Sunderland set for Nathan Broadhead talks

A major Sunderland update has emerged regarding their interest in Nathan Broadhead heading into the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Kristjaan Speakman has confirmed that the Wearsiders will be holding talks with the 24-year-old’s parent club Everton with a view to bringing him back for another spell at the Stadium of Light, after spending the 2021/22 campaign on loan from the Premier League outfit.

The Black Cats chief told The Northern Echo: “We will have a conversation with Everton this week, to see where they are at with it and where we are at with it, and see if that’s aligned.

“We have to respect the fact that he is an Everton player. We have seen him as our player for the year, because we had to get the best out of him but now that the season is finished he unfortunately goes back to being an Everton player.”

Alex Neil will be excited

The Sunderland head coach will surely be left feeling excited by these quotes from Speakman, as Broadhead returning next season would be a huge boost for the 40-year-old.

The Welsh attacker was lethal in front of goal in the 2021/22 League One campaign as he produced an eye-catching 10 goals in 15 starts for the club. He averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.91, remaining consistent with his performances whenever he was available during an injury-hit time on Wearside, which illustrates the big impact he had when he was on the pitch.

The youngster has also been backed to step up to the mark in the second tier as Speakman said: “Look, he’s had some incredible moments and he’s been an inspiration in many respects in terms of some of the goals he’s scored. It has been harder for him of late because of injury but you can’t take away from the fact that he has got all the attributes to go and play at Championship level.”

Neil will therefore be excited by the prospect of working with the 24-year-old next season, as he is a talented player with the potential to improve even further. He has the scope to develop into an excellent option for the club in 2022/23, as suggested by Speakman’s comments and his form in League One, and the Sunderland manager would surely enjoy attempting to get the best out of him if the Black Cats can obtain him for another season.

This is why the ex-Norwich and Preston manager will be thrilled by the club’s efforts to bring Broadhead back to the Stadium of Light, and he will now be hoping that a deal can be agreed for the Welshman.

West Ham plotting move for Kalvin Phillips

West Ham United are believed to be interested in bringing Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips to the club this summer, having previously tried to do a deal in January.

What’s the word?

As per The Sun, Hammers boss David Moyes is eyeing new midfield targets ahead of next season, with the Scotsman keen to welcome the Euro 2020 star to the London Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.

Such a move would not be viewed as a replacement for Declan Rice, though, with the east Londoners holding firm on their desire to keep the £150m-rated talisman at the club, despite his recent rejection of a new contract offer.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham news!”]

Moyes and co had reportedly seen a £50m offer for Phillips rebuffed in the winter, although the 26-year-old – who has also been linked with a move to Manchester United – could now be available for a reduced fee should Jesse Marsch’s side suffer relegation.

Imagine him and Rice

Despite the persistent rumours about Rice’s future, it would appear that West Ham are anticipating the 23-year-old to still be at the club next season, hence the move to try and bring in his England colleague to rekindle the formidable partnership which inspired the Three Lions to the Euro 2020 final last summer.

Although Phillips has endured a frustrating season due to injury – with his absence having been a notable factor in Leeds’ demise – his displays in his first major tournament and in his debut Premier League campaign last term showcased just how huge a talent he truly is.

Such were the quality of his performances on the international stage, managerial icon Fabio Capello dubbed the £45m-rated man the “best modern midfielder I have seen”, while also labelling him as an “aggressive player” for his all-action, robust style.

More excitingly for those of an Irons persuasion, the veteran coach also heaped praise on the Rice-Phillips midfield axis, dubbing them a “phenomenal” duo and saying of their partnership: “They are the secret of this great England. If the defense is iron, it is thanks to them because they protect their comrades.”

Furthermore, even amid a trying season at Elland Road, the £38k-per-week warrior has still produced a string of impressive statistics, averaging 1.1 interceptions, 2.7 tackles and 0.8 clearances per game in his 18 league outings.

A ferocious competitor with seemingly boundless energy, he also ranks in the top 1% for pressures made among midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues, as well as the top 4% for both tackles and blocks made.

A real workhorse, the Leeds academy graduate appears a perfect fit for Moyes’ approach and the perfect long-term partner for Rice at West Ham as well as for England.

Lampard drops Everton transfer update

Everton have had a troubling season in the Premier League and their battle with relegation has led to wide speculation on the future of players like Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and now Frank Lampard has addressed the rumours surrounding the striker.

What’s the latest?

The Toffees manager took to his pre-match press conference to quash rumours about the 25-year-old potentially leaving Goodison Park this summer, after Newcastle United were strongly linked with him earlier this week.

Lampard told the press (via Daily Mail): “He’s a huge player, they are not very common. He is contracted to us, three years left on his contract, and I want to take this club forward and players like Dominic help that.”

‘He’s a player that would be wanted by clubs because of the level of player he is. There are not many strikers out there, they cost a lot of money. I’m not worried about him at all.”

Supporters will be delighted

There is no doubt that Calvert-Lewin has become a fan favourite at Everton when you consider his goal contributions to the team since his arrival at Goodison Park six years ago, so supporters will surely be delighted that Lampard has no intentions of letting the striker leave this summer and is planning for a future which includes him.

The transfer rumours come after a disappointing season by the striker’s standards, with numerous injury problems plaguing the England international throughout. As a result, he has not scored a goal for the Toffees since August as he struggles to gain a consistent run of form this season.

Despite Calvert-Lewin’s injury problems this term, the centre-forward is by far the biggest attacking threat the club has had over the last few years, with an impressive 56 goals and 17 assists in 188 appearances for Everton since he joined back in 2016.

Lampard’s admission that the striker is firmly in his plans is a promising update for supporters, as the 25-year-old has been constantly linked with multiple Premier League clubs, with Arsenal also reportedly interested in snatching him away from Merseyside this summer.

That being said, if the former Chelsea boss can’t pull off the great escape in the relegation battle by the end of the season, it will almost definitely play a huge part in potential outgoings at Goodison Park this summer, so focusing on getting the points needed to remain in the Premier League is essential.

Sheffield Wednesday could sign Haygarth

Sheffield Wednesday have taken free agent Max Haygarth on trial ahead of a potential out-of-window move.

The Lowdown: Haygarth profiled

Haygarth is 20 years of age and is a left-footed winger who left Brentford over the summer. Previously on the books of Manchester United, Haygarth is valued at £90,000 by Transfermarkt.

He made three senior appearances for Brentford but has been without a club since the summer, and it looks as if a move to Hillsborough could be on the cards.

The Latest: Wednesday trial

According to The Star, Haygarth is now on trial with Wednesday after spending time with Luton Town earlier in the summer.

Their report claims that Haygarth isn’t the only player on trial with The Owls, with an unnamed trialist also in action for the U21s on Tuesday.

The Verdict: Good first impression

Haygarth will be looking to earn a contract with Wednesday and made the best first impression possible against Coventry City yesterday. The youngster netted a late winner for the U21s in what was just their second win of the season.

You’d expect that he may feature in upcoming games against Wigan Athletic and Sheffield United, and more positive performances could earn him a professional deal.

Tottenham: Tim Sherwood raves over ‘magnificent’ Kulusevski

Tottenham Hotspur have a ‘magnificent’ talent in Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski, according to the club’s former boss Tim Sherwood.

The Lowdown: Kulusevski shines…

The former Parma star has seriously turned heads since he put pen to paper on a move from Juventus in the winter transfer window.

Joining Spurs alongside Rodrigo Bentancur, the 22-year-old took to life in north London by storm over the second half of 2021/22, scoring five goals and registering eight assists over 14 Premier League starts (WhoScored).

His performances have put him in good stead with the Lilywhites faithful and Kulusevski has continued that fine form when given the opportunity this term, racking up another goal and two assists over six domestic appearances so far.

While the Scandinavian starlet now has marquee summer signing Richarlison to battle for a starting place, it’s clear that the winger can compete going by the opinion of one ex-Spurs manager.

The Latest: Sherwood makes ‘magnificent’ Kulusevski claim…

Speaking on talkSPORT, Sherwood absolutely raved over Kulusevski, calling the Sweden international a ‘revelation’..

The former Tottenham midfielder and manager gushed: “Kulusevski, since he’s been to the club, has been a revelation. He’s been magnificent.”

The Verdict: Serious talent…

The exciting forward really is a serious talent and we’ll hold little surprise if he goes on to become a real Tottenham fan favourite for years to come.

Dubbed a ‘frightening talent’ by members of the Italian press (Carlo Garganese), Kulusevski has certainly lived up to that tag since putting pen to paper on a move to Hotspur Way this year.

According to WhoScored, the attacking midfield man already ranks in Tottenham’s top five for shots at goal, key passes made and completed dribbles per 90 on average this season.

Given Richarlison’s brilliant form also, Spurs supporters could be about to witness a real battle for places on the right-hand side of Antonio Conte’s forward line.

Sky Sports man astounded by ‘amazing’ Spurs signing

Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has been left astounded by new Tottenham Hotspur signing Richarlison so far this season.

The Lowdown: Tottenham move

Having arrived at Hotspur Way earlier this summer in a deal worth £60m, Spurs manager Antonio Conte has eased the Brazil international into the starting XI, with his first four appearances coming off the bench.

However, Richarlison was handed his first start in a Lilywhites shirt at the weekend in Tottenham’s 2-1 victory over Fulham.

As quoted by football.london, the Italian praised the 25-year-old for his ‘amazing’ performance against the Cottagers, in which he played the full 90 minutes.

The Latest: Robinson’s comments

Robinson, who works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has sung Richarlison’s praises for how well he has adapted to life in N17.

Speaking with Football Insider about the Brazil forward, the former Spurs goalkeeper claimed: “Wow, he is looking like a top-class signing.

“I was really impressed with him at the end of last season for Everton. He was playing well in a side that was really struggling. He scored some important goals. When it really mattered, he stood up to be counted.

“Now we are seeing him be better with better players around him. He is getting the service and the interaction. Players are seeing his runs quicker.

“He is looking like a top-class player at the moment. I have no doubt that he is going to prove to be a great signing.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Great signing

When looking at Richarlison’s underlying statistics, it is no wonder why Conte wanted to bring him to Hotspur Way this summer.

As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the 25-year-old ranks in the top 2% for blocks, the top 4% for tackles and the top 5% for pressures.

On Saturday, he achieved the joint-highest Sofascore rating of any Spurs player (7.7), winning nine duels and four tackles while also providing the assist for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s opener and seeing a late goal of his own chalked off by VAR.

Having scored 53 goals in 152 appearances for Everton, Richarlison is certainly a Premier League proven talent who can be relied upon to finish his chances in the final third.

Therefore, with more rotation possibly now expected for Dejan Kulusevski as the Champions League gets underway, the Brazilian could become a crucial player for Spurs as they head into a busy schedule this season.

Liverpool: Mane or Salah expected to leave

This summer is set to be an incredibly busy one for Liverpool who in previous windows, have opted to conduct their business quietly and with minimum fuss.

What’s the word?

The upcoming transfer window could be an entirely different affair for Jurgen Klopp, however.

They will need to find an answer to Manchester City’s acquisition of Erling Haaland and they could lose some of their prized possessions too.

Sadio Mane’s future is up in the air with the Senegalese attracting interest from Bayern Munich while Mo Salah’s own contract situation is well-documented too.

Both players find themselves out of contract in the summer of 2023, but a worrying claim has now been made about their futures.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

It comes from pundit Noel Whelan who told Football Insider: “That big potential transfer fee could do a lot of good. It could be Mane, or it could be Salah.

“One of the two, I believe, will be leaving this summer. For me personally, I’m expecting it to be Salah.

“Mane is looking more and more like the one who will be sticking around, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Supporters will be gutted

There are no two ways about this; if Salah decides to leave Anfield behind then the fanbase will be absolutely gutted.

This is a player who has become one of the world’s best since playing under Klopp and arriving back in the Premier League following a torrid spell at Chelsea.

He has proven the Blues wrong and is now synonymous with what the Liverpool manager has built in Merseyside; a winning machine with goals in abundance.

Salah has been the chief when it comes to finding the net and his numbers in recent years have been nothing short of remarkable.

Throughout 2021/22, the Egyptian attacker has beaten the goalkeeper on 30 occasions while also registering 16 assists. That has helped Liverpool to two domestic cup triumphs and the Champions League final.

In total, the dazzling 29-year-old has scored 155 times in Liverpool red and trying to replace those numbers will be an incredibly hard task.

Diogo Jota has started to stake his claim while the addition of Luis Diaz – a man with 11 goal involvements since January – are primed to take on the mantle.

However, neither possess the truly elite capabilities that Salah has in his locker just yet.

If he does leave Merseyside behind this summer, it will be an end of an era and a sad one at that for Liverpool supporters.

Bad news for Tel: Frank must unleash Spurs "superstar" after loan spell

Tottenham Hotspur have reshaped their squad this summer, and with Thomas Frank now at the helm, it feels like the Londoners can challenge toward the top end of the Premier League once again.

It’s been a fruitful start for the Danish coach, taken from Brentford after the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou. Not without blots on the copybook, the Lilywhites have marched steadily through the early stages of the campaign, third in the league with ten points from five fixtures and having beaten Villarreal in their opening match back in the Champions League.

The new recruits are blending in nicely, but not all are firing on all cylinders. Indeed, despite having spent the latter half of the 2024/25 term on loan at the club, Mathys Tel continues to leave plenty to be desired.

Mathys Tel's struggles at Spurs

It was not Frank’s decision to activate a £30m permanent option to reel Tel over to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for good, but Daniel Levy’s. Now, Levy has stepped down, and the original bid, led by Ange, has left Tel somewhat adrift, having lacked quality on the field.

Aged 20, it’s clear that confidence is a factor, having featured five times across all competitions, yet to score or assist, following an indifferent start to life in London last season, posting three goals and two assists across his five months on board.

His only starting berth in the Premier League so far came during the 3-0 romp over West Ham United, and Tel was handed a 5/10 match rating by football.london, who acknowledged his hard work but drew attention to the luckless performance at number nine.

No one can doubt the France U21 forward’s commitment, and having been hailed by analyst Ben Mattinson as being the “long-term Heung-min Son replacement”.

That’s all well and good, but Spurs actually have another rising winger in Mikey Moore, and there may not be room for both in Frank’s system.

Mikey Moore's Spurs future

Moore left Tottenham this summer, relocating to Rangers in the Scottish Premiership on a one-year loan deal.

Hailed as a “superstar” in the making by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Moore only turned 18 in August but has already featured 21 times for Tottenham’s senior side, bypassing the road into U21 territory after an incredible start to life with the U18s.

His development was deemed to be best served away from the Premier League, gaining invaluable experience in a prominent role at Rangers.

Moore has endured a somewhat difficult start to his time in Scotland, but this is hardly his fault. Most of the blame can be apportioned to Russell Martin and the dysfunctional first-team system at Rangers, who have started the season wretchedly.

But the boy’s talent cannot be disputed, having gone from strength to strength among the Tottenham seniors last season before his 18th birthday.

Given that Moore tends to occupy that left-sided flank, he and Tel might come to blows in a tussle for the ascendancy down the line, and the teenager’s pace and power and potency will soon be translated to the senior stage, especially if Rangers manage to click into gear in the coming months.

Given that Moore is two years Tel’s junior and already looking every bit the same calibre of player, albeit raw and unpolished, it might just be that both prospects cannot cohabit in Frank’s set-up, not in the long run.

If push comes to shove, Moore might just emerge on top.

Beleaguered RR need a batting fix against in-form DC

DC will be looking to get back to winning ways after their perfect start was cut short in their last game

Ashish Pant15-Apr-20253:11

Rayudu: Hetmyer should bat at No. 4 for RR

Big picture – Can RR get their floundering season back on track? They lost their first two games, then won two and have now lost two more matches to have just four points after six games. And if they thought it could get any easier, Rajasthan Royals (RR) now travel to the Arun Jaitley Stadium to face second-placed Delhi Capitals (DC), who seem to have most bases covered.RR’s top order has been found wanting and without the depth in their batting, their middle overs have lacked teeth. RR have the second-best powerplay run rate of 9.72 in IPL 2025, behind Punjab Kings, but that drops to 7.86 in the middle overs: the second-worst behind Chennai Super Kings (CSK).That’s where RR will have to buckle up against DC. In Kuldeep Yadav, the hosts have one of the most potent middle-overs bowlers. Kuldeep has bowled 18 overs in this phase and has gone at an economy of just 5.94, picking up nine wickets, the second most only behind Noor Ahmad. On a flat surface, RR desperately need their inconsistent batting to come good. Sanju Samson has scored just fifty so far, Riyan Parag form has been indifferent, Nitish Rana has just had one innings of note, while Shimron Hetmyer’s entry point has stirred some debate. Only Yashasvi Jaiswal with two fifties in his last three games seems to have found some consistency. RR will need the rest of the power-packed batting unit to fire.Jake Fraser-McGurk is yet to click in IPL 2025•Delhi Capitals

For DC, there are fewer issues, but Jake Fraser-McGurk’s form might have them sweating. He’s scored 46 runs in five matches at 9.2 and a strike rate of 100, a far cry from the sensational season he had last year. While the DC management has backed him, time might be running out for the youngster.DC have four wins in five games, but their loss against Mumbai Indians will sting them and they will want to get back to winning ways ASAP. A clash against a beleaguered RR might just be what they are looking for.Form guide: Can DC make it five out of six?Delhi Capitals LWWWW

Team news and likely XIIs: Is du Plessis fit? There is still uncertainty over Faf du Plessis’ fitness with the word from the DC camp being that he is recovering. “He’s recovering well although I’m not sure (if he’ll play or not). As far as I know, it’s not a big concern,” Mohit Sharma said about du Plessis’ availability for the RR game. If he is fit, it is likely he will replace Fraser-McGurk at the top of the order, with Karun Nair slotting in at No. 3. If du Plessis is yet to recover, then DC might go with the same XII as the game against MI, with Nair swapping with Mukesh Kumar as the Impact Sub and vice-versa. Du Plessis, however, was not available for practice on the eve of the game.Delhi Capitals (probable): 1 Faf du Plessis/Jake Fraser-McGurk, 2 Abishek Porel, 3 Karun Nair, 4 KL Rahul (wk), 5 Tristan Stubbs, 6 Ashutosh Sharma, 7 Axar Patel (capt), 8 Vipraj Nigam, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Mohit Sharma, 12 Mukesh KumarRR do not have any injury concerns but need to take care of other issues. In the spotlight – Karun Nair and Riyan ParagAfter what has been a barely believable domestic season for Karun Nair, he’s made a statement knock in IPL 2025. In his maiden appearance of this season, Nair smashed a 40-ball 89 to nearly take DC home against MI. His takedown of Jasprit Bumrah – 26 runs in nine balls – will remain the highlight of the season. He came in as an Impact Sub against MI, but that is likely to change going forward, especially if Fraser-McGurk’s lukewarm season continues. Incidentally, Nair has had a couple of stints with RR, the most recent one coming in 2022, the last time he played in the IPL and also had one of his best IPL seasons with them back in 2014.There were a lot of expectations from Riyan Parag after the bumper season he had in 2024, but it’s been a season of what-ifs for the batter so far. He’s scored at least 25 or more in five of the six innings so far, yet his highest score remains 43. Parag has looked compact most of the time he’s walked out but has thrown it away more often than not. Considering the placid surface in Delhi, RR will rely a lot on Parag to provide the top-order muscle he is capable of. Another important battle will be between Parag and the DC spinners. He does not have a great record against spinners in the IPL; a strike rate of 118.61, and that will be crucial considering he will come up against Kuldeep and Vipraj Nigam, two of the better spinners in the tournament this year. The big questionPitch and conditionsDelhi has recently become a haven for batters with run-scoring at an all-time high. In the last seven games, teams batting first have posted scores in excess of 200 each time and have also won. The surface for the DC-MI game was once again a belter where the home side almost chased down 206. But, there was also some turn on offer and that could bring the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga, Nigam, Kuldeep and Maheesh Theekshana into the game. The temperature is likely to hover around the mid to late 30s on the Celsius scale, but the evenings are expected to be cooler.Stats and TriviaKuldeep’s economy in IPL 2025 of 5.60 is the best for any bowler with at least ten overs under his beltRR have taken the third-fewest wickets so far in the IPL: 29 in six inningsRR are marginally ahead in the head-to-head count, having won 15 out of 29 matches between the two sides, with DC winning 14Mukesh has had the wood over Jaiswal in the IPL. Jaiswal has managed just seven runs in two matches against the pacer and fallen twiceKL Rahul has a great record against Jofra Archer in the IPL: 89 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 151 without being dismissed even onceQuotes”I am not someone who… if the game demands that I should tell Sanju [Samson] or anyone that I can do something here or bowl, then I will. But there is no need to overthink. I always try to take whatever comes my way and help the team, be it bowling, batting or fielding. I also want to bowl regularly, because I have bowled before and am a decent bowler. If situation arises, why not, I will talk to Sanju and let’s see what happens.”
.”KD (Kuldeep) is bowling very well not just for DC but in the entire tournament. Despite bowling on small grounds, dew being around, he is not being read that well right now and hopefully he won’t be later also through the tournament. The way Axar has been using him to pick wickets, break partnerships is great.”
