Bowlers won it for us – Misbah

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq credited his bowlers, who sparked a dramatic New Zealand collapse in the evening session to seal his team’s crushing win. Abdur Rehman and Wahab Riaz began the demolition, picking up three wickets apiece, while Umar Gul came in to blast out the tail as the hosts were rolled for 110. New Zealand lost all ten wickets for 77 runs in the final session of play, bringing a premature end to a Test match that had promised a closely-fought contest at stumps on the previous day.”We didn’t feel like we were going to win today because the wicket was a bit flat and a bit slow,” Misbah said. “It wasn’t easy to get batsmen out here, but I think the bowlers did a fantastic job and they won the match for us today. They stuck to the job and did very well for the team.”He said the aim for the Pakistan bowlers had been to keep a good line and length and limit scoring opportunities. “The pitch is slow so it’s not easy to score runs. The way I batted, I felt that it was a really tough wicket to score runs on. Batsmen get frustrated when they get stuck there and have to face a lot of deliveries without scoring many runs.”So that was the key, to bowl in the right areas and just keep the batsmen frustrated and they are going to make mistakes.”Misbah also praised his batsmen for sticking to their plans, as they attempted to bat time and accumulate steadily. “We batted well. Our plan was to bat a bit longer and we wanted a bigger lead, because it looked like batting in the fourth innings was going to be trouble on this wicket.”Misbah put New Zealand’s woeful collapse in the second innings down to inexperience and lack of patience, while affirming his side’s efforts in the field. “I think that most batsmen are not used to these kinds of wickets where run-scoring is really difficult. You have to be a bit patient. As a batsman you feel under pressure when there are maiden overs and dot balls and you do make mistakes. We bowled and fielded well, and a 92-run lead would have been another thing on the batsmen’s mind. I think all these things came together and we were able to get through.”

Maguire: Newcastle takeover investigation

Finance expert Kieran Maguire has given his reaction to some news that he has now heard from Newcastle United involving their takeover.

The Lowdown: Takeover investigation

As per The Times, a law firm run by interim Premier League chair Peter McCormick conducted preliminary checks on the Saudi-backed takeover at St. James’ Park last year.

This has led to some teams in the top flight accusing the division’s decision-makers of having a vested interest, with implications of impartiality.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to The Times, the FA board is now set to investigate McCormick’s alleged conflict of interest.

This follows calls of potentially introducing an independent regulator for football by the government, after controversies surrounding the Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) takeover.

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire, a Sky Sports pundit and expert in football finances, has now given his reaction to the news of the investigation, claiming that while the North East club have ‘nothing to worry about’, it does look ’embarrassing’ for them after wrapping up the deal:

“There’s nothing to worry about for Newcastle because they have done nothing wrong.

“But it does look embarrassing if this investigation goes ahead. You can understand the optics of it in that respect.

“The club has, however, been completely vindicated in their eyes and indeed in their fans’ eyes with regards to the PIF takeover.”

The Verdict: Move on

The takeover is a done deal, and whatever disagreements and conflicts remain surrounding it, football simply has to move on.

The investigation can be launched, but as Maguire claims, they will likely find nothing that the Tyneside outfit have done wrong with regards to the takeover, and so it just seems a frustrating waste of time.

Nonetheless, introducing an independent regulator should remove all controversies for future takeovers of football clubs, but for now the Toon Army should be allowed to look forward to what lies ahead for them.

Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan make it two in two

A round-up of the seventh day of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Twenty20 tournament

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2010North ZoneDelhi made it two in two, beating Jammu and Kashmir by 19 runs at the Model Sports Complex. Opener Chetan Sharma top scored with 47, an innings laced with five fours and a six, and was supported by Rajat Bhatia in a 56-run stand for the third wicket. However, the J&K bowlers, led by medium-pacer Raman Dutta (3-28) and captain Abid Nabi (2-21), struck back to keep Delhi down to a chaseable 142. J&K appeared to begin in encouraging fashion, with the openers adding 25, but things soon began to worsen. Medium-pacer Kapil Yadav made inroads to reduce J&K to 35 for 5 at one stage and had it not been for Javed Ahmed’s 47, his team would have struggled to get past three-figures. They had to eventually settle for 123 for 9, with Yadav taking 4-15 in only his second Twenty20 game.Hemang Badani’s 42 off 30 deliveries took Haryana to a six-wicket victory against Services in Delhi•Hamish Blair/Getty Images

Punjab held their nerve to prevail over Himachal Pradesh in a thrilling finish at the Model Sports Complex in Delhi. Set a target of 129, they were bolstered by a strong opening stand of 41. However, Punjab experienced a scare when Karan Goel and Ravi Inder Singh fell in a space of three deliveries with the score on 77. When Rahul Sharma fell, the fourth wicket with 95 on the board, 34 were needed off four overs. It was Mandeep Singh who stepped up and guided his team to a nerve-wracking win, scoring a boundary off the final delivery of the game off which a single was needed. He remained unbeaten on 33 and was supported by Bipul Sharma, who made a run-a-ball 8. Earlier, VA Indulkar had provided some impetus to the Himachal innings with 41 but it proved inadequate.A half-century by Dhruv Singh who received support in a 68-run stand from Hemang Badani helped Haryana to a six-wicket win over Services at the Model Sports Complex in Delhi. In their chase of 133, Haryana were struggling at 32 for 3 but Badani, whose aggressive approach took the pressure off Dhruv, put his team back on track. He struck four fours and a six in his 42 while Dhruv held firm at the other end and eventually saw Haryana through. A three-wicket haul from left-arm seamer Sanjay Budhwar had restricted Services, though captain Yashpal Singh had set up a competitive score with 54.Central ZoneDishant Yagnik’s half-century and some disciplined bowling took Rajasthan to a 16-run win against Uttar Pradesh at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Yagnik hammered six fours and two sixes in his 54 off 40 deliveries after his opening partner Aakash Chopra was run out for 22. However, Sudeep Tyagi and Ali Murtuza struck to reduce Rajasthan to 100 for 5 from 97 for 1. Vineet Saxena slammed an unbeaten 39 off 27 to help his team to a competitive 155 for 7. Medium-pacer Afroz Khan then picked up 3 for 28 as none of the Uttar Pradesh batsmen could score quickly enough to pose a threat to Rajasthan. Uttar Pradesh finished on 139 for 6, Ravikant Shukla top scored with 35 off 32.Railways scraped to a one-wicket win off the last ball against Vidarbha at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Chasing Vidarbha’s 155, Railways were given a rollicking start by PM Madkaikar, who hammered 27 off 14 deliveries as his side raced to 51 without loss in the fifth over. However, Vidarbha led by offspinner Akshay Wakhare hit back to leave Railways tottering at 89 for 6. Karan Sharma slammed 30 off 15 to bring his side back on track, and captain Murali Kartik held his nerve as Railways scampered home. Himanshu Joshi’s 64 off 43 had earlier set up Vidarbha, but his dismissal off JP Yadav in the 19th over meant they managed only 13 off the last 10 deliveries, which made all the difference in the end. Yadav finished with 3 for 21.East ZoneOrissa’s bowlers led by offspinner Rakesh Mohanty defended a modest target of 130 at the Sunshine Ground in Cuttack, dismissing Assam for 107. Mohanty took 3 for 18 after medium-pacer Santosh Jena had struck twice in three balls to reduce Assam to 10 for 2. Gokul Sharma resisted with an unbeaten 31 off 20 deliveries, but ran out of partners as wickets fell regularly. Mohanty and Niranjan Behera had earlier helped Orissa to 129 for 7, after offspinner Gokul and fast bowler Dhiraj Goswami had taken two wickets apiece to reduce them to 69 for 6 in 12 overs.Legspinner Subal Chowdhury’s 3 for 19 set up a comfortable six-wicket victory for Tripura against Jharkhand at the Ravenshaw College Ground in Cuttack. Jharkhand were dismissed for a paltry 96, which Tripura chased down with 13 deliveries to spare. Put into bat, Jharkhand had begun well, reaching 40 without loss in the seventh over. However, Rameez Nemat’s run-out triggered a collapse, and Chowdhury snapped up three wickets to leave Jharkhand struggling at 48 for 5. Keshav Kumar and Shahbaz Nadeem took the score to 81, but Jharkhand again lost wickets in a heap to be dismissed for 96. Tripura’s batsmen knocked off the runs without much fuss.West ZoneAbhishek Nayar’s half-century led Mumbai to a five-wicket victory against Gujarat at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara. Opening the innings, Nayar smashed four sixes and as many fours in his 57 off 43 deliveries, as Mumbai reached the target of 146 with an over to spare. Mumbai were in some trouble at one stage as they slid to 115 for 5, but Siddharth Chitnis came in at No. 7 and hammered three sixes in his unbeaten 27 off 11 to settle the matter in Mumbai’s favour. Niraj Patel’s unbeaten 41 had earlier helped Gujarat to post 145 for 5. Several Gujarat batsmen got starts but fell without making substantial contributions.Samad Fallah inspired Maharashtra to a 14-run win over Saurashtra in a low-scoring encounter at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara.Saurashtra, led by Jaidev Unadkat, skittled the defending champions for 81, but left-arm medium pacer Fallah struck early and often to reduce Saurashtra to 3 for 14 in the fifth over, taking the prize wicket of India Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, trapped leg before for one, in the process.Pratik Mehta led Saurashtra’s fightback, making 28 from 32, the highest score of the match, but it was not enough as he got no support from anyone else; only two other Saurashtra batsman got into double figures, while there were six scores of 2 or less. Fallah finished with sparkling figures of 3 for 7 from his four overs, and was ably backed up by the other Maharastra bowlers, all whom took at least one wicket.

Newcastle eyeing £109m French duo

A big claim has been made on Newcastle United and their transfer plans…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Santi Aouna, along with fellow reporter Dahbia Hattabi, has revealed two players that the club are looking to snap up at the end of the season as PIF attempt to bolster Eddie Howe’s Premier League squad.

Aouna Tweeted: “Info with @DahbiaHattabi: Newcastle wants to recruit two French people next summer: Benoît Badiashile, whose price set by Monaco is around €40m. Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen.”

St James’ supporters will be delighted

The St. James’ Park faithful will surely be delighted with this news as both players would be fantastic additions to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Badiashile is worth roughly £34m – according to Aouna – and Diaby is reportedly valued at £75m by his current club Bayer Leverkusen. This means that the pair could cost as much as £109m to sign this summer, although PIF could work their magic and negotiate more favourable deals to make them both viable targets instead of potentially obliterating the budget on two players.

Diaby, 22, has been sublime in the Bundesliga this season and would add an extra level of attacking threat to Howe’s team. He has produced 12 goals and nine assists in the division as he has been able to show that he can consistently deliver at the top end of the pitch.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League has six goals and their top assister has set up four strikes so far. The Frenchman would, therefore, be an upgrade on what Howe currently has to work with in terms of scoring and creating goals.

Badiashile would also be a top signing as he would bolster the centre-back options at the club. The 21-year-old has averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 6.91 across 20 appearances in Ligue 1 as he has shown that he can put in excellent displays on a regular basis despite his young age.

His experience, and performances, at this stage in his career also suggest that he has the scope to develop further and improve as a player in the years to come. This means that Newcastle would be signing a player with potential as well as someone who can make an impact in the immediate future, which is also the case with 22-year-old Diaby.

Therefore, the supporters will be delighted with the club’s interest in both of these players and they will surely be hoping that PIF can get both of them over the line.

Newcastle must brutally drop Joelinton

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United will be looking to seal their fourth straight win in the Premier League as they face Norwich at Carrow Road today.

The Magpies come into the match off the back of three wins in succession, against Crystal Palace, Leicester and Wolves, and are currently 12 points clear of the relegation zone.

They come up against a Norwich team sitting bottom of the table and 19 points behind the Toon army as it stands and Howe’s men have a terrific chance to move further clear of 18th-placed Burnley.

The head coach may decide to make a few changes to his side to keep things fresh after the match against Palace in midweek and one player who must be brutally axed from the XI is central midfielder Joelinton.

His revival under Howe has been spectacular and he deserves immense credit for the way he has turned his career at St. James’ Park around. He has gone from being a goal-shy striker who was not justifying his £40m price tag to being a combative, energetic, ball-winning, midfield player.

However, he has not been himself in recent weeks after returning from illness. He was out with an ailment in the early parts of March and has averaged a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.42 in the five games he has played since coming back into the side against Everton.

This comes after he averaged SofaScore ratings of 7.3 and 7.1 in January and February respectively and shows that his form has fallen off a cliff since his fitness issues. He was previously accused of “looking lost” on the pitch by Dion Dublin and his statistics suggest that he is in that position again as he has been struggling badly.

Danny Murphy once dubbed his lapse play in possession as “unacceptable” and those concerns have cropped up again in recent matches. In his last five games, he has lost the ball 48 times and lost 44 of his 68 duels as he failed to demonstrate his quality in the middle of the park.

Therefore, the £80k-per-week passenger must finally be axed from the team after five below-par outings. His performances suggest that he is not 100% after his illness last month and Howe must now give him the time he needs to get back to his best so that he can then return to the team and put in the lung-busting, combative, displays that the fans love to see from him.
