It is not the same kind of mental strength he will need if he is asked to face Dale Steyn and company at Headingley but James Taylor passed one test of temperament at the first time of asking after trotting down the pavilion steps on Sunday morning.In between walking off at 106 not out on Saturday and attempting to pick up where he had left off he had a lot to be excited about: a first Championship century as a Nottinghamshire batsman, then a phone call telling him he was the man nominated to replace Ravi Bopara in the 13 for the second Test. He would not have slept especially well. Yet there was not a hint of distraction in his approach to the job in hand, which was specifically to bat Sussex out of the game.And inasmuch as he was still batting when Chris Read decided a lead of 349 was enough for his bowlers to be let loose on Sussex for a second time he fulfilled the task. He was 163 not out, having added 57 off 63 balls to his overnight score with no chances offered.How many more chances he will have to score centuries in his Nottinghamshire shirt remains to be seen. Stuart Broad, the county’s last major recruit from Leicestershire, has played in only 11 Championship matches in five seasons since arriving at Trent Bridge, never more than three in one season. If Taylor is as successful as Broad has been since England called on him for the first time he will become a similarly occasional participant. At least Taylor has played 10 times already and, furthermore, as a batsman, he should need fewer rests.Taylor and Voges added 77 to the overnight total in little more than an hour, leaving their partnership unbroken at 148 and heralding a day in which, rarely this summer – apart from when there has been no play at all – no wickets fell. أعلن مسعود أوزيل، نجم المنتخب الألماني السابق، وريال مدريد وآرسنال، وفيردر بريمن وشاالكة وفنربخشة وباشاك شهير، اعتزاله كرة القدم نهائيا بعد مسيرة امتدت حتى 17 عامًا.

وكتب أوزيل عبر حسابه بموقع “إنستجرام”: “مرحبا بالجميع، بعد دراسة متأنية، أعلن اعتزالي كرة القدم الاحترافية، لقد حظيت بامتياز أن أكون لاعب كرة قدم محترف منذ ما يقرب من 17 عامًا وأشعر بالامتنان الشديد لهذه الفرصة”.

وأضاف: “لكن في الأسابيع والأشهر الأخيرة، بعد تعرضي لبعض الإصابات، أصبح من الواضح أكثر فأكثر أن الوقت قد حان لترك مرحلة كرة القدم الكبيرة، لقد كانت رحلة رائعة مليئة باللحظات والعواطف التي لا تُنسى”.

Sachin Tendulkar has officially become a Member of Parliament after taking oath at a ceremony in Delhi. He had been nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament, in April and has become the first active India sportsperson to become an MP.Tendulkar was named as one of the 12 presidential nominees for Rajya Sabha membership that is reserved for those persons “having special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service”. A Rajya Sabha MP’s tenure is six years.After the ceremony, Tendulkar said his cricket career would remain top priority. “I’m here because of my cricketing career,” he said. “I can’t take any focus away from my cricket that is where it all started for me… as and when there is time in between, I will look at other things, how I can help and bring in whatever changes not only (for) cricket but all other sports demand.”Tendulkar also said that as MP he would look to improve not just cricket but other sports as well. “I think I’m in a better position, not only to help cricket but also other sports in the country which is really important, it means a lot to me,” he said. “I’d be happy if I’m remembered as someone who has contributed to all sports in India rather than just my cricket statistics, that would be fantastic.”The swearing-in ceremony was held in the chamber of Hamid Ansari, the vice-president of India, who is also the chairman of the Rajya Sabha. reported that while few MPs were around as the parliament was not in session, the parliament staff had lined the corridors in anticipation of Tendulkar’s arrival. Teasing (43%), swearing (40%), taunts (34%) and verbal threats (16%) were all cited.Most disturbingly, 42% of parents said that their child lost confidence after being bullied on the playing field, with half of that group showing reluctance to take further part as a result.A separate survey of 1,250 schoolchildren suggested that parents were not being over-protective. More than half reported verbal abuse during school matches and a quarter of children said they had seen a team-mate deliberately tripped, kicked or pushed over.Stephenson said: “The results from the survey highlight an alarming trend in school sport, which needs to be proactively addressed. MCC’s ongoing partnership with Chance to Shine provides the perfect vehicle to do this, as children get the opportunity to learn about the MCC Spirit of Cricket principles of playing hard, but fair.”Wasim Khan, the chief executive of Chance to Shine, said: “It is worrying to hear that this kind of psychological warfare is being waged on our school playing fields. We are teaching children from a young age to play competitively, but to respect the opposition as well as their team-mates. We need to stamp out this bullying in school sport.”
