Celtic secure historic Champions League victory over Barcelona

Celtic boss Neil Lennon admitted the UEFA Champions League win over Barcelona was one of the proudest nights of his career.

Lennon’s side wrote their names into the history books with their momentous 2-1 win over the Spanish giants at a buoyant Celtic Park.

“It is right up there, one of the proudest nights of my career,” Lennon told Sky Sports. “It’s just a monumental effort from those players tonight on the anniversary of the club. It is a very special occasion to do themselves justice tonight and they’ve just beaten the best team in the world. It is two of the stiffest examinations they will ever get in their careers and they’ve come through it with flying colours.”

Lennon admitted they pinpointed Barcelona’s weakness at set-pieces with their first goal coming from a corner as Victor Wanyama netted from Charlie Mulgrew’s cross.

“Charlie Mulgrew is one of the best dead ball players around and his delivery was magnificent and Wanyama, who just keeps getting better and better, scores a great goal for us and then you try and weather the storm and you know it’s coming and there is not a lot you can do about it but we saw it through. Young Tony Watt comes on and a few of them are dying on their feet as they’ve given everything and Watt gives us a new lease of life and scores a brilliant second goal and it is going to go down in the history books of the club.

Lennon believes the win gives them a real opportunity of reaching the knockout stages with Celtic in second place behind Barca and three points clear of Benfica.

“It gives us a great chance,” added Lennon. “Benfica beat Spartak Moscow so they are still on our tails so we’ve got to go to Benfica and try to raise our game again and we will cross that bridge when we come to it and we will enjoy the evening and the moment.”

Maitland-Niles continues to show glimpses of quality ahead of Arsenal’s new era

Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester City wasn’t an easy night for youngster Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Making only his second Premier League appearance of the season at right-back, the Foxes clearly targeted the youngster due to his inexperience; 47% of their attacking play came down the left flank, which was essentially the source for Leicester’s first two goals.

A looped cross travelled from left to right before being finished off by Kelechi Iheanacho, while Maitland-Niles’ failure to contain Demarai Gray eventually saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan foul the English winger for a penalty kick.

And yet, despite the 20-year-old’s difficulties, there were still moments of individual quality that really shone through at the King Power Stadium. He actually created the joint-most chances, completed the most dribbles and made the joint-second-most tackles of any Gunners player, although the England U21’s 16 possession losses served as a key reminder that he still suffers from the inconsistency of youth.

Whoever replaces Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium this summer will be desperate to make his mark on the squad via the transfer market, but the glimmers of huge potential Maitland-Niles has shown during his short Arsenal career suggest he could be even more valuable than a new signing for the north Londoners.

Rather than investing money in big names, Arsenal’s next manager should be investing his time in Arsenal’s promising young players instead – starting with Maitland-Niles. Not only will it help preserve the distinct Arsenal DNA Wenger will leave behind once he officially steps down, but it will also save the club a fortune in transfer fees.

Swansea make Ki Sung-Yueng their record signing

Highly rated South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng has become Swansea City’s record signing after putting pen to paper on a three-year deal from Celtic.

Ki, 23, will not be able to play for the Swans as they take on West Ham in today’s lunchtime kick off but he is clearly excited to have arrived.

“When I look at Swansea I see a club that is growing and growing, and the style here is very attractive to me,” he told the club’s official website.

“Last year I watched them a lot in the Premier League and they did things very differently to a lot of the other teams. They wanted to keep the ball and pass it around, which I love to do. When they didn’t have the ball they worked so hard to get it back quickly.”

“This is something I have dreamt about since I was a child – playing in the Premier League against the best players in the world. I can’t wait to play my first game.”

Another long injury lay-off for Cummins

Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins is set to miss much of the 2013-14 domestic season after a recurrence of his lower back stress injury

Brydon Coverdale19-Aug-2013

Pat Cummins’ history of injuries has affected his selection for Australia•AFP

Fast bowler Pat Cummins is set to miss a third consecutive home summer with a recurrence of his lower back stress injury. Cummins, 20, made his long-awaited return to first-class cricket on the Australia A tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa over the past month but after taking five wickets in two first-class games, and none in a 50-over match, he was sent home early with back trouble that has proven serious.”Pat returned home early from the Australia A tour of South Africa with some side/back soreness and scans have shown a partial recurrence of his lower back bone stress injury suffered in October last year when he returned home from Champions League,” CA chief medical officer, Justin Paoloni, said. “He will be closely monitored to determine his return to the playing field, but expect that he will miss most of the 2013-14 domestic cricket season.”Cummins has been plagued by injuries, particularly back and foot problems, since he was Man of the Match on his Test debut in Johannesburg, where he claimed seven wickets in Australia’s memorable victory in November 2011. The injuries have been so persistent that Cummins had been unable to add to his first-class tally of four matches until the recent A series in Africa, and he has not played a Sheffield Shield match since March 2011.The management of Cummins has become a major issue for Cricket Australia’s management and medical staff, who seem uncertain as to whether more bowling or less is the answer to strengthening his developing body. He returned home from his maiden Test tour in 2011 with a foot injury and a back stress fracture ruling him out of the 2012-13 home summer, and his only cricket of note in the past couple of years has been in the shorter formats.Last June, Cummins was part of Australia’s one-day international campaign in England but was sent home with a side strain, and he returned in September for T20s against Pakistan in the UAE and the World Twenty20 that followed. However, Cummins went straight on to the Champions League T20 in South Africa in October last year and returned home with the back problem that ended his home summer before it began.Cummins travelled with the Australia A squad to England in May this year as a non-playing member of the group as Australia’s management aimed to reintegrate him back into the mix. At the time, Cummins said that he had worked with a running coach in an effort to fix the mechanics of his action and straighten out the alignment of his body, hoping to place less stress on his back.”It’s going against everything I’ve done for the last 20 years and trying to do something totally different,” Cummins told ESPNcricinfo at the time. “It’s certainly been a little bit foreign, but at the same time I want to nail it down because I know it’s going to turn me into a better bowler.”

Supreme Court issues notice to BCCI, Srinivasan and Royals

The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to the BCCI, N Srinivasan, his company India Cements – which owns IPL team Chennai Super Kings – and Rajasthan Royals on an appeal challenging the Bombay High Court order from a month ago for not appointing a fresh committee to probe the alleged corruption in the IPL.The Bombay High Court had ruled that the BCCI’s probe panel which investigated allegations of corruption in the IPL was constituted illegally. The appeal against that ruling, lodged by the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB), was on the grounds that the high court did not appoint a new committee to investigate the matter afresh.A bench, headed by Justice AK Patnaik, agreed to hear the CAB appeal, and clubbed it with the appeal filed by the BCCI that had challenged the high-court judgement on different grounds – the Indian board maintained that the two-member probe panel was legal. The BCCI was represented by C Aryama Sundaram, while the CAB case was argued by eminent lawyer Harish Salve. The parties issued notices have until September 11 to reply to the Supreme Court, when the cross appeals are scheduled to be heard by the apex court. The Supreme Court had earlier refused to grant an interim stay on the high-court verdict, denting the efforts of Srinivasan to return as BCCI chief.Srinivasan had stepped aside from discharging his duties as BCCI president in the light of the spot-fixing and betting scandal which allegedly involved his son-in-law and Chennai Super Kings top official Gurunath Meiyappan. The high-court order had come on July 30, just two days after the panel, comprising two former judges of the Madras High Court Justices T Jayarama Chouta and R Balasubramanian, submitted its report that gave a clean chit Meiyappan, India Cements, Royals’ holding company Jaipur IPL Pvt Ltd and their co-owner Raj Kundra.

PL25: The greatest centre-backs in Premier League history

After hanging up his boots in 2015, Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand is undoubtedly remembered as one of the greatest centre-backs in Premier League history.

Six top-flight titles, alongside a Champions League honour in 2008, is enough evidence of that. But perhaps the ultimate question surrounding the 39-year-old is whether he was the very best we’ve seen over the last 25 years of the Premier League.

Football FanCast takes a look at the candidates in with a shout for that title, and then give you the power to decide…

Rio Ferdinand

No centre-back on this list earned more top-flight honours than the former England man, which is a stunning achievement in itself. In many ways though, Ferdinand’s credentials for being the Premier League’s greatest centre-back lay in the fact he was much more than simply a talented and athletically imperious centre-half; during Ferdinand’s era, few central defenders offered his quality in possession, speed and agility in quite the same way.

It made him the perfect centre-back partner, capable of covering behind a more old-fashioned accomplice or bringing the ball into United’s midfield to link up with Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes – a vital component of the Red Devils’ ability to build attacks from the engine room.

It’s incredibly telling two clubs spent a combined £52million on him in the space of two years, back when that was an almost unprecedented amount of money for any player let alone a defender. But if there’s one criticism of Ferdinand, it’s that he was only truly at his best when placed alongside someone like Nemanja Vidic who offered that physical and aerial dominance.

Sol Campbell

A considerably less elegant centre-half but for what Sol Campbell lacked in style he more than made up for in sheer brutish physicality. In that sense, Campbell had absolutely everything; a towering leap, plenty of speed and the strength to wrestle a baby rhyno. Add great positional intelligence and occasional running-back-esque marauds up the pitch into the equation and Campbell was easily one of the most feared defenders in Europe during his hay-day.

He was also a vital member of Arsenal’s Invincibles starting XI as it’s most defensive element, which is perhaps the strongest endorsement of the former England international’s credentials – he started all but three games that season. Likewise, it takes an exceptionally brave man to trade the Tottenham captaincy for a place in the Gunners’ backline by way of a free transfer and mental toughness was a huge part of Campbell’s game as well; for varying reasons, he’s had to endure his fair share of stick and abuse down the years.

The obvious negative compared to the rest on this list though, is that Campbell is the only one to concede more goals than make appearances in the top flight. That’s largely due to his time at Portsmouth and Spurs’ many years wading through mid-table mediocrity.

Vincent Kompany

The only candidate still plying his trade in the Premier League, albeit at a far reduced capacity due to continuous injury problems. But that shouldn’t take away from how exceptional Vincent Kompany was during both of Manchester City’s title-winning seasons, all the more impressively playing alongside Joloen Lescott and then Martin Demichelis.

What always stands out most about Kompany, aside from the usual physical dominance and aerial ability you’d expect of top-class defenders, is how he plays on the front foot, regularly stepping up to nick the ball and instigate a counter-attack rather than simply waiting for the action to come to him. That underlines the attacking ethos the Sheik owners have attempted to create at the Etihad and the Belgium international has been a central figure in City’s stunning rise, captaining them from 2011 onwards.

Only this season have City looked anywhere near as formidable without the crocked captain in their starting line-up and while that’s partly inevitable considering how exceptional a centre-half he is, it’s also a testament to the leadership, organisation and inspiration he provides.

Nemanja Vidic

Nemanja Vidic made the fewest Premier League appearances of any centre-back on this list but he was the second-most successful during that time, his five titles only trumped by defensive partner Rio Ferdinand. And that’s not a mere coincidence; he was the perfect foil to Ferdinand’s more technical style. While Vidic was no slouch on the ball himself, his greatest strengths resided in the more traditional centre-half job description – essentially, keeping the ball out of the net by any means possible.

That required body-on-the-line blocks and last-ditch tackles, while few, if any Premier League defenders, have come close to matching his utter dominance in the air. He and Ferdinand produced arguably the most balanced and fearsome centre-back partnership in Europe during their best years and nine seasons together produced five titles, alongside a European honour in 2008.

There are drawbacks, though – chiefly that Vidic did have a knack for getting himself sent off and after a serious injury during the 2011/12 season, he was never quite the same force again.

John Terry

The complete centre-back, pure and simple. John Terry was the best in the world at defending the near post for pretty much his entire Chelsea career, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg of what the Captain, Leader, Legend offered the Blues. Much like Vincent Kompany at City, he was one of the the driving forces behind Chelsea’s rise under Roman Abramovich, captaining the team to five Premier League titles (the first and last a decade apart) and a Champions League in 2012.

On top of that though, Terry was simply an exceptional footballer up until a few years ago when his talents noticeably waned. Completely dominant in both boxes, to the extent that he’s the top-scoring defender in Premier League history, a fantastic reader of the game and brilliant at distributing the ball with both feet – something that went unappreciated for much of his career.

Terry’s game lacked any real weaknesses and evolved over time to suit his age. Furthermore, it’s a testament to his mental strength that a player who drew such negative attention from the media, often rightly so, for a whole host of different reasons never allowed it to affect his performances or his ability to lead the team. People have questioned whether he almost had too much influence at Stamford Bridge though, and whether that’s affected the success of the club over the years.

So, who do you rate as the best centre-back in Premier League history? Vote below…

Battered India face uphill task

ESPNcricinfo previews the fourth match of the tri-series between West Indies and India in Port-of-Spain

The Preview by Devashish Fuloria04-Jul-2013Match factsFriday, July 5
Start time 0930 (1330 GMT)A different ball game: The Indian team has found the going tough on the slower pitches in the Caribbean•AFP

Big PictureIndia arrived in the West Indies with their confidence rocketing sky-high but in just over a week, the engines have come off. The two losses in Kingston mean they now find themselves in a position where even two wins won’t be enough to guarantee their progression. Both Sri Lanka and West Indies have the cushion of a bonus point and India will need to find at least one to improve their position. A loss won’t totally obliterate India’s chances either but will leave them hoping for the remaining results to work in their favour. West Indies, on the other hand, are sitting comfortably with nine points from two games and a win will confirm them as one of the finalists.India were rightly being showered with a lot of praise after their success in the Champions Trophy which was built on the energy the young shoulders brought. Since then, the players, as well as the captain, have proudly talked about them being the No. 1 side in the ODIs in a manner reminiscent of India’s Test team a couple of years back. But there are lessons to be learnt from the nosedive India took in Tests after that.Top sides are not dependent on a couple of players to pull them through every tricky situation. Top sides have attacks that are not neutralised by conditions. Top sides do not let everything through in the field all day after proclaiming themselves as the best fielding unit. Till India can bring the consistency to deliver in a variety of conditions, their hold on that No. 1 ODI ranking will remain slippery. One thing in their favour, however, is that they have a young team which has shown the right facets to be successful in the longer term.India’s free-flowing batsmen found the going tough on the slowish pitches at Sabina Park and with the conditions not likely to be too different in Port-of-Spain, the lesson for them is that once you are in, make it count. Chris Gayle did that in the first match, then Johnson Charles followed that route in the second and in the third, Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Tharanga proved how effective it can be. Rohit Sharma did the tough part in the first match before taking a wrong turn when the freeway beckoned.Virat Kohli fined for slow-over rate

India captain Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against Sri Lanka. The rest of the India players have been fined 10% of their fees after the side was found to be one over short.

India’s bowling remains a bigger worry and it remains to be seen how they regroup after the battering they received in the previous match. Shami Ahmed lacked rhythm and at times, his run-up reminded of Munaf Patel’s slow amble to the crease. Despite him being as guilty of leaking runs as anyone else, he could be the first head to roll, and the onus could be back on Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bring the bowling unit’s confidence back.West Indies’ bowling has thrived in home conditions. Their fast bowlers were the only ones who managed to make use of the moisture in the Sabina Park pitch and their medium-pacers and spinners have been tough to score off. With their long batting order in good nick, they are finally showing signs of extending their Twenty20 form to ODIs.Form guideWest Indies WWTLW (most recent first, last five completed matches)
India LLWWWIn the spotlightHis claim to fame maybe T20s, but after six years and 80 matches, you would expect Kieron Pollard to crack the ODI code. But he hasn’t. His average throughout his career has stayed below 30 and his underachievement in the format can be likened to how West Indies themselves have fared in ODIs – replete with talent, but nothing to show for it. Pollard has been generally found out by quality quick bowlers around the world, but in this series, he has two of the slower attacks in cricket, and in India, one of the weakest too. After scoring 0 and 4 in the series, it is high time he takes the advantage. In a line-up full of generous bowlers, R Ashwin boasts of an economy of less than five but for a lead spinner, he doesn’t buy his captain many wickets. After 55 ODIs, his best is 3 for 24. His numbers suffer further when he bowls outside the subcontinent. Two days ago, when Ashwin was introduced to rein in the Sri Lanka openers, he had no answer. India’s weakness in pace is well-known, but it’s the ineffectiveness of their spinners in this series that is worrying.Team newsWest Indies made one change to their squad for the Trinidad matches, bringing in fast bowler Jason Holder in place of the injured Ravi Rampaul, but they are likely to keep their pace combination of Kemar Roach and Tino Best to hustle the India batsmen. Dwayne Bravo, who was rested in the previous match as a precautionary measure following a groin strain, will return to lead the side at his home ground.West Indies (probable) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Dwayne Bravo (capt), 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Tino BestIndia felt Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s absence in their previous game as the first wicket that usually comes early took 39 overs to come. He could replace Shami Ahmed in the XI.India (probable) 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 M Vijay, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh YadavStats and trivia West Indies’ win-loss record against India at Queen’s Park Oval stands at 7-4 In this series, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the most economical of India’s frontline bowlers. He is No. 15 on the list Chris Gayle has four centuries against India, his most against any countryQuotes”The wicket last time was really slow and I just had a look, it has a bit of grass this time around, but it seems to be the same as the last time. I don’t think there is much of an adjustment needed as far as the conditions are concerned.”
“It’s like a dream come true for me. It’s always good to play in the Oval. But to be the captain of the West Indies team is something special.”
