Matheusão confirmou a cobrança e tirou o zero do placar.

Alex Hales' strained relationship with Ben Stokes no barrier to T20 World Cup bid – Matthew Mott

Head coach tells Hales he’s starting “with a blank canvas” upon England recall

Alex Hales’ strained relationship with Ben Stokes will not throw England off course in their bid to win the T20 World Cup in Australia, according to Matthew Mott.Hales and Stokes were involved in the infamous brawl outside a Bristol nightclub in 2017 that saw Stokes charged with affray – he denied the charge and was found not guilty – and both players handed backdated bans and fines by the Cricket Disciplinary Commission. In his recently-released documentary, , Stokes refers to “my friend at the time, Alex” when addressing the incident and did not answer questions about Hales during interviews about the film.Stokes, who has been rested for England’s seven-match T20 international tour of Pakistan after a busy summer captaining the Test side, was tight-lipped when asked about his relationship with Hales and whether they had spoken recently earlier this month, saying only: “We’ve both got the same goal: to win World Cups.”Mott, England’s white-ball head coach, had not worked with Hales before his recall as an injury replacement for Jonny Bairstow for trips to Pakistan and Australia, and said that he had no concerns about the potential for friction within the squad.”They might not be best mates and that’s OK,” Mott said. “I’m sure you work with colleagues all the time who aren’t your best mate but you can work with them if you’ve got a common goal.”Ben’s come out and stated that as well. He wants to win World Cups. I’m sure Alex does as well and we all do, so we try and pick the best players and if they end up becoming good mates again that’s great; if not, as long as they’re going towards that goal of winning the World Cup together then that’s how teams function.”Related

Hales himself did not specifically address his relationship with Stokes when speaking in Karachi on Friday but was keen to insist that he was “only looking to the future” rather than dwelling on the chain of events that led to his three-year exile from international cricket.Mott also revealed that he considered “the key phone call” involved in Hales’ recall to be one he made to Trevor Bayliss. Jos Buttler made several calls to senior players after Bairstow’s injury came to light but Mott decided he should also speak to the man who was England’s coach at the time of Hales’ last-minute omission from the 2019 50-over World Cup squad after news emerged of a second failed recreational drugs test.”I rang Trevor Bayliss around the time we were considering it and asked if he had any views,” Mott said. “Obviously he was coach at the time and has worked with him at Sydney Thunder. He said he’s had absolutely no problem with him at all, he’s made mistakes but he’s trying to get better.”For me, that’s it. Nobody’s perfect – I’m certainly not – but if he’s trying to get better and he’s the best player, then we can work around it.”Like Jos said, we asked the senior players whether they had an issue. It was well before my time, so one of the things I said was ‘mate, you start with a blank canvas’. He’s been contrite and has shown he’s trying to learn from his experiences.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Caixinha was relieved of his duties after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Fluminense. The result capped off a turbulent run of results for the Portuguese tactician, who oversaw 16 matches during his Santos tenure, managing just six wins, three draws, and seven defeats, with the winter return of club icon Neymar doing little to stem the tide.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Santos held a high-level meeting on Monday, April 14, to assess possible replacements. Former Argentina and Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli quickly emerged as the frontrunner. Talks between the club and the Argentine coach are said to have gone positively, sparking optimism among fans who remember his successful first spell at Vila Belmiro.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Prior to turning their attention to Sampaoli, who coached Lionel Messi and Argentina at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Santos board explored several other prominent options. High-profile Brazilian managers such as Tite, Dorival Júnior, and Luís Castro were all approached, but each declined the opportunity to take over. With doors closing on those possibilities, Sampaoli has stepped into the spotlight as the club’s best chance to steady the ship.

  • WHAT NEXT?

CEO Pedro Martins is spearheading negotiations with the Argentine tactician, hoping to finalise an agreement swiftly with key league matches fast approaching. Sampaoli previously led Santos during the 2019 season, steering the team to a strong second-place finish in the Brazilian Championship. In 64 games in charge, he recorded 35 victories, 14 draws, and 15 losses. His side scored an impressive 102 goals while conceding 55.

Despite his on-field success, Sampaoli’s exit from the club was marred by off-field tension. A falling out with then-president José Carlos Peres led to his departure and a subsequent legal battle over unpaid dues. The court eventually ruled in Sampaoli’s favour, ordering Santos to pay R$ 4.4 million for various financial obligations.

Liverpool plot move for £50m Nunez replacement who shoots more than Salah

So, the track that FSG have chosen this winter is one that we all know and love: Liverpool are opportunistic in the transfer window, and will only act if that perfect prospect presents itself.

This might be frustrating for those of an Anfield persuasion, but there’s a reason why Liverpool have stayed ahead of the curve for the best part of a decade, probably behind only Manchester City and Real Madrid on the grand European scale.

It might not feel like it at times, but you can bet your bottom dollar that Liverpool chiefs aren’t just twiddling thumbs and spinning around ergonomic chairs, with plenty simmering behind the scenes as Arne Slot’s side chase down the Premier League title.

Liverpool managerArneSlot

We all want a shiny new signing to insinuate themself into the core of Liverpool’s first team, but sporting director Richard Hughes is currently embroiled in a fight to tie down the ‘big three’ to new contracts.

Moreover, Darwin Nunez’s future is up in the air. The likeable Uruguayan, sadly, might be moving on.

The latest on Darwin Nunez's future at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp personally advocated Nunez’s signing after he scored 34 goals from 41 matches for Benfica in 2021/22, bagging twice against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Liverpool broke their transfer record to bring him in on a £85m deal, but it hasn’t gone to plan. For all his energy and spirit, the maverick has never managed to shake the wastefulness that has marred his career on English shores, having missed 50 big chances across 80 Premier League fixtures, as per Sofascore, and scoring only 22 times.

The word on the street is that Michael Edwards has reportedly rejected a £70m verbal proposal from Al Hilal for the 25-year-old, with FSG holding out for their £85m asking price. Some might find that ludicrous – Nunez, after all, has only scored four goals from 26 matches this term – but let’s see how it pans out.

It almost feels like Nunez has regressed under Slot’s wing, that he’s lost some of his chaotic energy and been minimised into something more simplistic. It’s not working for him.

The highly-charged number nine is a fan favourite and rightly so, but Slot carries himself with a business-like ruthlessness and that is one of the defining factors behind Liverpool’s success.

Liverpool lining up exciting Nunez replacement

If Nunez does leave this month, Liverpool would be wise to secure an instant replacement. Jayden Danns, 18, is a wonderful prospect but it would be negligible to heap such a burden on his shoulders.

As such, there might be some truth in The Northern Echo’s recent report that Liverpool have identified Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo as a possible signing this month, though he is valued at £50m.

However, FSG are drawn to the idea of offering the £30m-rated Ben Doak as a makeweight, allowing them to welcome Semenyo to the fold in an affordable fashion.

The 25-year-old has been a standout figure at the Vitality Stadium this season and is also on Newcastle United’s radar. He could be the dynamic and versatile forward that the Reds need to push over the line in their title charge.

What Antoine Semenyo would bring to Liverpool

Bournemouth signed Semenyo from Bristol City for a £10.5 fee in January 2023, convinced by the electric winger’s performances in the Championship.

He sat on the fringes initially but went from strength to strength when Andoni Iraola replaced Gary O’Neil in the dugout, bagging eight Premier League goals last season and raising his game once more this term.

With six goals and three assists across 21 outings for the Cherries in 2024/25, Semenyo has the talent and the potency to make a difference in Liverpool’s squad, with his underlying data suggesting that he could actually prove to be an upgrade on Nunez.

You can see that Semenyo brings more to the table than Nunez, whose foibles have devolved into something damning. When Liverpool scouts weigh him up against Semenyo, who has been described as being “almost unplayable on his day” by reporter Ed Aarons, it’s clear that he’s in trouble.

Bournemouth’s dynamo, you see, likes to bring fire to his attacking efforts, peppering the goal with an obscene number of shots. His 4.1 strikes per game, in fact, are even more than Mohamed Salah’s 3.9 per game, so if Slot can increase his clinical edge, Liverpool might have a dangerous weapon indeed.

Analyst Ben Mattinson claimed that Semenyo would be the “perfect January signing” when discussing Arsenal’s interest, so why shouldn’t Liverpool push to sign him – especially with the Gunners in desperate need of fresh firepower?

Semenyo is simply operating at a higher level than his age-mate Nunez, and if Saudi suitors are willing to pay a big sum to take him off Liverpool’s hands, it seems like something of a no-brainer.

After all, Liverpool have skyrocketed into the ascendency under their Dutch coach’s management this term and must continue to lay down a steely framework to ensure that the mountain is crested and many more down the line.

Harry Brook brings scintillating form into Blast as Yorkshire make winning start

New Test call-up’s 60 not out off 27 balls seals win as Worcestershire fade after bright start

David Hopps25-May-2022Yorkshire 175 for 3 (Brook 60*, Lyth 40, Root 35*, Malan 33) beat Worcestershire 172 for 9 (Haynes 61, D’Oliveira 32, Thompson 3-35) by seven wicketsTwo trophyless appearances at Finals Day are the paltry sum of 20 years of T20 cricket for Yorkshire, as if somehow their illustrious history inhibits them in the shortest format of the game. You can imagine the ghost of Wilfred Rhodes emerging from behind the Howard Stand, whenever they set their minds free, chiding: “We don’t play this game for fun.” Perhaps this will be the year they put all that behind them, emerging from a troubled winter with a new outlook. A seven-wicket win with 11 balls to spare was a good way to start.Harry Brook certainly is playing it for fun, the joy he is bestowing enough to soften an old ghost’s heart. Every time he comes out to bat this season, he is living a fantasy of unimagined success. He was in ridiculous form at Headingley, as he has been all summer, transferring his prodigious Championship season – 840 runs at 140 – to the start of the Blast. His unbeaten 60 took 27 deliveries, his array of shots expertly chosen, his domination apparent from the first ball he faced.Related

Brook, Potts called up but familiar names dominate Test squad

Can the Blast still thrive in the world of the Hundred?

Worcestershire, who at one time had visions of 200-plus, were hauled back within striking range at 172 for 9. At 88 for 3 from 10.5, despite solid contributions from Adam Lyth and Dawid Malan, the game was still in doubt, but Brook and Joe Root, who astutely batted in his shadow, added 87 in 7.2 overs.Yorkshire were grateful to field a Blast XI as strong as this, even with the absence of Jonny Bairstow and David Willey on IPL duty. The presence of two England call-ups, Root and Brook, was just as it should be in the Blast, within reason; Shadab Khan was on debut; and, perhaps most hearteningly of all, Tom Kohler-Cadmore was making his first appearance of the season after a concussion suffered in pre-season.It was watched by a moderate crowd – 6,000 at most – a somewhat worrying sign for the Blast as it seeks a successful existence alongside its mouthier (and cheaper) offspring, the Hundred. Yorkshire also have their own stumbling block: six home games out of the first seven, all packed into a fortnight, and this during a cost-of-living crisis, a staggeringly incompetent fixture list which should cause those responsible to squirm with embarrassment.Jack Haynes hits inside-out over wide mid-off•PA Images/GettyWorcestershire’s chief resistance came from Brett D’Oliveira and Jack Haynes, one-time teammates at Ombersley. On an excellent batting surface, they took 70 from the powerplay and were 123 for 3 in 12 overs by the time both had departed, but they subsided tamely, suffering for the absences of their overseas duo Colin Munro and Dwayne Bravo and their captain Moeen Ali. Haynes, a player of considerable promise, has logged his first three first-class hundreds in as many weeks this season and his buoyancy could enable him to float happily through the Blast group stages.Worcestershire lost Ed Pollock early, hacking at Dom Bess, but they found momentum not just in the shape of Haynes, but also D’Oliveira. Twenty-two off the fifth over, Jordan Thompson’s first, beginning with a midwicket pull and ending with two straight hits, saw him immediately withdrawn from the attack. Root brought himself on for an over, but it was a captain’s gambit he regretted as Haynes twice deposited him over long-off in an over that cost 20. It was with relief that Root’s last ball saw the end of D’Oliveira as he drove his last ball to point (32 from 16).There was work to do for Yorkshire and the middle overs were in the hands of the spin partnership that they hope will bring them sustenance this season, Adil Rashid and Shadab (the best spin combo at Headingley since Rashid and Azeem Rafiq, and as everybody knows there hangs a tale or two).Shadab looked in trim, whereas Rashid began rustily, having had no meaningful cricket since the end of January in Bridgetown, and generally looked dissatisfied with his rhythm, but still somehow emerged with 0 for 30 from four. Yorkshire still hope he will relax his white-ball stance and play an occasional red-ball game and, on this evidence, it would benefit all parties. With no wickets from either spinner, Worcestershire held the upper hand but they declined the moment that Haynes swung Matthew Revis to deep midwicket. Haynes and D’Oliveira had gone down the ground with ease, but what followed was largely a collection of nudges and half-hits. Revis’ only two previous T20 matches had been ones of supreme inactivity, but he has had a decent Championship season and the wicket of Haynes was a good way to start. Thompson, milked earlier, returned bullishly, with two late wickets.

There was also a scintillating run-out from Haris Rauf off his own bowling. Ed Barnard’s straight drive hit the stumps, but dislodged only one bail, leaving one bail still standing, and a run out still a possibility without recourse to all the palaver off pulling up a stump. Had Rauf spotted the intricacies of a law which seems particularly anachronistic in the heat of T20? Whatever, he dashed towards mid on and flung down the stumps at high velocity.Kohler-Cadmore’s return was unrewarding as he chose to slog-sweep the first ball he faced from D’Oliveira, his fourth and was bowled. Lyth had set up the innings to good effect; Malan played a classic Malan computerised innings before casually holing out to the long side at deep midwicket with 33 from 30 and the game in the balance.Brook and Root made light of that. Brook was particularly severe on Barnard and Pat Brown, who have outdone many a T20 batter in the past. A punch over wide long-off off Barnard and uppercut against Brown over backward point were among the highlights. If Root had batted at No. 3 at Lord’s, of course, there would have been room for Brook to make his Test debut. Instead, with nine scores of fifty-plus to his name in 10 innings this season, he goes to Lord’s amid premature indications that he must await his opportunity. Not the sort of thing to chat to Root about in a match-winning T20 partnership – but certainly the sort of thing to mull over while you were watching it.

Arsenal ready to approve conditional January exit as reps travel for talks

Arsenal are ready to give the green-light for a squad member to leave the club in January as representatives travel abroad for talks, but the transfer will only be approved by Mikel Arteta’s side on one crucial condition.

Arsenal cruise to 3-0 win over Monaco in the Champions League

The north Londoners enjoyed a terrific night back in the Champions League on Wednesday, cruising to a 3-0 win over AS Monaco and ending their barren run without a goal from open play since late November.

Arsenal believe £352k-per-week striker is Arteta's "ideal" next signing

The Gunners are convinced he could “raise the team’s level”.

It was a convincing display by the Premier League title hopefuls against elite opposition, with Bukayo Saka’s brace and Kai Havertz’s neat little finish at the near post cementing a vital three points for Arsenal on Europe’s biggest stage.

Arsenal could’ve had many more, with out-of-form striker Gabriel Jesus squandering two golden chances in on goal, but it was a very positive night for Arteta who watched his side create plenty of openings against a team challenging Marseille and PSG for the Ligue 1 title right now.

That being said, Arteta sent a clear message to his players about being more clinical in front of goal.

“We have a massive responsibility,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s conversion rate.

“I cannot kick the ball but we can coach them, we can teach them and sometimes they have to take a step back as well, it’s a decision they have to take. They cannot be thinking about what they have to do, what we’ve told them as well. We try to provide the right information and right tools so they can understand the defence, understand the keeper a lot of things that we work on, and after that it’s their execution. It’s a difficult thing to do in football but they have a lot of talent to deliver that.”

Monaco had chances of their own to get on the scoresheet, but luckily for the Gunners, previously out-of-favour centre-back Jakub Kiwior slotted next to William Saliba nicely, with the home side keeping them at bay.

The Poland international has come in for Gabriel Magalhaes in recent weeks, starting against both Man United and Fulham, with Kiwior proving a very useful asset in the absence of both Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori.

Kiwior has been linked with a move to Italy regularly, and you’d think his new-found place in Arteta’s starting line-up would nullify those claims, yet reports continue to surface.

Arsenal ready to green-light January exit for Jakub Kiwor on one condition

However, despite his importance recently, Italian newspaper Il Mattino claims that Arsenal are ready to green-light a loan move for Kiwior in January – but it is conditional.

The outlet, via Calcio Napoli, writes that agents have travelled to Italy for talks this week to “lay the foundations” of a potential transfer, with Serie A title contenders Napoli looking to reinforce Antonio Conte’s backline for the second half of 24/25.

Arsenal “will say yes” to Kiwior joining Napoli on a temporary deal, but the deal must include an obligation to buy the 24-year-old outright, linked to him making a certain number of appearances under Conte.

In any case, Kiwior’s potential departure to Napoli is described as entirely plausible, and it will be interesting to see if Arsenal would sign a replacement for him in the winter.

Almiron axed for incredible £50m star in Newcastle’s dream XI after January

Newcastle United didn’t have the perfect summer transfer window by any stretch, but Eddie Howe’s success in keeping the biggest stars at St. James’ Park was as big a triumph as any incoming could have been.

But some weaknesses demand attention, to be sure. Newcastle have started the 2024/25 campaign with promise, eighth in the Premier League after 11 matches – and only one point behind third-placed Chelsea at that.

Despite lodging four official bids, the Magpies failed to convince Crystal Palace to part ways with Marc Guehi, and the central defence remains an area of concern.

Could such an issue be addressed this winter? One would think that Newcastle have the resources and PSR-related backing after operating shrewdly this summer. There was clearly more money that could have been spent, with Nottingham Forest also rejecting a £50m offer for winger Anthony Elanga toward the backend of the window.

Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga

Newcastle have a Champions League return on their mind, and to achieve this lofty goal, let’s take a look at the January moves that could enable this.

1 GK – Nick Pope

Nick Pope

Nick Pope has played every minute of Newcastle’s Premier League campaign and is starting to get back to his best. In fact, as per FBref, the 32-year-old’s 79% save success rate is bettered only by Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez (80%) and Alisson (88%) this term.

2 RB – Tino Livramento

Just brilliant. Tino Livramento is coming on leaps and bounds for the Toon this season and looks to have comprehensively displaced Kieran Trippier to the number-one spot at right-back.

He’s been called up to the England squad for the past two camps and made his debut against the Republic of Ireland on Sunday evening. The hope is that he stars at St. James’ Park for many years to come.

3 CB – Giorgio Scalvini

The first dream signing of the winter window. Newcastle probably won’t follow up their interest in Guehi after the agonising summer failure, and thus could instead turn to Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini, with ChronicleLive revealing last week that the 20-year-old is firmly on Howe’s radar.

His manager, Piero Gian Gasperini, has claimed that the Italian is “destined for greatness,” and Newcastle would only be too happy to offer up their ground as a launchpad.

4 CB – Sven Botman

Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

Hopefully, Sven Botman will be fit and thriving once again come January, with the Dutch defender touted for a winter comeback after rupturing his Achilles back in March.

At his best, Botman is one of the finest defenders in the country and could be perfect for an up-and-coming star such as Scalvini.

5 LB – Lewis Hall

Like Livramento, Lewis Hall is starting to shape into a world-beater of a prospect. Still only 20, he’s becoming a mainstay for Howe’s side and could be a prominent name for club and country for many years ahead.

6 DM – Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle resisted suitors’ efforts to sign Bruno Guimaraes this summer, and it’s a fine thing too. He’s fundamental to Howe’s system, bringing one of the most complete skillsets you’ll find across Europe.

The Brazil international is absurdly averaging 8.3 successful duels per Premier League fixture, as per Sofascore, anchoring that midfield with steel and style aplenty.

7 CM – Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for Chelsea

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall transferred to Chelsea for £30m this summer, but it hasn’t gone to plan. The former Leicester City star’s move was “one of the most pointless transfers of 2024,” according to journalist Zach Lowy.

Still, he’s a talented midfielder with a well-spread set of skills. GIVEMESPORT name Newcastle among the clubs interested in signing him on loan this January, and there’s a good chance that he’d find his feet within the talented Magpies midfield.

8 CM – Joelinton

Joelinton for Newcastle

Joelinton tends to ebb and flow a bit, but he’s playing some stellar stuff at present and brings a hulking and combative approach to his football that works well for Newcastle.

His understanding alongside compatriot Guimaraes is natural at this stage, but Dewsbury-Hall could bring the perfect style to counterbalance and complete the trio.

9 RW – Bryan Mbeumo

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are interested in signing Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo this January, with the £50m-rated Frenchman tearing it up in the Premier League this year.

Indeed, having posted eight goals and an assist across 11 outings, he’s one of the most potent threats around and would take United’s frontline to the next level, hailed for his “incredible” finishing by one Premier League commentator.

Of course, it could be a deal that spells the end of Miguel Almiron’s Tyneside career, but then it’s high time the stalwart moved on: he’s only started one Premier League match this season and a January exit looms large.

10 LW – Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon scores for Newcastle

Newcastle’s 2023/24 Player of the Season, Anthony Gordon, hasn’t quite made a rip-roaring start to the term, but he’s dangerous nonetheless.

Balanced with Mbeumo on the flanks, the Magpies could hit the level of attacking fluency that Howe has been searching for. It could be a match made in heaven.

Scouts sent to watch two Scottish sensations as Everton plot double swoop

As the international break arrives, Everton have reportedly turned their attention towards the future and landing not one but two young stars from Scotland in a double swoop.

Everton transfer news

The Toffees will welcome the international break with open arms having gone three games without victory in the Premier League after the ultimate stalemate against West Ham United. It had looked as though they finally turned a corner under Sean Dyche but recent results suggest that they’re far from out of trouble just yet, making further reinforcements all the more important.

On the transfer front, names such as Bright Osayi-Samuel and Tariq Lamptey have already been linked with a move to Goodison Park as The Friedkin Group look to make an instant impact on arrival.

Lamptey would be a particularly interesting deal. Once the next talented right-back coming through English football, Lamptey struggles to break into the Brighton & Hove Albion side these days, leaving the door ajar for an exit in 2025. In pursuit of rediscovering his form through game time, Goodison Park could be an ideal location. It’s not just current stars that the Toffees are targeting, however.

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Everton are now plotting a double swoop to sign Cole and Dylan Williams from Scottish side Airdrie after sending scouts to watch the twins in action.

Two players for the future at just 16 years old, Everton’s focus on youth should benefit them in the long term, especially as they aim to push beyond relegation scraps and gradually back towards the top half where they belong. Already named on the bench for Scottish Championship side Airdrie, the Williams twins are certainly ones to watch.

Williams twins are ones for the future

There’s plenty of famous siblings in football – be it Gary and Phil Neville or more recently Inaki and Nico Williams – and now the Williams twins may well follow in suit should they complete a move to Everton. Both midfielders, their own dream will undoubtedly be to form a partnership at the heart of a top flight side, which Everton could pave the way for.

Still incredibly young players, they will have it all to think about if the Toffees come calling. A place in the academy would likely await, of course, before a path towards the first team is formed. With Crystal Palace also reportedly interested, however, the twins could yet deal those in Merseyside the ultimate blow.

Whether it would be a good time to be joining Everton remains to be seen. When Dan Friedkin arrives, the hope will be that one of England’s oldest clubs finally climb away from relegation concerns and become a go-to side for young players once again. As things stand, however, a move to Goodison Park is one with far too many risks for one young player to complete, let alone two already making their way in senior football.
