So, the track that FSG have chosen this winter is one that we all know and love: Liverpool are opportunistic in the transfer window, and will only act if that perfect prospect presents itself.
This might be frustrating for those of an Anfield persuasion, but there’s a reason why Liverpool have stayed ahead of the curve for the best part of a decade, probably behind only Manchester City and Real Madrid on the grand European scale.
It might not feel like it at times, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Liverpool chiefs aren’t just twiddling thumbs and spinning around ergonomic chairs, with plenty simmering behind the scenes as Arne Slot’s side chase down the Premier League title.
Liverpool managerArneSlot
We all want a shiny new signing to insinuate themself into the core of Liverpool’s first team, but sporting director Richard Hughes is currently embroiled in a fight to tie down the ‘big three’ to new contracts.
Moreover, Darwin Nunez’s future is up in the air. The likeable Uruguayan, sadly, might be moving on.
The latest on Darwin Nunez's future at Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp personally advocated Nunez’s signing after he scored 34 goals from 41 matches for Benfica in 2021/22, bagging twice against Liverpool in the Champions League.
Liverpool broke their transfer record to bring him in on a £85m deal, but it hasn’t gone to plan. For all his energy and spirit, the maverick has never managed to shake the wastefulness that has marred his career on English shores, having missed 50 big chances across 80 Premier League fixtures, as per Sofascore, and scoring only 22 times.
The word on the street is that Michael Edwards has reportedly rejected a £70m verbal proposal from Al Hilal for the 25-year-old, with FSG holding out for their £85m asking price. Some might find that ludicrous – Nunez, after all, has only scored four goals from 26 matches this term – but let’s see how it pans out.
It almost feels like Nunez has regressed under Slot’s wing, that he’s lost some of his chaotic energy and been minimised into something more simplistic. It’s not working for him.
The highly-charged number nine is a fan favourite and rightly so, but Slot carries himself with a business-like ruthlessness and that is one of the defining factors behind Liverpool’s success.

Liverpool lining up exciting Nunez replacement
If Nunez does leave this month, Liverpool would be wise to secure an instant replacement. Jayden Danns, 18, is a wonderful prospect but it would be negligible to heap such a burden on his shoulders.

As such, there might be some truth in The Northern Echo’s recent report that Liverpool have identified Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as a possible signing this month, though he is valued at £50m.
However, FSG are drawn to the idea of offering the £30m-rated Ben Doak as a makeweight, allowing them to welcome Semenyo to the fold in an affordable fashion.
The 25-year-old has been a standout figure at the Vitality Stadium this season and is also on Newcastle United’s radar. He could be the dynamic and versatile forward that the Reds need to push over the line in their title charge.

What Antoine Semenyo would bring to Liverpool
Bournemouth signed Semenyo from Bristol City for a £10.5 fee in January 2023, convinced by the electric winger’s performances in the Championship.
He sat on the fringes initially but went from strength to strength when Andoni Iraola replaced Gary O’Neil in the dugout, bagging eight Premier League goals last season and raising his game once more this term.
With six goals and three assists across 21 outings for the Cherries in 2024/25, Semenyo has the talent and the potency to make a difference in Liverpool’s squad, with his underlying data suggesting that he could actually prove to be an upgrade on Nunez.

You can see that Semenyo brings more to the table than Nunez, whose foibles have devolved into something damning. When Liverpool scouts weigh him up against Semenyo, who has been described as being “almost unplayable on his day” by reporter Ed Aarons, it’s clear that he’s in trouble.
Bournemouth’s dynamo, you see, likes to bring fire to his attacking efforts, peppering the goal with an obscene number of shots. His 4.1 strikes per game, in fact, are even more than Mohamed Salah’s 3.9 per game, so if Slot can increase his clinical edge, Liverpool might have a dangerous weapon indeed.
Analyst Ben Mattinson claimed that Semenyo would be the “perfect January signing” when discussing Arsenal’s interest, so why shouldn’t Liverpool push to sign him – especially with the Gunners in desperate need of fresh firepower?
Semenyo is simply operating at a higher level than his age-mate Nunez, and if Saudi suitors are willing to pay a big sum to take him off Liverpool’s hands, it seems like something of a no-brainer.
After all, Liverpool have skyrocketed into the ascendency under their Dutch coach’s management this term and must continue to lay down a steely framework to ensure that the mountain is crested and many more down the line.

Liverpool could move to sign a world-class player amid ongoing speculation about Alexander-Arnold’s future.
Tottenham are now holding internal talks over whether to launch an astonishing raid to sign a new defender in January, as they look to hand Ange Postecoglou reinforcements to save his season in north London, according to a fresh report.
Tottenham need work in January
After a raft of injuries, Tottenham have almost been forced into moving in the January transfer window as they look to improve on a woeful first half of the campaign. The Lilywhites sit adrift of the top four in Premier League, with more defeats than wins and with their style of football continuing to cause problems.
Injuries have more than played their part too, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both having missed large chunks of the season through injury, while Ben Davies’ injury has forced teenage midfielder Archie Gray into an unfamiliar centre-back position.

At the other end of the pitch, long-term injuries to both Richarlison and summer signing Wilson Odobert have left Postecoglou short on options in attack. Postecoglou is keen to add bodies in January, admitting as much before their 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
“[Transfer policy] can be disciplined, but we need a clear picture of where we’re at. There is a need to reinforce if we can, it’s not an easy time to do that in this window.
“The club is working hard behind the scenes to help the players we’ve got, who are giving everything in every game to try and get us through. We’re working hard to try to get reinforcements.”
Now, it has emerged that Tottenham are holding internal talks over a potentially exciting swoop.
Spurs eyeing Premier League defender
That comes as a fresh report from The Daily Mail, relayed by Goodison News, has claimed that Tottenham are holding internal talks over a potential move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as they look to improve their defence, with the Toffee star one of four players under consideration.
The 22-year-old shot to prominence at Goodison Park last season, with Alan Shearer hailing him as “magnificent” on the Premier League website 12 months ago.
Though linked with a move to Manchester United over the summer, he ended up remaining at Goodison Park but is now in the spotlight once more. That comes as the report claims that Tottenham are now holding internal talks over a potential move for the defender, who still has two and a half years left to run on his £35,000-a-week deal on Merseyside.
Though not enjoying his best season, Branthwaite would undoubtedly be a long-term Davies replacement, with the English defender still likely to improve in his career.

Any deal in January seems incredibly unlikely though, with Everton having reportedly slapped an £80m price tag on the defender’s head as they look to avoid relegation from the top flight, with Branthwaite one of the first names on Sean Dyche’s teamsheet when fit.
Should they fail with a move for Branthwaite, it is added that “Ko Itakura, Milan Skriniar and former Toffee Ben Godfrey all seen as alternative options”, with the latter thought to be available on loan from current side Atalanta.
Manchester City are now ready to pay £33 million to sign a 23-year-old midfielder as a long-term replacement for Rodri, according to a recent report.
Man City transfer news
It has all the makings to be a busy month for the Blues, as Pep Guardiola will want to make some fresh additions to his squad as they try to climb the Premier League table and get back to their best.

Manchester City could wave goodbye to some notable high earners this month.

The transfer rumours involving City started long before the transfer window opened, and in the last week they have continued to be mentioned with moves for all sorts of players. Signing a defender appears high on the agenda for Guardiola, and it was reported this week that City are ready to make a move for Juventus defender Nicolo Savona. The Premier League side are ready to make a move for the player this month, as he’s seen as a possible replacement for Kyle Walker, who they are willing to let go at some point this year.
It has also been recently claimed that City are willing to go all out and sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad after holding internal talks over a potential transfer. Zubimendi was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer, but that didn’t work out, and now City look keen to land the player but will have to trigger his £52 million release clause to do so.
Man City ready to pay £33 million to sign 23 y/o midfielder
Zubimendi is not the only midfielder on City’s transfer radar, as according to Italian outlet Messaggero, Man City are ready to make a move to sign Nicolo Rovella from Lazio in this transfer window.
Rovella, who has won two caps for Italy, is currently in the middle of a two-year loan deal at Lazio from fellow Italian side Juventus. The midfielder joined the Old Lady in January 2021 from Genoa, but he has only featured three times for the club as he’s had a loan spell at Monza as well as Lazio.
This report states that City are now interested in signing Rovella after scouring the transfer market for a new defensive midfielder after they suffered a blow earlier in the campaign with Rodri picking up a season-ending injury.

The 23-year-old has emerged on City’s radar, and the Blues are now willing to pay 40 million euros, which is roughly £33 million, to bring the midfielder to the Etihad this month. It is unclear how this transfer would work due to Rovella being on loan at Lazio, but if City make an offer Juventus can’t refuse, his loan will likely come to an end, and he will join the Premier League side.
Rory Burns leads Surrey’s response after record-breaking sixth-wicket stand
David Hopps12-Jul-2022They know their history in Yorkshire. When Adam Lyth and Jonny Tattersall broke Yorkshire’s sixth-wicket batting record, prolonged applause burst across North Marine Road the moment that Lyth flicked the ball off his hip. Such momentous achievements have always been met by an outbreak of White Rose pride but these days there is a touch of defiance, too – a statement that the much-chastised County Championship is deep-rooted and forever worthy of protection.Fortunately, by the time Lyth and Tattersall broke the record, the spectator vainly trying to come to terms with his new yellow-plastic rain-protector had decided that the risk of a shower had receded and removed it. He had become so entangled in it, failing to find the arm holes in several futile attempts, pulling it backwards and forwards over his head at various angles, that he would have found it impossible to clap.As far as the main stage was concerned, it was less about contortions than skill and concentration. Lyth and Tattersall had logged 239 runs on the first day and they had extended that to 305 in 77 overs when Lyth pulled Conor McKerr to deep square leg to fall for 183, an innings that spanned nearly eight hours and his highest score in his home county. Tattersall, on his Championship return, was left with an unbeaten, career-best 180 as Tom Lawes took three quick wickets after lunch and Yorkshire were dismissed for 521.Related

But they are not yet on solid ground and Surrey, the Championship leaders, 191 for 1 at the close, will imagine that they have the batting prowess to put Yorkshire under pressure on the final day. Dom Bess can anticipate a heavy workload and the offspinner took the only wicket to fall when he drew Ryan Patel down the pitch with one that dipped and turned a shade and Tattersall completed a straightforward stumping. There had still been life in the surface on a cloudy morning, for Dan Worrall in particular as he came down the hill, but Yorkshire’s attack rarely threatened. Rory Burns was calmness personified as he closed the second day on 93 not out. He was assured square of the wicket on both sides and his commitment to the long game was illustrated when he made only 10 runs in the last 12 overs of the day, from which he faced 33 balls. He had one moment of fortune, caught at first slip on 72 only to be reprieved because Shannon Gabriel, the West Indian quick who has joined Yorkshire on a short-term contract, had overstepped.Considering the overpowering nature of Yorkshire’s cricket history, it is instructional to reflect that five of the highest batting partnerships for each wicket have been made this century. Holmes and Sutcliffe are famously there for their 555 for the first wicket at Leyton in 1932 – the world record that wasn’t thanks to a faulty scoreboard – and Geoffrey Boycott makes an appearance for his 10th wicket stand of 149 with Graham Stevenson at Edgbaston in 1982 when he memorably remarked, with a lopsided grin, that was down to “his brawn and my brains”. But there are many names of modern vintage – Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan, Bairstow again with Joe Root. Lyth broke his own sixth-wicket record, too, a stand of 296 in league with Adil Rashid in the Old Trafford Roses match eight years ago. Flatter pitches for sure – markedly so – but Lyth, too, and the rest will enter Yorkshire folklore.Major renovations are in progress at North Marine Road•Matthew AllenFor Scarborough to protect its place in history, however beloved it is, the ground must remain solvent. Crowds here have been a little above 3,000 on the first two days which are reasonable, but well down on pre-Covid days and not entirely in keeping with the esteem in which the ground is held. A recent 10-year staging agreement with Yorkshire helps in an age when outgrounds are permanently under pressure but it is also ambitious to become an established centre for women’s cricket. It would have to address primitive broadcasting facilities to achieve that. But anyway, changes are afoot and that can only be positive. The very thought will have been enough to leave Yorkshire traditionalists on red alert because they routinely insist North Marine Road is perfect and want no messing with their memories. The last time it was suggested the place needed a revamp, a Yorkshire supporter on the wooden-benched banking took umbrage on and countered: “You don’t need a sofa to sit on”.Rest assured there are no unwelcome fripperies in a £500,000 upgrade. The first two phases – improved toilet facilities, better communications and new practice net facilities – are largely completed. The final phase, subject to planning approval, is a refurbishment of the incongruous West Stand, which will have new seating and a new ground-floor frontage which will also house a heritage museum and improved catering facilities – or, as they are known these days “innovative places to linger”.Scarborough is also an unusual place to linger for Clean Slate Filmz, Yorkshire’s main sponsor, which is making a biopic of Jhulan Goswami, the great champion of India women’s cricket, in September. Also attracting interest was Yorkshire’s 2nd XI match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield where Gary Ballance is continuing a low-key return to action after missing the bulk of the season with mental health issues. Ballance has made back-to-back hundreds so it appears from afar that he is feeling his way back successfully. He is one of seven people charged – and the only current player – by the ECB after their investigation into Azeem Rafiq’s racism allegations. There is no regulation that stops Yorkshire selecting him, but there is no suggestion that any 1st XI return is imminent and that seems to be the most sensible approach.Yorkshire’s fast-bowler injuries are also relenting. Ben Coad is also involved the 2nd XI fixture, although he is following a programme of limited workload and has yet to bowl, and Matthew Fisher has not given up hope of a match or two at the back end of the Championship season. He has been undertaking fielding drills during the lunch interval on the last two days as he recovers from a stress fracture.

Nottinghamshire 184 for 6 (Duckett 53*, Clarke 51) beat Durham 183 for 8 by four wickets Nottinghamshire Outlaws’ last desperate hopes of a seventh successive T20 quarter-final berth finally vanished despite a comfortable victory over Durham Jets by four wickets in the Vitality Blast at Trent Bridge. Amongst other things, they needed a tie, no less, in Leicester to retain any hope but Leicester just refused to oblige. It was at least a rousing farewell for Dan Christian, their departing veteran captain who led the Outlaws to T20 glory in 2017 and 2020. He could revel in watching 51 from 30 balls for Joe Clarke and Ben Duckett’s unbeaten 53 from 34 that helped bring success at the gallop with three overs to spare.Christian’s fellow Australian and opposite number, Ashton Turner, threatened to upstage things earlier with a rapid 33 as Durham’s third wicket added 54 in five overs but Steven Mullaney removed him and two new batters in four balls as the Jets backfired. From 98 for five with 51 balls to come, Michael Jones, the opener, reached 41 until brilliantly caught on the mid-wicket rope by Mullaney off Jake Ball and Durham finished with 183 for eight, late-order hitting bringing 70 from the final six overs. It proved far from enough. The evening had started painfully when the opening delivery, from Ball, cut back to strike Graham Clark flush in the box, flooring him and causing a three-minute delay for treatment. Durham, already out of quarter-final contention, chose to bat but lost Clark, slicing his drive for 14, and Ollie Robinson, who skied a swipe to the keeper, as Ball conceded only four in the fifth over. But in the later charge, Brydon Carse, batting at No.7, was dropped off Ball when twelve before surging to 25 from 17 balls when becoming Lyndon James’s maiden T20 scalp, whilst Ned Eckersley finished unbeaten with 23 from a dozen balls. Andrew Tye hit two sixes in his not-out 13.Even by the second over of the reply, however, with Liam Trevaskis taken for 19, the target seeemed less than daunting. The left-arm spinner had revenge of sorts when Alex Hales top-edged a sweep to go for 26 but the Outlaws had struck as many sixes in the reply’s first 47 balls as the Jets managed in their entire innings.Clarke, who had creamed 53 with Hales in 26 balls for the first wicket on a typically good Nottingham pitch with short boundaries inviting mayhem, then added another 55 in 35 balls with Duckett.Eventually miscueing against a leg-break from the Australian, Nathan Sowter, Clarke gave way to Mullaney, another victim of spin when soon stumped by Robinson off Trevaskis next over. James arrived to send his third and fifth balls for six off Carse and at the end of an over that cost 16, only 46 were needed from the final 42 balls.James fell smiting for 20 but, maintaining the tempo, Tom Moores hit his first four balls for boundaries until magnificently caught by Sowter who took the ball jumping on the boundary, threw it up before crossing the rope then grasped it again back on the field. Dramatic, indeed. But not enough, even though Sol Budinger fell stumped with three needed.

Flatter pitches for sure – markedly so – but Lyth, too, and the rest will enter Yorkshire folklore.Major renovations are in progress at North Marine Road•Matthew Allen
For Scarborough to protect its place in history, however beloved it is, the ground must remain solvent.

We're into week two of GOAL's Brits Abroad series, shining a light on the United Kingdom's finest exports playing their football elsewhere in the world. It does what it says on the tin.
With more and more homegrown stars choosing to take their talents across the globe, it's proving a tricky challenge trying to whittle them all down into one concise roundup. For example, Oli McBurnie scoring his first La Liga goal for Las Palmas – at the 26th time of asking – has been reduced to a mere footnote, such has been the busyness of his British compatriots. Sorry, Oli.
McBurnie's loss is the gain of several others however, with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham enduring mixed fortunes with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid respectively, while this week we take our first venture outside of Europe to see how an England international striker is getting on. Meanwhile, there's another Brit shining in La Liga and plenty more going on at AC Milan's house of English expats. Let's dive in…

Kane leads Bayern to derby win
Friday night's trip to Bavarian rivals Augsburg could have proven a banana skin for Bayern in their quest to wrestle back the Bundesliga title, and when Dimitrios Giannoulis gave the hosts the lead after half an hour, the fear of being caught by Bayer Leverkusen felt like an increasingly likely reality.
But Vincent Kompany's men rallied back and ended the night with three deserved points. Jamal Musiala – a Brit Abroad in another life – fired them level just before the break, before the game turned on its head when Cedric Zesiger received a second yellow card for scything down Kane on the counter. Augsburg were immediately made to pay when from the resulting free-kick, Michael Olise (again someone who could have chosen to represent England) delivered a delicious cross for the diving Kane to get his head on to nod the visitors ahead. An own goal from Chrislain Matsima deep into added time sealed the 3-1 win for Bayern.
The challenge on Kane from Zesiger was the subject of controversy as it appeared the Swiss defender had taken the ball first, while second yellow cards cannot be reviewed by VAR. Nevertheless, Kane was adamant the call was correct, labelling the tackle "dangerous" and that it "almost destroyed my ankle" when quizzed post-match. "It was a clear [second] yellow. He tackled me from behind on the counter. It was dangerous and I could've rolled my ankle. We also should've had a penalty after that. It's a bit swollen, but I'm used to that. I'm not worried. It's fine, it hurts a bit, but it should be fine for Tuesday [against Inter]," he said.
Even though Leverkusen secured a 1-0 victory the next day in the dying embers at Heidenheim, Bayern still boast a six-point lead atop the standings with only six Bundesliga games to go. Kane is rapidly closing in on his first career title.

Fuming Bellingham powerless to stop shock defeat
While Kane is on the cusp of winning a domestic title, Bellingham's is escaping his grasp with each passing week. Reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid had the chance to move level on points with leaders Barcelona on Saturday when they welcomed Valencia to the Santiago Bernabeu, yet it was an opportunity which escaped them.
It wasn't for the want of trying on Bellingham's part, coming up with an assist for Vinicius Junior, who saw a first-half penalty saved by inbound Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili (for which the Brazilian now owes him €50). No player made more chances than Bellingham's tally of four, either.
Valencia, who started Bournemouth loanee Max Aarons at right-back we should point out, managed to frustrate their hosts and grind out a 2-1 victory to ease their relegation fears. Mouctar Diakhaby had put them ahead early on prior to Vinicius' leveller, and Hugo Duro was on hand to snatch the win after five minutes of added time at the end of the second half, with Mamardashvili producing several stunning saves in between. Frustrated with how the match played out, Bellingham was caught kicking the VAR monitor at full-time and could now face retrospective action, including the threat of a ban.
"Nowhere near good enough from us. Must change for Tuesday!" Bellingham wrote on Instagram on Saturday evening. Madrid's only consolation was that Barca were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Betis later that night, meaning the gap between the Clasico rivals only stands at four points.
Gallagher wins penalty in Atletico comeback
Elsewhere in La Liga, Conor Gallagher made a tangible impact of his own to keep Atletico Madrid's faint title hopes alive. Diego Simeone's side went a goal down inside seven minutes at struggling Sevilla on Sunday, with Lucien Agoume scoring from the edge of the 18-yard box, and Atleti's nightmare run of late seemed to be following the same story.
They weren't behind for long, however. Midway through the first half, Gallagher bundled his way into the Sevilla penalty area and was felled by transfer gossip column regular Loic Bade, allowing Julian Alvarez to equalise from the spot. The 25-year-old Chelsea academy graduate, affectionately known as 'The Pitbull' in Spain, drew the most fouls at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and created two chances before being subbed for fresher legs late in the second half. Atletico would go on to steal the win courtesy of a superb solo effort from Pablo Barrios, ensuring they moved to within three points of Real Madrid and seven of Barcelona.
Gallagher appears to have found his role in Simeone's setup, often coming in off the left of a 4-4-2 and providing extra energy in the middle third. It's unlikely to yield any silverware in his first season on the continent, but playing at such a level should catch the eye of Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel.

Abraham & Tomori earn AC Milan draw
There's always going on at AC Milan, isn't there? The soap opera club put on another entertaining episode this weekend in a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina at San Siro, which, you guessed it, was full of drama and action in equal supply.
At the heart of the action were our Brits Abroad, which shouldn't be a surprise given four Englishmen play for the Rossoneri. On this occasion, it was two of their lesser stars in the spotlight.
La Viola raced into a two-goal lead inside 10 minutes and the San Siro crowd began to sour. Step forward Tammy Abraham, fresh from his scoring exploits against Inter in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg in midweek, to haul Milan off the canvas and pull one back, netting for only the third time in Serie A all season.
Under-fire manager Sergio Conceicao withdrew Yunus Musah – an England youth international before switching his allegiances to the USMNT to really make this piece come together – straight after Abraham's goal to try and keep the momentum. They had to wait until the second half to grab their equaliser though, with Fikayo Tomori's pass intended for Santiago Gimenez instead reaching Luka Jovic behind a sleeping Fiorentina backline, and he finished without an issue.
The three points could have gone either way down the stretch of a chaotic game but instead had to be shared, leaving Milan mired in ninth on 48 points, eight off a Champions League spot. Kyle Walker played all 90 minutes and picked up a yellow card for his troubles, though the most noteworthy of his affairs came off the pitch last week.
Mikel Arteta's side saw two more points slip away at Goodison Park after being pegged back in controversial fashion
Leandro Trossard's first-half strike was cancelled out by Iliman Ndiaye's controversial penalty as Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at Everton on Saturday.
With Tuesday night's crucial Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid looming large, Mikel Arteta made five changes to the team that beat Fulham in midweek, with the likes of Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka all left on the bench.
But in an open first half it was the much-changed visitors who broke the deadlock, with Trossard finishing well having been found by Raheem Sterling.
Saka and Martinelli were then introduced at half-time, only for Everton to level almost immediately through Ndiaye's spot-kick after Myles Lewis-Skelly was harshly adjudged to have pulled down Jack Harrison in the box, even though it was the Everton man who appeared to have fouled the Gunners teenager.
There were chances for Arsenal to still go on and win it, with Odegaard firing over before Jordan Pickford saved well from Martinelli and Merino headed wide from Kieran Tierney's cross. Liverpool will now have the opportunity to move 14 points clear at the top as the Gunners' fading title hopes suffered another blow.
GOAL rates Arsenal's players from Goodison Park…
AFPGoalkeeper & Defence
David Raya (6/10):
Made one sharp stop at his near post to deny Doucoure. Went the wrong way for the penalty.
Ben White (6/10):
Good to see him back in the XI. Got on the overlap well in the first half. Promising display before being replaced in the second half.
William Saliba (7/10):
Solid as always and you could see him looking to encourage Kiwior alongside him.
Jakub Kiwior (7/10):
Made one great block in the first half. If he is to start against Madrid, then this performance will have done him some good.
Myles Lewis-Skelly (7/10):
Really unlucky with the penalty decision, which was very harsh. Made one spectacular run in the second half before being fouled just outside the box.

Jorginho (6/10):
Looked to get things moving. Struggled when running back towards his own goal, but still so clever when he's on the ball.
Declan Rice (6/10):
Worked as hard as always, but not at his influential best.
Mikel Merino (6/10):
Survived an injury scare in the warm-up. Back in a midfield role and put in a good shift, without doing anything spectacular. Headed a good chance wide late on.

Raheem Sterling (6/10):
Struggled to beat his man at times when one on one, but kept putting himself about and set up Trossard well for his first-half goal.
Leandro Trossard (7/10):
Lovely finish to break the deadlock in the first half. Had a couple of other opportunities on the break that he could maybe have done better with.
Ethan Nwaneri (5/10):
Quiet afternoon. Unable to get himself into the game over on the right-hand side.

On at half-time for Sterling. Never really threatened.
Gabriel Martinelli (7/10):
Got the ball in some good areas and saw one good effort saved by Pickford. Lively cameo.
Jurrien Tmber (7/10):
Replaced the tiring White with half an hour remaining. Solid as always.
Martin Odgeaard (6/10):
Missed a good chance after being set-up by Tierney. Poor finish.
Kieran Tierney (7/10):
Only on for 15 minutes, but set-up good chances for Odegaard and Merino.
Mikel Arteta (6/10):
Rotated his team ahead of Madrid and gave some players some valuable minutes. Will no doubt feel aggrieved by the penalty decision.
