MCC and Chance to Shine launch anti-bullying drive

MCC and the Chance to Shine charity have combined in a nationwide campaign to arrest an “alarming trend” of physical and mental bullying in sport.

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Apr-2012MCC and the Chance to Shine charity have combined in a nationwide campaign to arrest what John Stephenson, MCC’s head of cricket, has called an “alarming trend” of physical and mental bullying in sport.Chance to Shine, which seeks to promote cricket in state schools, will send coaches into the state sector to promote good sportsmanship for around half a million children in 4,000 schools.Research published by Chance to Shine to coincide with the end of the Easter holidays suggests children as young as eight-years-old are victims of mental and physical bullying on the school playing field.Two-thirds (66%) of parents of children aged eight to 16 polled said they had seen different forms of mental intimidation while watching their children play sport. Teasing (43%), swearing (40%), taunts (34%) and verbal threats (16%) were all cited. Most disturbingly, 42% of parents said that their child lost confidence after being bullied on the playing field, with half of that group showing reluctance to take further part as a result.A separate survey of 1,250 schoolchildren suggested that parents were not being over-protective. More than half reported verbal abuse during school matches and a quarter of children said they had seen a team-mate deliberately tripped, kicked or pushed over.Stephenson said: “The results from the survey highlight an alarming trend in school sport, which needs to be proactively addressed. MCC’s ongoing partnership with Chance to Shine provides the perfect vehicle to do this, as children get the opportunity to learn about the MCC Spirit of Cricket principles of playing hard, but fair.”Wasim Khan, the chief executive of Chance to Shine, said: “It is worrying to hear that this kind of psychological warfare is being waged on our school playing fields. We are teaching children from a young age to play competitively, but to respect the opposition as well as their team-mates. We need to stamp out this bullying in school sport.”

Gayle, WICB reach agreement on return

Chris Gayle and the WICB have reached an understanding that paves the way for the former West Indies captain to return to the national team as early as the upcoming tour of England, Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) has reported

Chris Gayle could return to the national team as early as the upcoming tour of England, but the deal’s success will be tested by an ongoing lawsuit•AFP

Chris Gayle and the WICB have reached an understanding that paves the way for the former West Indies captain to return to the national team as early as the upcoming tour of England, Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) has reported. However, the deal’s success will be tested by an ongoing lawsuit – to which Gayle is a party – between the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) and the board. Gayle hasn’t played for West Indies since the 2011 World Cup.The agreement between Gayle and the WICB was brokered by CARICOM (the Caribbean Community) and had the involvement of St Vincent Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves. According to the report, a meeting will be convened between the two parties to “tidy up residual matters” after both parties expressed regret for their actions. “In the light of all of this, the WICB and Mr Gayle agree that the way is now clear for his active return to West Indies cricket, subject to all necessary fitness considerations,” the report quoted from the agreement. “A date is to be set for this meeting, convenient to all parties, including Mr Gayle who is currently in India,” Baldwin Spencer, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, and the chairman of the Prime Ministerial sub-committee of cricket was quoted as saying.Gayle has reportedly said he will be unavailable for West Indies duty for the entire duration of the IPL, which ends on May 27. West Indies are due to tour England for a full series between May 5 and June 24 and Gayle’s participation in the IPL means he will miss the Test series. However, he was prepared to forego his contract with Somerset and play for West Indies in the one-day and Twenty20 games on that tour. He also said he was available for the World Twenty20 this year and that he was not seeking to “cherry pick” the series he played. In a statement dated March 29, the board said it was “disappointed” over Gayle’s unavailability during the IPL but in the “spirit of compromise and subject to agreement being reached on all outstanding residual matters” it would convey Gayle’s unavailability to the selectors. The board hoped Gayle would drop the lawsuit concerning No-Objection Certificates filed by the WIPA against it, though Gayle, in a statement last week, said he could not “possibly contemplate withdrawing unilaterally from proceedings”, especially when such a move would affect all West Indies players. The board, though, has since written to Prime Minister Gonsalves, arguing that Gayle’s participation in the lawsuit was not consistent with the agreement reached with the board. It also questioned why Gayle could not withdraw from the lawsuit unilaterally. “As the lawsuit was started by WIPA without him, and his claims are set out separately, we do not understand why Mr Gayle says he cannot contemplate withdrawing from the lawsuit without WIPA.”Our efforts must surely be focussed on bringing about the resolution of all outstanding matters between the Board and Mr Gayle.”

Ponting dropped from ODI squad

Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, has been dropped from the ODI squad for the remainder of the triangular series following the worst batting slump of his limited overs career

Ricky Ponting knew the final phone call was imminent. Dropped from the Australia ODI squad for the remainder of the triangular series following the worst batting slump of his limited-overs career, Ponting accepted his fate after reaching an agreement with the national selector John Inverarity that one or the other would have to make the call.Under their terms, either Ponting would contact Inverarity to notify the selectors of his retirement from ODIs, or Inverarity would do likewise to inform Ponting he had lost his place. Scores of 2, 1, 6, 2 and 7 moved Inverarity to dial first, drawing the curtain on Ponting’s time as an ODI batsman. In a 375-game one-day international career, never before had he made five single-figure scores in a row. Twenty-six battling balls in Brisbane sealed the panel’s verdict.”Ricky and I were always clear on this, that at some stage he’d either come to me or I’d have the responsibility of going to him,” Inverarity told ESPNcricinfo. “That’s always the case with all players, isn’t it. It’s either they come to the selectors or the selectors come to the player. Ricky in the ODIs there’s been a form lapse there, yesterday he wasn’t in good form and in the five games he’s made very few runs.”Inverarity said that while Ponting would be missed, not least as a leader who had just stood-in for the injured Michael Clarke, the time had come to move on in the 50-over format.”The team will not seem the same without him, but moving on from the omission of players who have been outstanding over a long period of time is the nature of elite sport,” Inverarity said. “Ricky’s record speaks for itself. He is one of the truly great performers in the history of Australian ODI cricket, with his reputation enhanced further by him captaining Australia to two World Cup victories.”Ricky’s contribution goes far beyond his batting statistics and his brilliant fielding. The example he sets in every respect and his extraordinarily positive influence in the dressing-room is acknowledged by all. He is held in the highest possible regard by his team-mates and there is no higher accolade than this. Ricky being prepared to take over the captaincy in Michael Clarke’s recent absence for the sake of the team is yet another example of his selfless attitude and team-first focus.”Australia ODI squad

Like Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh before him, Ponting was not given the chance to choose when he would end his ODI career. As late as Sunday night in Brisbane following Australia’s win in Brisbane, Ponting said he had no intention of stepping aside, and had left his future in the hands of the selectors. Inverarity countered suggestions that Ponting might have been given a farewell match with the stark realities of professional sport.”Ricky Ponting has been dropped from the ODI side and the national selection panel has spoken about moving towards the 2015 World Cup,” he said. “The door is never closed on anybody, but it’s a strong indication there. We were very keen for Ricky to play in these games because we intended to blend in some younger players, and his influence for them has been remarkable. But we need to at some stage move on.”We’re not ruling him out because one never knows what’s around the corner … but we’ve certainly got 2015 in mind, and we knew at the beginning of the series when we wanted those young players to be blended in, in the presence of Ricky.”In elite sport there’s no place for sentiment. There are always the two schools of thought, going out on your own terms and that, and the members of the national selection panel were unanimous in their view. It was discussed by email last night, a few calls last night and was confirmed this morning. That’s the decision and that’s elite sport.”Ponting has been replaced in the squad by the allrounder and vice-captain Shane Watson, who proved his fitness after a stubborn calf injury by playing for New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia in Perth. Inverarity announced one other change to the squad, recalling Ryan Harris in place of Mitchell Starc. He also confirmed that Matthew Wade had now usurped Brad Haddin as the No. 1 wicketkeeper in limited-overs matches, and that the panel intended to take both glovemen to the West Indies.”Ryan Harris has been re-included in the squad with Mitchell Starc making way for his return. Mitchell will benefit greatly from the Tests and the ODIs he has played,” Inverarity said. “His development as a player of the future is most encouraging. Shane Watson also comes back into the squad. He is an all-rounder of proven class and the NSP is keen to have him re-join the squad.”The NSP made the decision that Matthew Wade is now the preferred ODI wicket-keeper for the Australian ODI team. The intention at this stage is to have both Matthew and Brad Haddin in the West Indies together for the duration of the tour.”

We play good, fair cricket – Misbah

Misbah-ul-Haq, successor as Pakistan captain to the disgraced Salman Butt, has appealed to England to forget the spot-fixing scandal that has blighted his country’s cricketing reputation and expressed confidence that there is no chance of a repeat.Pakistan and England meet for the first time in 17 months since a plot by Butt and the two Pakistan fast bowlers, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, to bowl deliberate no-balls for financial gain were uncovered in a sting operation by the now defunct tabloid, the .The players were banned by the ICC and three months ago received lengthy jail sentences at Southwark Crown, leaving Pakistan and England to approach a three-Test series in the UAE fearing lingering resentment.Misbah, flanked by Pakistan’s team manager Naveed Akram Cheema at an arrival media conference at the ICC offices in Dubai, asked England to give Pakistan a fair chance to recover their reputation.”I think both teams know we just have to forget the past,” he said. “Our area of concern is to play good cricket, fair cricket – and that’s what we can do. In a year and a half, our performances show that – the way we are behaving on the field, the way we are conducting ourselves.”Credit goes to the team and all the players after a difficult time – everybody just stuck to the task, gathered their thoughts and just wanted to prove to the world that we were good players and a good team. Our target is just to play cricket in the true spirit. We want good relations, and to play really good and hard cricket.”Cheema was also adamant that Pakistan have put their house in order. “The Pakistan Cricket Board has introduced a code of conduct – an anti-corruption code – and all these guys have been told. We are following this code in letter and spirit. I think with those rules and regulations in place, the chances [of spot fixing] happening again are not there. I’m absolutely confident about that.”Some England observers have looked askance at Pakistan’s selection of Wahab Riaz, who was omitted while legal proceedings took place against his former team-mates, but who has now been recalled.”As far as Wahab was concerned, I think all those who were involved in the unfortunate incident have been imprisoned,” Cheema said. “Nothing special has been pointed out against [Wahab] – neither from the ICC nor elsewhere – and until something is found these are mere speculations. As far as the PCB is concerned and Wahab is concerned, there are no allegations which we have received.”Coincidentally, Misbah and Cheema were speaking within minutes of an MCC World Cricket Committee media release in Cape Town, calling on the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit to impose life bans on any captain, vice-captain or coach found guilty of corruption.

Lisa Sthalekar led a comprehensive Australian routing of New Zealand in the second Twenty20 at North Sydney Oval, where the Australians took a 2-0 lead. Sthalekar scored the only half-century of the match as Australia posted 5 for 128 having been sent in, and she then claimed 3 for 16 in New Zealand’s chase.New Zealand were in trouble from the start of their innings, losing a wicket in each of the first three overs. Katie Perkins (19) was the only player to reach double figures as they crashed to be all out for 69, their lowest total in a Twenty20 international and the fourth-lowest all-out total by any side.Julie Hunter proved a nightmare for the New Zealand batsmen as she collected 2 for 4 from her three overs, while Sarah Coyte and Erin Osborn each colletced two wickets. But the standout performer was Sthalekar, who opened the bowling with her finger-spin, having already done the damage with the bat.Batting at No.5, Sthalekar came in with the score at 3 for 52 at almost precisely the halfway point of the innings, and her 52 from 32 balls helped the Australians push up to a competitive total. Meg Lanning (27) and Alex Blackwell (20) also contributed for Australia.
