Rawalpindi's Sadaf Hussain shines with nine-for

A round-up of the first day’s play in the third round of Division One Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches in 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Oct-2011Rawalpindi’s left-arm fast bowler Sadaf Hussain claimed an astonishing 9 for 37 in 15.4 overs to demolish Habib Bank Limited (HBL) for 114 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Hussain, 21, made best use of the conditions after Rawalpindi won the toss and seven of his wickets were either bowled or lbw. The only batsman to get away was Fahad Masood, who was dismissed by Nasir Malik. The captain Hasan Raza was HBL’s top-scorer with 29. Rawalpindi, however, also struggled when they came out to bat, ending the day on 140 for 7, leading by only 26. HBL’s new-ball attack of Masood and Sarmad Anwar took three wickets apiece. Seven Rawalpindi batsmen got into double figures but no one made more than Babar Naeem’s 32.State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) bowlers chipped away steadily to reduce Islamabad to 227 for 7 at the end of day one at the Diamond Club Ground. SBP struck two early blows after they chose to field before Islamabad had a steadying 79-run stand for the third wicket between Afaq Raheem and Zeeshan Mushtaq. After that, however, wickets fell at regular intervals and Zeeshan was the first of three successive batsmen to be dismissed on 29. Raheem remained steadfast through the day, ending on 89 not out off 228 balls. Fast bowler Saad Altaf finished with 3 for 48 for SBP.Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) were struggling at 72 for 4 against Faisalabad before Shoaib Khan snr rescued them with a century at the Iqbal Stadium. Fahad Iqbal, who scored a run-a-ball 62, sparked the revival and Shoaib joined him, making an unbeaten 116 off 99 balls with 11 fours and a six. Shoaib added 175 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper-captain Sarfraz Ahmed, who made 87, and led PIA to 352 for 6 at stumps. Abdur Rauf and Waqas Maqsood took two wickets each and had given Faisalabad a bright start before the tables were turned.Seventeen wickets fell on the first day between Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) and Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium and at the end of it ZTBL were best placed to earn a slender first-innings lead. Sialkot’s bowlers ran riot after their captain Mansoor Amjad chose to field and Mohammad Abbas dismissed five of the top six batsmen. ZTBL were floundering at 63 for 7 before Zohaib Khan made 44 and Mohammad Khalil 24 to nearly double the score. ZTBL were eventually shot out for 121 in 46 overs. Prince Abbas and Mohammad Imran shared the other five wickets between them. Sialkot’s batsmen, however, fared as badly when they came out to try and consolidate the advantage created by their bowlers. ZTBL’s new-ball attack of Sohail Tanvir and Khalil took seven wickets between them as Sialkot ended the day on 71 for 7. Mohammad Ayub was their top-scorer with 30 and they will need a lower-order resistance like ZTBL’s to avoid conceding a lead.National Bank of Pakistan’s (NBP) bowlers dismissed Abbottabad for 222 to give their team the edge on the first day at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. The new-ball pair of Mohammad Talha and Umaid Asif took three wickets apiece, while Uzair-ul-Haq and Umar Amin took two each. Though five out of the top six Abbottabad batsman got into double figures, no one made more than Hammad Ali’s 28. They would have been worse off had Khalid Usman not made an unbeaten 82 off 91 balls at No. 7. Usman eventually ran out of partners. NBP lost opener Nasir Jamshed in their reply and ended on 37 for 1 at stumps.Azhar Attari and Imran Khan claimed four Karachi Blues wickets each to help Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) dismiss the home side for 144 at the National Stadium. Karachi Blues were tottering at 70 for 6 before Tanvir Ahmed scored 44 off 54 balls to help steer them past 100. WAPDA also struggled in their innings, losing three wickets for 14 runs to be reduced to 48 for 3. They ended the day on 75 for 3 and will hope their middle-order batsmen can take a substantial lead on the second day.

Willoughby blows title race open

Charl Willoughby claimed 4 for 80 as Somerset inflicted Durham’s second Championship defeat of the season with a nine-wicket success at Taunton

24-Jul-2011
ScorecardCharl Willoughby claimed 4 for 80 as Somerset inflicted Durham’s second Championship defeat of the season with a nine-wicket success at Taunton. Resuming their second innings on 209 for 1, the visitors were bowled out for 378, Will Smith making 114 and Alfonso Thomas taking 3 for 73 in support of left-armer Willoughby, who capitalised on the overcast conditions with his ability to swing the ball..That left Somerset needing 119 to win off a minimum of 43 overs and they reached their target in the 22nd, Arul Suppiah leading the way with 66 not out. Somerset took 24 points to Durham’s four. With Lancashire and Warwickshire having won, the result threw the race for the
Championship title wide open, Durham’s lead being reduced to just five points over Lancashire and 13 over Warwickshire, who both have a game in hand.Smith and nightwatchman Mitch Claydon added 38 to Durham’s overnight score before Smith drove at a turning ball from Murali Kartik (2 for 60) and edged a catch to Marcus Trescothick at slip. He had faced 241 balls and hit 16 fours and a six. There was no sign of the collapse ahead as Durham wiped out the 260 deficit on first innings with only two wickets down. But the second new ball brought their downfall.Willoughby pinned Gordon Muchall lbw for 11 with a trademark inswinger and Claydon’s stubborn resistance ended with another leg-before verdict after he had faced 82 balls for his 38.
Dale Benkenstein had his middle stump uprooted before he had scored by a jaffa from Alfonso Thomas and suddenly the visitors were only 25 ahead with five wickets down.It was 291 for 5 at lunch and with the fifth ball after the interval Willoughby grabbed the key wicket of Paul Collingwood, lbw for 14 to a delivery he appeared to think pitched outside leg stump.
Ian Blackwell edged Thomas to Trescothick at second slip, Phil Mustard carelessly cut Willoughby straight to Nick Compton at point and Callum Thorp fell to another slip catch by James Hildreth off Thomas as Durham slumped to 330 for 9.But Steve Harmison (27) and Graham Onions (28 not out) made Somerset fight every inch of the way with a last-wicket stand of 48 that occupied ten overs and at least gave the home batsmen something to think about. Trescothick breezed to 25 before playing on to a delivery from Onions. But Suppiah played confidently to see his team to a win that puts them fourth in the
table and keeps their own hopes of a late challenge for the title alive. The opener reached his fifty with a delightful late cut for four off Blackwell, having faced 55 balls, and celebrated with a six over wide long-on next ball.

Injured Zaheer out of Sri Lanka tour

Zaheer Khan, India’s strike fast bowler, has been ruled out of the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka due to a shoulder injury

Cricinfo staff06-Jul-2010Zaheer Khan, India’s strike fast bowler, has been ruled out of the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka due to a shoulder injury. The tour includes three Tests, followed by a tri-series in Dambulla, also involving New Zealand. The BCCI, in a statement, has announced that the Karnataka fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun will replace him.Zaheer was rested for the recent tour of Zimbabwe in order to preserve himself for the busy season ahead. He participated in the Asia Cup in Dambulla and played in all four of India’s games. The BCCI did not reveal the cause of the injury or for how long he has been adviced to rest. The indication is that he will miss the Test leg of the tour, at least, as the squad for the ODI tri-series will be announced later.Zaheer however didn’t reveal much in his Twitter feed: “Shoulder is troubling me a little need to sort it out …hope to be back soon … Important season ahead …”Zaheer’s absence will come as a big blow to India, whose fast bowlers haven’t been up to the mark of late, due to injuries and loss of form. That leaves a lot of responsibility on the likes of Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth to carry the attack in Sri Lanka.Mithun has been on the fringes for the last few months after performing impressively for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy, where he was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker. He was rewarded with a call-up to the national squad for the Tests against South Africa earlier this year and an international debut in the ODIs that followed. He was withdrawn from the India A squad in England to replace the injured seamer Vinay Kumar in Zimbabwe, but didn’t get a game. He rejoined his team-mates in England for the one-dayers and in his most recent outing on Friday, taking 3 for 49 against West Indies A.The tour begins on July 18 with the first Test in Galle.

Ruthless Mumbai march into final

Saurabh Tiwary hit an enterprising fifty and Kieron Pollard played a delightful cameo to charge Mumbai to a strong 184 for 5 which proved beyond Bangalore’s reach

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outSaurabh Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu revived Mumbai with a 67-run stand•Indian Premier League

Everything changed in the last five overs of the Mumbai Indians’ innings. The game was in a deadlock at the end of 15 overs with Mumbai on 107 for 4 – some might have even felt that Royal Challengers Bangalore held the edge – but things took a dramatic turn from there on. Saurabh Tiwary hit an enterprising half-century and Kieron Pollard played a delightful cameo to charge Mumbai to 184 for 5 at the DY Patil Stadium. It was a bridge too far even for the batting-heavy Bangalore and they never really threatened to get anywhere close to the target. The 35-run win took Mumbai to the final, and sealed their qualification for the Champions League Twenty20 to be held in September. It was always going to be a difficult chase and things got really tough for Bangalore in the tenth over with the fall of Robin Uthappa and Rahul Dravid off successive deliveries. Bangalore had reached 80 for 2 from nine overs and had already lost Kevin Pietersen to a smart leg-side stumping by Ambati Rayudu off Harbhajan Singh; they then suffered the twin blows that effectively killed the contest. Uthappa was in hot form, collecting 18 runs from Harbhajan’s over with the help of two thumping sixes, but he dragged a slower one from Pollard straight to deep midwicket. Before Bangalore could recover from that asphyxiating blow, they lost Dravid, who had played a fluent knock, to a run-out resulting from a misunderstanding with Ross Taylor. Pollard removed both Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey and though Taylor hung around for a while, he couldn’t produce any miracle tonight. Bangalore were left to rue their ordinary effort in the field in the last five overs where they lost the game. The game actually changed in character twice during Mumbai’s innings: first after the first time-out was taken at the end of seven overs, and second from the 15th over onwards. Mumbai had recovered after the early fall of Sachin Tendulkar, courtesy an impish knock from Rayudu who counter-attacked initially before settling down, to reach 62 for 2 in seven overs, but were gradually choked by the slower bowlers. In the next six overs, before the second time-out was taken, only 31 runs came with the addition of two wickets.Things looked desperate for Mumbai but Tiwary looted 17 runs from the 16th over bowled by Jacques Kallis to turn things around. The first delivery, a slower one, was swung over the midwicket boundary; the fourth was bludgeoned to midwicket for a four; and the fifth ran away to fine-leg boundary via an inside-edge. Mumbai had broken free and continued to indulge themselves in the end overs.Anil Kumble, who, before then, had combined well with Pietersen, handed back the initiative as he conceded 17 runs in the 17th over. It was Tiwary, again, who did the damage. He made use of a freehit to collect a boundary to backward square-leg before flat-batting a six to the straight boundary, as Kumble’s visage grew angrier. It was the image of the night.Pollard joined in the fun right in the end, with his big lofted drives, to further boost Mumbai. Pollard pinged the long-off boundary with two sixes against Vinay Kumar and slugged Dale Steyn over long-on for another six as Mumbai finished off in style. And so, after 41 days of non-stop action, Mumbai entered their first final in the three years of IPL.

Konstas, Harris and Smith miss out as O'Neill and Starc shine

The second day saw 15 wickets fall on a pitch aiding the quicks as Australia’s Test opening debate continued to rage

Alex Malcolm21-Oct-2024Australia’s next Test opener is yet to announce himself after Sam Konstas and Marcus Harris both missed out on an action-packed second day at the MCG where Steven Smith also fell cheaply as Fergus O’Neill and Mitchell Starc ran riot with the ball but Victoria claimed a significant lead over New South Wales. As two of Australia’s selectors, coach Andrew McDonald and Tony Dodemaide, watched from the stands Konstas and Harris failed to elevate their case while Smith also fell for 3 for 29 balls as O’Neill, who is in the Australia A squad, bagged four wickets in a skillful display of seam bowling in friendly conditions. Starc then tore through Victoria’s top order late in the day with a blistering spell that claimed three scalps, including Harris caught down the leg side for the second time in the match.Related

It came on a day where openers around the country struggled with Matt Renshaw (2) and Cameron Bancroft (8) also falling cheaply. After Victoria were bowled out for 272, all eyes were on the battle between Konstas and Australia’s back-up Test quick Scott Boland in the morning and the latter held sway, albeit with some help from umpire Sam Nogajski. Boland delivered 10 balls at Konstas who scarcely laid bat on him. The 19-year-old was nearly bowled first ball, hit on the inner thigh pad and got a thick inside edge on one that flew in the air past the diving short leg for his only two runs.Boland then nipped one back from a fuller length to hit Konstas below the knee roll and Nogajski adjudged him lbw. Replays suggested it may have been doing too much to hit leg stump.O’Neill and Will Sutherland then tightened the screws with some frugal bowling as the prodigious movement in the MCG surface never abated at any stage throughout the day.O’Neill was a little fortunate to claim Smith, who tickled a glance down the leg side to Sam Harper. But it was reward for outstanding control as Smith scored just three runs from 29 deliveries.Josh Philippe took a brilliant leg-side catch to remove Marcus Harris•Getty Images

Nic Maddinson had earlier nicked one trying to punch Sutherland forcefully off the back foot before O’Neill found the outside edge of Moises Henriques to leave NSW reeling at 28 for 4.Ollie Davies and Josh Philippe shared a steadying partnership and both looked comfortable at various stages driving impressively down the ground whenever a rare overpitched delivery was offered. But Davies got sucked into a short ball plan from Sutherland and holed out hooking to deep square for 37. Sean Abbott fell in exactly the same way two overs later to leave the Blues 83 for 6. Philippe tried to shepherd the tail with an unbeaten 45 and did get a contribution of 17 from Nathan Lyon but O’Neill and Todd Murphy cleaned up the last four to bowl NSW out for 136 and hand the home side a significant 136-run lead.Starc ensured that Victoria did not build on that advantage easily with a sparkling spell of fast bowling. Backing up after some excellent work on day one he tore through Victoria’s top order. The second ball of the innings was a vicious off-cutter that leapt at Ash Chandrasinghe and ricocheted off his back elbow onto the stumps. In the third over he pinned Campbell Kellaway lbw with a delivery that was full and too fast for the left-hander.Peter Handscomb fell edging Jackson Bird to second slip before Starc claimed Harris again in his fifth over of the spell. Just like the first innings, a quick rising delivery at the hip caused Harris to glance without control, it came off glove onto thigh pad and ballooned behind for Philippe to pouch at full stretch in the right glove. It left Harris with scores of 26 and 16 for the match and Victoria struggling at 32 for 4. But Harper and Tom Rogers steadied late in the day to help reclaim control for the home side extend the lead beyond 200.

Matthew Revis takes five as Yorkshire sniff innings victory over Glamorgan

21-year-old registers maiden five-wicket haul as Yorkshire to enforce the follow-on

ECB Reporters Network12-Sep-2023Glamorgan 273 (Carlson 64, Revis 5-50) and 120 for 2 fo (Byrom 52*, Northeast 45*) trail Yorkshire 500 (Masood 192, Bean 93, Hill 71) by 107 runsMatthew Revis delivered career-best bowling figures of 5-50 to force Glamorgan to follow on at Sophia Gardens as he helped Yorkshire move into a winning position on day three of their LV= County Championship clash.Chasing back-to-back wins after their recent triumph against Derbyshire, Yorkshire dismissed the Welsh county for 273 in their first innings as they chased a total of 500. That left them trailing by 227, forcing them to bat again. When play ended five overs short due to bad light, Eddie Byrom and Sam Northeast had put on 90 for the third wicket to take the home side to 120-2.The 21-year-old Revis had picked up three wickets the previous evening and was quickly into action again at the start of a rain-affected morning session. He had Kiran Carlson caught at short leg by James Wharton for 64 to end a promising sixth wicket stand of 73 with Dan Douthwaite. He then clean bowled the home side’s second-highest scorer, Andy Gorvin (47), who had been joined by No.11 Jamie McIlroy in a tail waging session that plundered 56 very welcome runs.Glamorgan reached 213 for 7 by lunch, but seven balls into the afternoon session Ben Coad trapped dangerman Douthwaite lbw for 37 and followed that up by clean bowling James Harris with his next ball. McIlroy denied him a hat-trick and went on to score an unbeaten 30.Yorkshire skipper Shan Masood had no hesitation in asking Glamorgan to follow on and Coad struck with only his second ball of the innings to remove Zain ul-Hassan. It was the second time in the match the opener had fallen to the Yorkshire paceman, this time caught at first slip by George Hill.Colin Ingram then fell to a catch at first slip off Dom Bess to make it 30 for 2 in the 13th over and the second innings slide seemed to be on. It was 35 for 2 at the tea interval before openerEddie Byrom and Sam Northeast finally got to grips with the bowling. Byrom scored 40 in the first innings and this time around successfully reached his half-century with a streaky two between the wicketkeeper and slip off Adam Lyth in the 36th over.By the end of play, their third wicket stand – Northeast is unbeaten on 45 – had been worth 90 and carried Glamorgan to within 107 runs of avoiding an innings defeat.

Neil Wagner joins Somerset for Championship run-in

Worcestershire bring in Netherlands allrounder Logan van Beek

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Aug-2023Somerset have signed New Zealand bowler Neil Wagner for the final three rounds of the LV= Insurance County Championship.Wagner had been due to play for Yorkshire this summer but suffered a torn hamstring and a bulging disc in his back while playing a Test against Sri Lanka in March. He has previously turned out for Essex, Lancashire and Northamptonshire in county cricket.Somerset had enjoyed the services of Matt Henry and Peter Siddle as overseas players during the first half of the season but both have now finished their spells at the club.”We have been working extremely hard to secure the services of a quality international bowler for the last three red-ball fixtures of the season,” Somerset’s director of cricket, Andy Hurry, said. “Neil is a proven performer at the very highest level and has vast experience as well as a thorough understanding of Championship cricket.”He is a real competitor, and alongside our other highly rated bowlers, we believe we have the capability to consistently take 20 wickets as we enter the final phase of the Championship season.”Somerset are currently fifth in Division One of the Championship, with Wagner set to be available for their trip to Southampton on September 3.Wagner said: “I’m looking forward to joining up with Somerset and hopefully I can help them finish the season strongly. I’ve played English county cricket before and it’s something that I really enjoy. Division One is very competitive again this year and there are no easy games, but I’ll be doing everything that I can to make sure that Somerset finish as close to the top of the table as possible.”Elsewhere, Worcestershire have signed Netherlands allrounder Logan van Beek for the rest of the Metro Bank Cup campaign, as well as two rounds of the Championship.Van Beek, who spent three seasons at Derbyshire between 2019 and 2021, will be involved in five One-Day Cup games, starting with Gloucestershire’s visit to New Road, and Championship fixtures against Glamorgan and Durham before joining up with Netherlands for their World Cup preparations.Worcestershire have also announced that Ethan Brookes, 22, will join them on a two-year contract. The Warwickshire allrounder, brother of Henry, has played three first-class games and 18 List A games after coming through the Edgbaston academy.

BCB to enforce strict bio-bubble measures for Australia's visit

The travelling party will have their passports processed separately, and will not face immigration authorities

Mohammad Isam22-Jun-2021The Australian men’s team will have heightened bio-bubble measures on their tour to Bangladesh next month. The visitors are likely to touch down on July 29 to play five T20Is against Bangladesh in early August, with all matches being held in Dhaka as per the agreement between the two boards. The measures will start as soon as the Australians land at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. As Cricket Australia (CA) informed the BCB that they didn’t want the players to be in a hallroom inside the airport, the traveling party will have their passports processed separately, and they will not be facing the immigration authorities,.”The proper procedure of immigration and passport control will take place in the airport by following Covid-19 compliance measures,” Jalal Yunus, the BCB media committee chairman, said. “Maybe this would include their passport being processed separately, but it is what is usually done. They informed us that they don’t want to enter a hallroom for the immigration. The passports will be returned to them following the immigration formalities.”There will also be tighter protocols in the hotel where both teams will be staying. The BCB is using the Pan Pacific Sonargaon in midtown Dhaka, where both West Indies and Sri Lanka stayed during their tours this year.”It is the same bio-bubble that we had for West Indies and Sri Lanka,” Yunus said. “(CA) asked us to address certain pockets in the hotel where outsiders were allowed, like some of the restaurants. Those will be closed during the course of the Australia tour.”The BCB is also complying with the CA’s request to keep all five T20Is at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. The BCB has created bio-bubbles of varying sizes, since competitive cricket resumed in Bangladesh in October 2020. After seeing how Bangladesh hosted their two domestic tournaments, West Indies were impressed with their bio-bubble measures. The two tours, by West Indies and Sri Lanka, were held in Dhaka and Chattogram.Sri Lanka, who came in May, had a bit of a scare ahead of the first ODI against Bangladesh but out of the three positive cases, two turned out to be false with only one player being diagnosed with Covid-19.The BCB is currently holding the Dhaka Premier League T20s with a bio-bubble for all 12 teams and match officials staying in three separate hotels. The tournament hasn’t had too many issues, with only a few days remaining for its conclusion.Australia meanwhile will be traveling to Dhaka directly from the West Indies after their white-ball tour. This will be Australia’s first visit to Bangladesh since their 2017 tour to play two Tests.

Ellyse Perry plunders 59-ball hundred on return to the top

The allrounder secured victory and reached her century with the final hit of the match

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2018Ellyse Perry thumped a 59-ball hundred on the ground where she struck a Test double-century a year ago in a fantastic display of striking for Sydney Sixers in the WBBL at North Sydney Oval. After a wide from Heather Graham brought the scores level, Perry crunched the next delivery straight down the ground to bring up three figures.Perry had been moved down Australia’s T20 batting order at the recent World T20 in the Caribbean amid concerns about her strike-rate and the fact the team had so many top-order options. But given the chance to open the innings in the WBBL, alongside Alyssa Healy who was bowled for 2, Perry grabbed her opportunity with a display of wonderful clean hitting that included 14 fours and two sixes.Perry’s hundred was the second of this season’s WBBL following Lizelle Lee’s on the opening weekend of the competition.
