the wickets in the 34th over, when Litchfield got the toe end of the bat behind to Richa in an attempt to sweep. Rana also struck to get Ashleigh Gardner for 2, after which came Deepti’s best of the lot. She tossed one up enticingly at Tahlia McGrath in the 40th over. The ball dipped and landed just outside the off stump, turning in enough to smash into the stumps with McGrath unsure of whether to come forward or go back.At 180 for 6, Wareham and Sutherland briefly steadied Australia with a 36-run partnership, before Wareham chipped one off Deepti to Smriti Mandhana – who had dropped two catches earlier – at midwicket to start the 46th over.Four balls later, Deepti completed her five-for with a return catch of Sutherland. Australia were 219 for 8 with another 25 balls remaining, and Alana King made full use of that. She swung three sixes – and with that, the momentum – in an unbeaten 28 from 17 balls which helped Australia to 258. Thus, King’s knock, Litchfield and Perry’s fifties, and a lot of help from India took Australia to victory, with India yet to beat them in a bilateral ODI series.

Race for Sheffield Shield final set for grandstand finish after Victoria collapse

Cameron Gannon’s five-wicket haul helped secure a 100-run lead but the home side hit back

Victoria’s attack hit back against Western Australia late on a dramatic day two as the fight for a spot in the Sheffield Shield final intensified. In what has been a see-saw contest with so much at stake, 15 wickets fell in the day’s play in tough batting conditions at Junction Oval. After dismissing Victoria for 144 to gain a 100-run lead, WA’s top-order fell apart to slump to 31 for 4 before Cameron Bancroft and Josh Inglis provided a steadying 75-run partnership.Related

Boland makes his return count to lift Victoria in finals race

Inglis fell for 45 near the close, but Bancroft held firm with a gutsy unbeaten 42 off 151 balls to stretch WA’s lead to 219 runs. With top-placed Tasmania in a major battle against South Australia in the concurrent fixture, WA could leapfrog them with victory and clinch a home final starting on March 21.Tasmania have already secured a place in the five-day decider and they will play either Victoria or WA, who only need a draw to get through.Victoria fought back well after their batting order wilted to be bowled out in 43 overs as their bid for a third straight final’s appearance nosedived.Having overlooked spinning allrounder Ashton Agar, who has been unable to squeeze into the Shield line-up this season, WA were vindicated with their quartet of seamers menacing on a green-tinged surface marked by widening divots. After searing heat on day one, conditions cooled considerably as per Melbourne’s notoriously fickle weather. Cameron Gannon and Joel Paris relished the overcast skies as Victoria lost three wickets in the opening 30 minutes to slump to 21 for 4 in reply to WA’s first innings of 244.WA were ignited by a spectacular one-handed catch from wicketkeeper Inglis, who dove low to his left to remove Marcus Harris for 17. Paris then took over with the wickets of Campbell Kellaway and Peter Handscomb in successive overs. An onlooker to the flurry of wickets, Mitchell Perry dug in to continue his knack of producing indefatigable knocks as a nightwatcher against WA. He combined in a steadying 90-run partnership with Matthew Short, who scored runs quickly in a counterattack.Short raced to his half-century, but gifted his wicket after holing out to left-arm quick Liam Haskett on what was the last ball before lunch. It triggered a collapse after the interval with Victoria losing 5 for 33 as a number of their batters provided catching practice to WA’s outfielders.Skipper Will Sutherland tried to play aggressively, but fell into an awkward position to miss-hit a short-pitched Haskett delivery to fine-leg. Perry’s 95-ball rearguard ended tamely when he hit Haskett straight to square leg as Victoria’s lower-order offered little resistance.Without injured frontline quicks Jhye Richardson, Lance Morris and Matt Kelly, WA’s deep pace stocks have been underlined by the strong performances of Gannon and Haskett, who combined for eight wickets.Victoria desperately needed early wickets and Fergus O’Neill stood up with a terrific new-ball spell to dismiss opener Sam Whiteman before claiming the wickets of Jayden Goodwin and Hilton Cartwright on successive deliveries.WA’s collapse continued when Perry had Aaron Hardie caught at second slip with a cracking delivery that bounced sharply and shaped away. But Inglis came out firing after tea with his best shot being a belligerent pull shot to whack a short delivery from Scott Boland for six.WA appeared to have regained a stranglehold until offspinner Todd Murphy provided a late twist by having Inglis edging to Short at slip. He then had Charlie Stobo stumped in his next over as this crucial contest is fittingly headed for a grandstand finish.

'Hell of a team' – Andoni Iraola admits Bournemouth are 'very far' from Man Utd's level after friendly thrashing as Ruben Amorim makes 'intensity' claim

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has hailed Manchester United as a "hell of a team" after his side were thrashed 4-1 in a pre-season friendly. The Red Devils' sharpness and "intensity" impressed not just Iraola, but also Ruben Amorim, who noted his team’s progress as they gear up for the new campaign on the back of their horror 2024-25 season.

Manchester United cruised to a 4-1 win over Bournemouth in Chicago as part of their United States tour. Goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Patrick Dorgu, Amad Diallo, and Ethan Williams sealed the dominant victory for the Red Devils at Soldier Field. Bournemouth struggled to match United's pace and quality throughout the game, and Cherries boss Iraola praised Amorim's side.

Speaking to the media, Iraola said: "We are very far right now from United, I think United is a hell of a team and they've signed also very well.

"Today they showed that they are above us in this moment… We still have some time to prepare but we are not probably as good as we looked the other day and as bad as we looked today – somewhere in the middle. We have to continue preparing [for] the season."

Amorim was also impressed by the improvement in his squad compared to their disastrous 2024-25 season. The Portuguese coach emphasised United's growing chemistry on and off the pitch, but urged caution with tougher tests ahead.

Amorim said: "We are improving. But again, it's a preseason game. The pressure is going to be so much different during the season.

"I think they are playing better also because they are connecting better with each other. Not just on the pitch, but off the pitch. I think they are stronger, they are faster. You can see the intensity is completely different [compared to last season].

"I can see the data from the minutes are completely different. It's important for them to understand that the same players can play a different game."

Pant: 'Whatever happens, I had to be back on the ground'

Capitals skipper says he took his time but always believed he could change the game

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Mar-2024After a short cameo in his first game back after a life-threatening car accident in December 2022 and a laboured 28 in his second, Rishabh Pant blazed a 32-ball 51 as Delhi Capitals brought up their first win of the season against Chennai Super Kings. He was 23 off 23 at one point, but hit his next eight balls for 28 runs before slicing a skier to long-off.”See, as a cricketer I don’t think about [feeling like being back], but at the same time I have to give my 100% each and every day,” Pant said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “So what I did was I took my time initially because I haven’t played much cricket in the last one-and-a-half to two years so I thought I have to give myself enough time.”At the same time I kept believing that I could change the match at the end.”Then he was asked how long he had waited to be back on the field.”One-and-a-half years,” Pant said. “Because every day I love to be on the field and this is something I have depended my life on.”Yes, that one-and-a-half years was a wait but at the same time you’ve got to keep doing what you can as a cricketer and keep learning from it.”Pant said he never worried about not being able to play cricket again.”I think I always had self-belief that whatever happens in life, I need to be back on the ground,” he said. “That was the thought process and I never thought about anything else.”Prithvi Shaw played some attractive shots up top•BCCI’Shaw put himself on the line all the way’Opener Prithvi Shaw made his first appearance of the season, after being overlooked for Capitals’ first two games. He marked it with a 27-ball 43 that included two sixes and four fours.”I think definitely he has been working hard from last two weeks and he put himself on the line all the way,” Pant said about Shaw. “And we thought that it’s time to give him a chance and he flourished today.”Pant was also all praise for a “clinical” bowling display.Khaleel Ahmed gave Capitals the perfect start with the ball, removing Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra in his first spell of three overs and giving away just nine runs. That set the tone for an impressive bowling show that meant that even after MS Dhoni clobbered Anrich Nortje for 20 runs in the final over, Capitals won by as many runs.”I think bowlers have been very clinical today. Yes, we talked about we can all learn from our mistakes and I can say that we have learned,” Pant said.A 68-run stand between Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell threatened to swing the momentum CSK’s way, but Axar Patel took a sharp return catch to break the stand in the 11th over. Mukesh Kumar was introduced in the 14th and he derailed the chase with back-to-back wickets of Rahane and Sameer Rizvi.Mukesh finished with three wickets, and he could have had a fourth but Khaleel shelled a chance to give Dhoni a reprieve off his second ball.”I think it will depend on match to match, but at the same time if Mukesh can bowl at the death it’s very nice,” Pant said about Mukesh’s role in the team. “The good thing about today is that he got injured but he still came back to the field and bowled that superb over.”

Kohli on his two-month break from cricket: 'A surreal experience not to be recognised'

Virat Kohli, after his match-winning 77 against Punjab Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, opened up about his two-month break when his wife Anushka Sharma gave birth to their second child. Kohli missed India’s home Test series against England as he and his family spent time away from the country.”We were not in the country. We were at a place where people were not recognising us. Just time together as a family, just to feel normal for two months,” Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony. “For me, for us as a family, it was a surreal experience.”Of course, having two kids, things become totally different from a family perspective. So just the ability to be together, the connections that you make with your older child, it’s amazing.”I mean, I couldn’t have been more grateful to God for the opportunity that I got to spend time with my family.”Kohli spoke about how he enjoyed not being treated like a celebrity.”And yeah, just the place that we were in, I was telling the guys that when we came back, the voices back home felt that much louder,” he said. “I couldn’t look up because I was just not used to being called my name for two months. And then immediately you hear these loud noises and then you’re back in it all again.”But it was beautiful. It’s an amazing experience to just be another person on the road and not be recognised and just carry on about life that normally people would on a daily basis,” he said.Kohli also spoke about the love he gets from the RCB fans, especially in Bengaluru, having played for the franchise since the inception of the IPL.”It’s been going on for years and you know, people talk about a lot of other things when you play sport. The achievements, the stats, the numbers. Look at the end of the day when you look back you’re not going to think of the numbers and the stats. It’s the memories that you create,” Kohli said, before citing the Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid. “Famously Rahul in the change room nowadays says exactly the same to us. When you play, you play your heart out because you’re going to miss these times when you’re with your friends in the change room playing in front of fans.”So the relationship that’s happened organically over so many years it’s something that I can never ever forget. Just the love and the appreciation and the backing I’ve received for so many years that’s been amazing.”Kohli, however, knows that he has to make changes to his game to keep up with the ever-evolving nature of T20 cricket.”Well I mean you have to [make additions to your game],” he said while speaking about stepping out to fast bowlers and hitting them over cover, as opposed to playing the grounded cover drive that he is so famous for.”People know I play the cover drive pretty well so they’re not going to allow me to hit gaps and with guys like KG [Kagiso Rabada] and Arshdeep [Singh] as well, he’s tall. So, I mean, if they’re hitting length, you have to create some momentum in the ball.”And once you’re closer to the ball, you kind of negate the bounce that’s going to happen. You meet it earlier.”So, I mean, you have to come up with a game plan here and there and try to keep improving your game,” Kohli said, before issuing a friendly reminder.”I know my name is nowadays quite attached to just promoting the game in many parts of the world when it comes to T20 cricket. But, I’ve still got it, I guess.”

Canada squad World Cup 2026: Which players will make it to the showpiece in USA, Mexico and Canada?

All you need to know about Canada's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Canada played in only their second World Cup in 2022, and it was their first appearance since 1986. They will once again be part of the tournament in 2026 as one of the co-hosts, alongside the United States and Mexico.

Although their performance in the 2025 Gold Cup was somewhat disappointing, they had a successful campaign at the 2024 Copa America.

In their debut Copa America, the Canadians reached the semifinals, losing only to the eventual champions and reigning world champions, Argentina, once in the group stage and again in the semifinals.

In their six World Cup matches so far, Canada have yet to secure a win. They lost all their group stage games in both 1986 and 2022. In 2026, the Reds will be eager to break that drought and celebrate their first ever World Cup victory in front of a home crowd.

The team has some exciting talent and one of the top strikers currently playing in Europe. Will they be able to make history this time? Let's explore their potential squad for the tournament.

    Goalkeepers

In the goalkeeping department, Canada have two quality goalkeepers who could both start at the World Cup next year – Dayne St. Clair and Maxime Crepeau. Both keepers have been regular starters for their respective MLS clubs as well as the Canadian national team.

At the 2025 Gold Cup, coach Jesse Marsch alternated between Crepeau and St. Clair throughout the tournament. Jonathan Sirois of Montreal is also in contention to make a case for himself in Marsch's squad at the showpiece event next year.

    Defenders

Canada's backline comprises talented youngsters as well as experienced players who have been part of the national setup for a while now, with one of those players being Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies. Davies is undoubtedly one of the most influential players in the Canadian team and will be a crucial asset for Marsch's side once he returns from injury. If the co-hosts are to make a deep run in the tournament, Davies will need to perform at the highest level.

Another important defensive figure for Canada is Davies' full-back partner, Alistair Johnston of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. Johnston made his debut for Canada in 2021 and has been the team’s first-choice right-back ever since.

Along with the full-back pairing, Canada also have strong defenders in Derek Cornelius, who plays for Marseille in Ligue 1, and the young Luc De Fougerolles, who features for Fulham in the Premier League. Niko Sigur, Joel Waterman, and Kamal Miller are also solid options and could have important roles to play in Marsch's squad for the 2026 World Cup.

    Midfielders

Along with a stable defensive setup, Canada have a reasonably strong midfield as well. Alongside homegrown young talents, Jesse Marsch's side will also have some top European-level players at his disposal for the showpiece event next year.

Tajon Buchanan of Inter Milan provides the co-hosts with versatility, as he can play in midfield, full-back, and wide midfield roles. Young Ismael Kone is another talented prospect who currently plays for Marseille in Ligue 1, while Stephen Eustaquio has been a regular starter for Porto in the Primeira Liga.

Jacob Shaffelburg, Mathieu Choiniere, and Ali Ahmed have also been in the mix to start for Canada at the World Cup and could be part of Marsch's plans.

    Attackers

In the attacking region, Canada have several threats, with the primary one being Juventus forward Jonathan David. The Canadian centre-forward is currently regarded as one of the best in his position in Europe, which led to his move to the Italian giants from Lille in Ligue 1.

Alongside David, Cyle Larin and Daniel Jebbison are also quality players who could complement him in the attacking third.

Ao longo da última temporada, Pedro passou a integrar alguns treinos com os profissionais e ganhou espaço com Vitor Pereira, mas não fez sua estreia profissional.

Rain washes out final day as Middlesex draw with Leicestershire

No final-day play possible in match that was blighted by the weather from the first day

Rain ruined any chance of a result at Lord’s•Getty Images

Middlesex 407 for 8 (Robson 162, du Plooy 131) drew with Leicestershire 306 (Handscomb 109, Bamber 4-68) Middlesex’s Vitality County Championship clash with Leicestershire ended in a damp squib of a draw with no play possible on the final day.The hosts led by 101 with two wickets left going into day four, but the rain which washed out the first day’s action returned with a vengeance early on the final morning drenching the outfield.Umpires Paul Baldwin and Robert White gave the ground every chance to recover, calling an early tea at 3:10pm following a 2:35pm inspection. However, further rain in the interim led to the abandonment at 3:25pm..The hosts earn 15 points to Leicestershire’s 12 leaving them both on 68 points, six shy of leaders Sussex. Middlesex however sit above the Foxes in the table on games won.Toby Roland-Jones, Middlesex’s captain, said: “It’s frustrating. We’ve lost two full days of a game we feel we’ve played pretty good cricket in and certainly the only reason we’ve ended up only 100 ahead is through I guess trying to fast forward things a little bit on that third evening.”When you find yourselves here with the way this place can dry and have two days where it hasn’t stopped raining is incredibly rare. Once you get that window here it can be pretty good to go in a couple of hours, so we’ve just been unlucky that’s not been the case.”The most important thing is we can be happy about the way we have gone about our cricket once more. Set 300 to try and hunt and get past, the guys went about it with great skill. That partnership between Robbo (Sam Robson) and Leus (Du Plooy) was obviously great to watch.”
