Spain manager said he had “complete peace of mind” as Morata stepped up for his penalty in the Nations League final, but the striker was the only one to miss as Portugal won 5-3 in the shootout following a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

Morata has been at the heart of Spain’s recent success, captaining the side during Euro 2024 and playing a vital role in guiding them to the title. But the 32-year-old striker came under heavy fire from fans after missing a crucial penalty in the Nations League final. Morata recently shared his battle with anxiety attacks and admitted he is now contemplating retirement from international football, having received death threats following the defeat.
Notably, it's not the first time that the former Atletico Madrid forward has opened up about his struggles with mental health. In October 2024, Morata had revealed that he was battling depression right before the 2024 Euros.
WHAT LUIS DE LA FUENTE SAID
De la Fuente said that he had no doubts the striker would score the penalty in the final and insisted he would have no hesitation in selecting him again for the penalty.
“I was convinced he was going to score it and make us champions. With the peace of mind that he's one of our specialists. Of course, I would give him that penalty again. He took it with complete conviction; I believed he was going to give us glory. The responsibility is mine because I chose the five responsible," he said to .
Addressing Morata’s possible retirement, the coach reaffirmed his support and said the doors to the national team will always be open for the veteran striker.
"The doors to the national team will always be open to him, but whether he's a number nine or another role. He could come to support the group or tell us anecdotes, which is very funny. I haven't explained myself well enough to understand whether you understood that he's going to be a starter."

Sullivan earns first MLS start in 1-0 loss to Nashville SC15-year-old USMNT prospect showed flashes of brillianceBecame the second-youngest MLS starter everGet the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowWHAT HAPPENED?
Cavan Sullivan, 15, earned his first professional MLS start for the Philadelphia Union Saturday evening as they fell to Nashville SC 1-0.
A match between the top two teams in the Eastern Conference heading into Matchday 22 of the campaign, Union manager Bradley Carnell took a gamble on the U.S. men's national team prospect amid a shortage of attacking players due to both international call-ups and injuries.
Sullivan, who signed the largest Homegrown deal in MLS history last summer, has a clause in his contract with Philly that upon age 18, he will transfer to English Premier League side Manchester City.
Saturday marked his seventh MLS appearance of the season. He logged 61 minutes in his largest appearance of the MLS campaign so far.
Nashville's winning goal came in the 100th minute of the match, with former league MVP Hany Mukhtar sinking home from the penalty spot.
AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE
Sullivan's biggest MLS test as a professional was a monumental and historic evening as he became Philadelphia's youngest-ever starter in league action.
His performance itself was what most would expect from a teenage prospect with the hype behind him that he has — some truly impressive moments, but some errant touches and passes as well.
Across the 61 minutes he played, Sullivan registered a passing percentage of 62.5 percent, completing 15 attempts. He registered an xG of .07 and earned a yellow card.
Overall, though, he impressed in moments on and off the ball. His work rate was excellent, and he followed a relative shape well while playing both left and right wing throughout the match. Perhaps his best action on the evening, he showed an extreme willingness to press off the ball and was unafraid to go into 50-50 challenges as well.
DID YOU KNOW?
This is the third professional start with the Union's first team in Sullivan's career, with his first coming in a U.S. Open Cup match against Indy Eleven – a penalty shootout win for Philadelphia. Sullivan also went 90 minutes in a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
Sullivan admitted he has aspirations to be a part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup roster with the senior USMNT.

Realistically, both teams will just want to finish their World Cup on a high, as they meet at Eden Gardens

It looks like Pakistan may finish as the best of the rest for a second straight ODI World Cup•AFP/Getty Images
Big picture: Pakistan chasing the almost impossibleSo here we are: one last time in the group stages at Eden Gardens, and for both of these sides – almost certainly – one last time at this World Cup. As title defences go, it was an all-timer of a disaster for England, comparable not just with other cricketing fizzle-fests, but perhaps all sport: think France at the FIFA World Cup in 2002, or Lleyton Hewitt’s first-round exit at Wimbledon the year later. England went nearly a month between their only two World Cup wins, with six defeats – many of them pastings – littering their campaign, one so poor it could yet knock them out of the 2025 Champions Trophy.England’s brand of cricket has been high-risk-high-reward for about eight years now, and having enjoyed so much white-ball success with it, the risks finally appeared to catch up this time. That style feels like it requires ultimate buy-in from players, and that requires confidence, which only comes from results.Once the results began to turn awry – first a beatdown against New Zealand and then an upset against Afghanistan – things snowballed very quickly. Panic against South Africa, when they made three changes and unwisely chose to field first, was punished to the fullest. They would spend the next fortnight touring the country getting beaten by one side after another, before a relatively respectable showing against Netherlands secured them their second win. Team selection baffled, shot selection sometimes even more so.Against Pakistan, though, they have the chance to sign off a wretched tournament on something resembling a high. Several of this England squad may not wear an ODI shirt again – certainly not in a World Cup – and it’s perhaps fitting that the last side they play against before their likely break-up is Pakistan. This brand of England has sizzled more against Pakistan than any other side, winning 14 of their 18 completed ODIs since the 2015 World Cup, including a then-World record total of 444 at Trent Bridge. Here’s a chance to play the old hits one last time.On Wednesday, England broke a spell of 29 days without winning a game at the World Cup•Associated Press
In Pakistan cricket, hope is the last thing you lose, and so despite the near-insurmountable odds against semi-final qualification, they keep on dreaming. Qualification requires beating England by about 290 runs, and while England have had a bad tournament, it’s not an ideal position to be for Babar Azam’s men. It has been a campaign that has mirrored their 2019 tournament with frustrating faithfulness, losing just enough games to leave them adrift of New Zealand on net run rate (NRR). In the final game that year, they required a similarly improbable win over Bangladesh. It didn’t happen then, and it’s unlikely to happen now.Pakistan will be annoyed that several of their players lost their form at the exact same time leading to their worst mid-World Cup run in history, when they lost four consecutive matches to leave them facing the exit. As with 2019, they lost one winnable game too many – West Indies in 2019, and Afghanistan in 2023 – and never quite had the clarity of purpose to keep their eyes on an NRR which remained negative for the best part of the tournament. To get past New Zealand now requires a miracle, and a sustained commitment to progressive cricket that Babar has frankly been unable to inspire his side to in all his years at the helm of Pakistan cricket. At best, he can emulate what Pakistan managed four years ago, and finish off as the best of the rest. On the evidence of the cricket they have played, it won’t exactly be an unfair assessment.Form guideEngland: LLLLW (last five completed ODIs, most recent first) Pakistan: WWLLLIn the spotlight: Jos Buttler and Fakhar ZamanAs puzzling as it was untimely, Jos Buttler’s sudden absence of form and confidence at this World Cup has been one of several low points from an England perspective. For a man who played such a pivotal part in clinching the trophy four years ago, his ascent to the captaincy should have been the zenith of his ODI career. This tournament, instead, has been its nadir. A 43 against New Zealand to open the tournament was as good as it got for England’s most destructive batter, failing to manage even half of that in any of his next seven innings. However, Pakistan are his favourite ODI opposition, his average and strike rate ballooning to 65.25 and 150.86, respectively, against them, compared to career numbers of 39.79 and 117.16. The World Cup may have long gone, but he still has the chance to secure for his side a trip to Pakistan in a couple of years’ time, with a win assuring England of a spot in the next Champions Trophy.Jos Buttler’s tournament to forget•ESPNcricinfo Ltd
Even as he found his touch to such devastating effect against New Zealand, Fakhar Zaman will be keenly aware of the poor timing of his drop in form. Just six months ago, he scored three successive hundreds and looked like the most dangerous opener any side would have at this World Cup. It was the sort of form he had maintained throughout this cycle, only to inexplicably elude him when it mattered most. Fakhar looked a shadow of his former self at the start of the tournament, and was dropped one game in. For a man made for the big occasion, he averaged 22 in World Cup matches until that point. He would finally remedy that with 81 and 126* in the two games since his return, but it’s destined to be just a little too late. At 33, this might just be Fakhar’s last World Cup game, which might free him up just that little bit more. And an unshackled Fakhar will always be one to watch.Team news: No changes likelyEngland turned in something resembling a complete performance against Netherlands, despite a middle-order wobble that threatened to destabilise. Wholesale changes to that team are unlikely.England: 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Dawid Malan, 3 Joe Root, 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Jos Buttler (capt/wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 David Willey, 10 Gus Atkinson, 11 Adil RashidPakistan’s bowling took a battering against New Zealand, but they are expected to field an unchanged side to the one that pulled off that near-miraculous DLS win chasing 402.Pakistan: 1 Abdullah Shafique, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam (capt), 4 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Iftikhar Ahmed, 7 Agha Salman, 8 Hasan Ali, 9 Mohammad Wasim Jnr, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris RaufPitch and conditions: Bowlers bewareThere’s some grass on what looks like a dry pitch. It’s also off-centre, which will result in a short boundary one side. It’s expected to be hot and quite humid, with rain not in the offing.Stats and trivia Buttler needs 66 more to become just the fifth England cricketer to 5000 ODI runs. Of the four who have come before, only Joe Root boasts a higher average. While England won the sides’ first three World Cup meetings, the tables have turned since. Pakistan have lost a World Cup match to England just once since 1983, winning five of their last six.Quotes”Look, there should be hope at all times. WHAT HAPPENED?
Fati has officially joined Monaco on loan from Barcelona with a €11 million (£9m/$13m) buy option, and wasted no time declaring his admiration for fellow new arrival Pogba, calling the Frenchman’s presence at the club “a dream.”
Both players arrive at Monaco hoping to reignite their careers: Fati endured another injury-hit year at Brighton and Barca, while Pogba hasn't played in nearly a year due to fitness and suspension issues. While, the later is still training individually, Fati was involved in Monaco’s session on Thursday and spoke glowingly about their new chapter together.

WHAT ANSU FATI SAID
In his official unveiling at Monaco, Fati expressed excitement about teaming up with Paul Pogba, while speaking to the press, calling it a surreal moment given the midfielder's status in world football and among his peers at La Masia:"I've admired him since I was little. My friends' idol is Pogba. That was the case during his time at La Masia. I'm going to play with him, sharing the dressing room with him is a pleasure."
Fati also praised Pogba’s return to the spotlight after a long absence from the game due to injury and suspension, and expressed hope for the season ahead: "Everyone knows what a great player he is," insisted Ansu Fati. "I am very happy for him. The football world is also happy that he is back in action. He has been a great player in recent years for his clubs and his country. We hope to have a great year together."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
This double swoop is a bold new direction for Monaco, blending high-risk, high-reward talent. Fati (22) and Pogba (31) both need a fresh platform after frustrating seasons, and Ligue 1 could be the stage to deliver it.
Fati struggled with injuries during his Brighton loan and managed only 11 appearances for Barca last season. Pogba, meanwhile, joins Monaco on a free transfer until 2027, having been released by Juventus. With Eric Dier also arriving, Monaco’s summer strategy looks like a savvy mix of experience and raw potential.

Prasidh, who has 29 wickets in 17 ODIs, last played for India in two ODIs against Australia during the series just before the World Cup. He took three wickets in those games and also took five wickets in as many matches for Karnataka in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.Prasidh had marked his return from a long layoff due to a stress fracture of the back when India toured Ireland in August and was also part of the Asia Cup squad, though he was largely on the bench and only played one game against Bangladesh.
After Hardik got injured, India dropped Shardul Thakur from their XI and brought in Suryakumar Yadav and Mohammed Shami, choosing to go in with six specialist batters, one allrounder, and four specialist bowlers in their World Cup games against New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka. While Suryakumar has made only 63 runs at a strike-rate of 105 in three innings, Shami has been a gamechanger, picking up 14 wickets in 22 overs at an average of 6.71 and economy of 4.27.With seven wins in seven games, India were the first team to qualify for the semi-finals following their 302-run win against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. Their next match against South Africa – on Sunday in Kolkata – could decide which team finishes top of the points table, before they play their final league fixture against Netherlands in Bengaluru on November 12.
