The former Manchester United man outshone Roma’s Matias Soulé and Como’s rising star Assane Diao to secure the top individual honour for the month. McTominay netted five goals in three successive league appearances, becoming an instrumental figure in Napoli’s late-season title surge.

McTominay’s popularity in Naples has taken on a life of its own. Locals have affectionately dubbed him “McFratm” — a blend of his name and the Neapolitan term for “brother” or “mate.” This admiration reached new heights when a shrine dedicated to the Scotsman appeared in the city’s historic centre. Tucked away on Vico San Nicola a Nilo, the tribute features rosary beads, flowers, and candles, all surrounding an artwork that includes his nickname and the letters “N4” — a nod to the Naples football community and McTominay’s newfound place within it.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

A statement from Serie A read: "The EA SPORTS FC Player Of The Month award for April has been assigned to Napoli player Scott McTominay. The trophy will be presented during the pre-match of Napoli vs Genoa, scheduled for Sunday, 11th May 2025 at 8.45 pm at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium in Naples. The five goals he scored in April alone put Napoli back on top of the table and allowed the player to set his own personal record for goals in a season. He is the first Scotsman to win the Serie A Player of the Month award, an award that has been won a total of 11 times, out of 53 editions, by a Napoli player, a club that holds the absolute record in this special classification”.

With just three games remaining in the season, Napoli find themselves tantalizingly close to lifting the Scudetto. The three-point cushion over Inter Milan provides some breathing room, but Conte’s squad knows there’s no margin for error as they approach the final stretch. Napoli's next challenge comes on Sunday, when they host Genoa at the iconic Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. A win there would edge them even closer to the league crown, a feat that would mark an incredible achievement for both the club and McTominay in his first season in Italy.

'He's eager to continue' – no hint from Warner on impending Test retirement, says McDonald

Australia coach doesn’t expect the controversy over the leadership ban issue to affect the out-of-form opener against South Africa

Struggling opener David Warner has “not hinted” at an impending Test retirement, according to head coach Andrew McDonald.Warner had said last month that he was not going to play the longest format beyond another 12 months. However, his experience is pivotal for Australia’s tour of India early next year. And, before that, he is expected to play his 100th Test starting Boxing Day against South Africa, who round off the series at his home ground at the SCG just after that. It could prove something of a fitting send off, but McDonald was confident of Warner extending his Test cricket beyond the home summer.”He’s eager to continue on at this stage. He has not hinted [at] anything else,” McDonald said. “His appetite for the work – in and around training – is still there. He’s busy at the crease, and you’ve seen signs that he is going well. He’s just found different ways to get out, and sometimes that can happen.Related

Warner's lack of red-ball prep shows in waning Test returns

“We are building towards a World Test Championship [final], and he wants to be part of that. So that’s a clear focus for us, and we’ve got South Africa as a part of that. And then on to India.”As Australia’s other top-order batters feasted on a listless West Indies bowling in the series – Australia declared each of their four innings during comprehensive victories in Perth and Adelaide – Warner missed out each time, with just 102 runs at an average of 25.50.It continued a rut for 36-year-old Warner, who has scored only 675 runs at 28.12 in 25 Test innings since his last century in January 2020. Pressure has increased on Warner, with speculation building on his Test career ahead of tough tours of India and England next year, where he has modest records. But unless something dramatic happens against South Africa, Warner is set for his third Test tour of India, where he has never scored a century, and averages just 24 from 16 innings. And his wealth of experience is seen as important for a team likely to boast several batters who have never played Test cricket there.”We’ll see what happens in the next three Test matches. But at this stage, he’s firmly in our thoughts for India,” McDonald said. “We’ve seen the more times you tour certain areas of the world, the better you get at it.David Warner hasn’t scored a century in 16 Test innings in India•AFP

“But it’s also the knowledge that he can pass on to the younger players in and amongst that. We really value our senior players – both on and off the field – in terms of that education process. So there’s huge benefit for those players to be touring those areas, and albeit if they don’t play, they can still have an impact.”Warner has also been engulfed in controversy after withdrawing a bid before the second Test against West Indies to have his lifetime leadership suspension lifted. But McDonald felt that Warner had the mental resolve to overcome that saga.Ahead of what should be a tough three-match series against South Africa – who boast a star-studded pace attack – Warner has been backed to shrug off any distraction from the lingering off-field tumult before the first Test at the Gabba starts on December 17.”He’s great at compartmentalising, [and] separating the off-field from the on-field. And I think most of the great champions do that very well,” McDonald said. “I sense this situation is not different. We respect and understand David’s decision to withdraw from that appeals process.’He’s moved forward, we’re moving forward as a team, and we’ve got a seriously good opponent confronting us at the Gabba. So our focus is firmly on that… and so is David’s.”

Maddinson and Hosein fire Renegades to big win

Melbourne Renegades captain Nic Maddinson plundered a scintillating 87 against Brisbane Heat to set up a 22-run victory in his 100th BBL game.Maddinson got out of the blocks quickly, kept his cool when four wickets fell in a clump, and put his foot down again late to lift the Renegades to 7 for 166 batting first in Cairns after being sent in.West Indies international Akeal Hosein opened the bowling for Renegades with his left-arm spin and dismissed opener Max Bryant for a duck with his fifth delivery. The momentum stayed with Renegades from then on.Hossein was playing his first game in the BBL and was the dominant bowler on the night to give Renegades a great start to the new campaign after finishing bottom of the ladder last season.Heat recruit Colin Munro (35 off 30 balls), with 65 T20 internationals to his credit for New Zealand, was finding top form with the bat before he was run out by a direct hit from Tom Rogers. When Heat skipper Jimmy Peirson was bowled by Hossein for 43 off 30 deliveries in the 15th over the required rate was nearing the unachievable.Maddinson earlier set the platform for victory. He took 20 off Xavier Bartlett’s second over and a further 22 off his third in a 49-ball innings, including 10 fours and three sixes, that produced his highest score in T20 cricket. Andre Russell (35 off 28 balls) celebrated his return to Renegades with a powerhouse innings including three sixes. The visitors rocketed to 0 for 65 off six overs before Sam Harper was well caught at fine leg by Josh Brown off the first delivery bowled by the impressive James Bazley.Renegades lost 4 for 13 in four overs due to some shrewd captaincy by Peirson and smart bowling by spinners Mitch Swepson and Matt Kuhnemann. Swepson knocked over Jake Fraser-McGurk with a classic googly. Then Kuhnemann took two wickets in one over by slowing down his pace and bamboozling Aaron Finch and off-season recruit Jono Wells. That was when Maddinson and Russell took control in a 78-run stand off 46 deliveries. Maddinson, when on 42, was involved in a bizarre incident when he played a pull-shot off Mark Steketee. The ball lobbed over the stumps but one bail came off. On review it was clear that the dislodged bail was an unexplainable mystery but no fault of the batter.

Man Utd now set to make £33m offer plus Hojlund to sign "fantastic" star

Manchester United find themselves in a transitional period on and off the field, though there is always a growing level of anticipation from fans surrounding potential new arrivals at Old Trafford.

Rasmus Hojlund's struggles at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim has had a mixed start to life in the Manchester United hotseat, but most Premier League fans will allow the Portuguese boss some grace before fully judging his tenure at Old Trafford once he is given ample time to recruit players that synchronise with his tactical framework.

Midweek yielded a much-needed victory over Ipswich Town, lifting the Red Devils into 14th position with 11 league matches left to fulfil before the curtain comes down on a tumultuous campaign.

Cup competitions may be his best chance of salvaging something from the wreckage, given routes to Champions League and Europa League qualification remain open via the Europa League and FA Cup.

While Andre Onana and Patrick Dorgu’s mix-up against Ipswich demonstrated that Manchester United’s defensive frailties remain, their lack of deliverance in attack this season hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Rasmus Hojlund has struggled to score consistently for the Red Devils this term, registering seven goals in 34 appearances across all competitions.

Amorim has put the Denmark international’s woes down to a lack of chance creation, calling on the supply line to offer better support, stating: “It’s clear, as a team, we are not helping Rasmus. We don’t create a lot of chances. Rasmus has a lot of potential. If we improve the way we play the game, he will have more opportunities to score.”

Clearly, there is a disconnect as Manchester United look to piece together their attacking jigsaw, but could an unexpected twist now be in store for Hojlund despite a public show of faith from the manager?

Man Utd prepare Victor Osimhen offer with surprise twist

According to Calciomercato, Manchester United are preparing a £33 million offer for Victor Osimhen, which also includes Hojlund moving to Napoli in exchange this summer.

Before his £72 million transfer to the Red Devils from Atalanta, the reigning Serie A champions were interested in bringing the Denmark international to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

On the flip side, Osimhen has thrived on loan at Galatasaray this campaign, registering 20 goals and five assists in 27 appearances under Okan Buruk.

Labelled “fantastic” by former Nigeria boss Jose Peseiro, the Indomitable Lions forward is reportedly open to joining Manchester United should the possibility become a reality this summer.

After establishing himself as one of the most clinical strikers across the globe, there is plenty of reason to suspect that he may be the missing ingredient in attack for a side that has flattered to deceive in front of the target across 2024/25.

With Joshua Zirkzee morphing into a foil for the main man through the middle, Osimhen arriving at Old Trafford would send a signal of intent to the Red Devils’ Premier League competitors ahead of next term.

Gary Lineker reacts to England call-up talk for Newcastle star Lewis Hall

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has been discussing a possible England call-up for Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall after the young full-back picked up another assist in the win over Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle prepare for Liverpool at Anfield

The Magpies will be looking to continue from where they left off when they play Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night – although perhaps hoping to replicate their first-half performance against Forest over 90 minutes this time.

Three points for Eddie Howe’s side could see them end the evening in the top four, as their chances of returning to the Champions League look better and better with every goal Alexander Isak slams home.

Would this make the Magpies stronger or weaker?

Ahead of the game against Liverpool, Howe has been speaking about midfielder Lewis Miley, and he has backed him to be an “outstanding” player for Newcastle “for a number of years”. This comes as Miley scored against Forest on Sunday in what was his first Premier League start of the campaign.

“He can be anything – he could really solidify that position and be outstanding for us for a number of years. He’s going to need a bit of luck to do that – every player needs to stay fit and injury free – that’s why we need to look after him.

Lewis Miley scores for Newcastle

“He can do a bit of everything; he’s got the running capacity – the big lungs that enable him to physically produce what he needs to in those positions. He has all the technical and, most importantly, mental capabilities. He’s played some huge games but played them like he would in training.

“He’s very composed – one of our best technical players – so I see a bright future, but he will have all the pitfalls that young players have. He needs to stay humble and level, concentrate on his training, and listen to his coaches.”

Lineker reacts to England call-up talk for Lewis Hall

As Howe heaps praise on Miley, Lewis Hall has also received significant praise for his performances this season. Former England strikers Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer would not be surprised to see Hall get a call-up to the next England squad given his impressive form.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast (relayed by Give Me Sport), Shearer said: “I thought Lewis Hall was very, very good as well at left-back.

“I hope Thomas Tuchel has had a good look at him, and with an England squad not too far away, do not be surprised if he’s in it. Because he showed some really good form today, I thought he was excellent.”

Lineker then backed Shearer’s view: “I was just going to say exactly the same thing, Alan. I really like him, and he’s very impressive, both defensively and going forward.”

The 20-year-old, who joined the Magpies on a permanent basis in the summer, has featured in all the club’s Premier League games this season, starting 23 of the 26 games. Hall has yet to score this season but has five assists to his name, as he’s nailed down the left-back spot as his own, and he will now have his eyes on becoming an England regular.

Goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk handed Liverpool a comfortable 4-0 win and booked their place in the final at Wembley against Newcastle United, all while dealing a seismic blow to Postecoglou, who was just two games away from a piece of major silverware at Spurs before kick-off.

One small silver lining for the Lilywhites was Tel’s flashes of brilliance and overall positive performance, after coming off the bench to replace Richarlison, who was forced off with yet another injury.

Tel was spotted waving his Tottenham teammates on against Liverpool and encouraging them to get forward, while there were also glimpses of his real tidyness on the half-turn and attacking flair at times.

The 19-year-old, going off this cameo alone, could be crucial in helping to ressurrect Postecoglou’s stuttering campaign. Beyond 2024/2025, the question remains – will Tel still be a Spurs player next season?

Journalist shares what Tottenham are actually planning for Mathys Tel

Tottenham are convinced they’ve signed a “generational talent” in Tel, with journalist Dean Jones now sharing what the future holds in store for him after Spurs signed the attacker on loan with an option to buy.

According to Jones, speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast, Tottenham fully intend to sign Tel permanently, but the reporter personally doubts whether Postecoglou’s newest recruit wants the same thing.

“At the end of the day, even if it was a dry loan, which it was going to be, in that moment, I spoke to Tottenham and I wrote a story about it. It was like Tottenham still, I think I tweeted it, I think, rather than wrote about it, it was like, Tottenham still intend to make this a permanent signing,” said Jones.

“Like, this isn’t what they want, like they’ll do it. If this is the way to do it, then all they’ll do over the following months is try to convince him that this is the place for him.

Mathys Tel

“I still feel like the player doesn’t fully want to leave Bayern Munich, and even if he does really well here at Tottenham, he might see it as, well, if I do really well, I can play for Bayern Munich again. So maybe I’m being cynical about that, but I get that impression. He didn’t really want this transfer to happen, did he?

“It was only when Man United pulled out that it came back on the table because he wanted to go there.

“Yeah, I mean, there is an element, I imagine, that he really did want to go out and get minutes, whether that meant he wanted to depart Bayern permanently or not, it is a different question. But I’m quite interested with this whole Ange Postecoglou getting on the phone and basically being like, look, this is how I see you fitting into my system. This is where I foresee you getting minutes.”

£265,000-per-week Arsenal star could now be out injured until 2026

Mikel Arteta faces being without an Arsenal star until 2026, with the Spaniard dealt a serious blow after an injury update from N5.

The Gunners are already having to face the notion of this Premier League title race possibly being over, considering Liverpool are now 13 points clear after what has become a disastrous week for Arteta’s side.

Arsenal’s lack of a striking option was on full display once again on Wednesday as they failed to break Forest down time and time again, with makeshift front man Mikel Merino registering their only shot on target after Riccardo Calafiori had hit the post.

Arteta’s best hopes of winning a first piece of major silverware since their FA Cup triumph in 2020 lie in Arsenal’s Champions League campaign, with interim sporting director Jason Ayto planning summer recruitment ahead of a potentially more successful Premier League title challenge next term.

Arsenal manager MikelArteta on the touchline

Following long-term injuries to both Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, some reports have even suggested that Arsenal could look to sign two strikers before 2025/2026.

RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko is apparently a top target for Arteta, with a move for Newcastle United star Alexander Isak appearing too difficult, while it is also believed that Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins remains on Arsenal’s radar after their failed January bid.

Arsenal could be without Gabriel Jesus until 2026

Now, according to journalist Steve Kay, the need for a new centre-forward or two is made all the more prevalent by the extent of Jesus’ injury. The £265,0000-per-week striker was just hitting a rich vein of form, before rupturing his ACL during Arsenal’s FA Cup third round defeat to Man United, and it appears he could be out for the foreseeable.

Kay, speaking on KS1 TV, says that Jesus could be out injured for Arsenal until 2026, with the Brazilian facing a leave of absence for the rest of this calendar year in a major blow for the Gunners and Arteta.

“Yeah, with Ollie Watkins. I had a conversation today with the main man, and Arsenal aren’t going away from Ollie Watkins,” said journalist Steve Kay.

“Because of the injury to Gabriel Jesus, he may not be expected back until possibly into 2026, maybe November, late, late. I’ve been told that Ollie Watkins is still on the agenda because they need two strikers.

“That £40m will stay on the table and if Watkins is happy to come, he will come. I’ve also been told this will not affect going in for a main striker like a Sesko. It won’t be any more than £40m. £40m is the only number I know of, it may be a bit lower than that because it’s another year.”

"Special" Leeds target thinks they’ll get promoted and is open to joining

Leeds United have now been handed a boost ahead of their summer transfer business after the stance of one of their transfer targets became clear, with pressure now on to be in the Premier League next season to ensure that they land their man.

Leeds on course for Premier League

With just 14 games left of the season, Leeds United lead the way in the Championship. Daniel Farke’s side sit two points clear of Sheffield United, while they have a five point cushion to Burnley in third place, meaning that automatic promotion is firmly in their grasp.

It is a make-or-break fortnight for Leeds too. They face fourth placed Sunderland next before traveling to Sheffield United in a titanic tussle for top spot at the end of February, a game that could effectively seal them as title winners or send them back towards the chasing pack and leave them in danger of slipping into a play off spot for a second successive season.

However, having scored by far the most goals in the division this season, Leeds remain most people’s favourites to be promoted, and after a 4-0 thrashing of Watford Hornets boss Tom Cleverley even dubbed them “one of the best” Championship sides he’d ever seen.

“We were in the presence of a very strong Championship side. It is one of the best teams I have seen at this level,” he told reporters.

Now, it has emerged that confidence that Leeds will be promoted come the end of the campaign is shared even by some of their transfer targets.

Midfield target thinks Leeds will be promoted

That comes according to a report from Caught Offside, who relay quotes from Leeds target Eduard Spertsyan suggesting that a move to Leeds could be on the cards this summer.

Leeds were thought to hold a January interest in the no.10, who currently plays for Russian outfit Krasnodar, where he has grabbed six goals and three assists so far this season.

However, no move materialised, with suggestions that Leeds were priced out of a move for the Armenian international. Despite this, the attacking midfielder has left the door open to a future move to Elland Road, adding that he is keen to leave his current club.

“Why not?,” Spertsyan revealed when asked if he would consider a move to Leeds in the future. “They will most likely get into the Premier League, they are in first place.

“Yes, I want to leave, but I can’t leave the club [in the winter]. For them to let me go in the winter, the offer must be very good, and the club must have a great desire to sign me. This winter, that’s exactly what didn’t happen.”

The report adds that the midfielder, who was described as “special” by Ajax sporting director Sven Mislintat after they failed to sign him, is valued at £17 million, something that Leeds may only be able to afford should they secure promotion back to the top flight.

After missing out on Cameron Archer in January, Spertsyan could be the perfect alternative for Farke’s side.
