Arsenal now very interested in Champions League attacker nicknamed “Mesut Özil”

Arsenal are now very interested in signing a Champions League attacker, who has been given the nickname “Mesut Özil” by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Gunners eyeing new additions in attack

The January transfer window is now just over one week away, and the Gunners are clearly keen on strengthening their options in attack, with it recently being revealed they have made contact over a deal for AFC Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo.

Mikel Arteta is said to be a huge fan of the Ghanaian, but the race is packed, with Tottenham Hotspur also keen, alongside Manchester United and Manchester City, with the latter two clubs in pole position to secure his signature.

In truth, Arteta may not need to splash the cash on a top forward in the upcoming window, given the breadth of options he already has available, including Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze.

However, it could make more sense to bring in an up-and-coming talent, who would perhaps be more content with receiving less game time, and the north Londoners have now set their sights on a new target.

According to a report from Foot Mercato, Arsenal are now very interested in signing Marseille attacker Darryl Bakola, but there could be competition for his signature from their Premier League rivals, with Newcastle United and Chelsea keen.

Bundesliga sides Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund are also named as potential suitors for the attacker, while Marseille are determined to keep hold of him, having recently submitted a concrete new contract offer.

However, with the French club hesitant to lose the youngster on a free, they could be willing to listen to bids.

January is set to be a ‘decisive month’ for Bakola, as there is no shortage of interest in his services, and there are indications he could be an exciting long-term addition to Arteta’s squad…

Bakola impressing in the Champions League

The 18-year-old has started to make regular cameo appearances for Marseille as a substitute this season, featuring seven times in Ligue 1, but perhaps his best performance came in the Champions League.

Indeed, the attacking midfielder was impressive on his debut in Europe’s elite competition, registering an assist against Newcastle United at the end of November, while also winning all three of the ground duels he contested.

There’s fierce competition for his signature…

After the game, in a joint interview with former Arsenal striker Aubameyang, the Gabonese striker said: “You should ask him what his nickname is, because I said he was going to make an assist.”

The Marseille starlet replied: “Mesut, Mesut Özil. Yesterday (Monday), before training, he nicknamed me that. I took it, and it worked. We’re happy.”

However, it is still early days for Bakola, who is yet to prove himself over a sustained period of time, and Arsenal should continue to monitor him further before making a concrete approach.

Official spotted as Spurs eye Kim Min-jae

Taking to Twitter, journalist Pedro Sepulveda of SIC Noticias has shared an interesting Tottenham Hotspur update involving a familiar transfer target in Fenerbache defender Kim Min-jae.

The Lowdown: Waited for Spurs in 2020…

Reliable reports out of South Korea in 2020 heavily indicated that the towering centre-back wanted to join Spurs.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Min-jae, targeted by both Tottenham and Lazio during his time in the Chinese Super League with Beijing Guoan, was apparently in favour of a move to north London over Italy despite his club accepting an offer from the Serie A side.

According to SPOTV News, as relayed by Korean football journalist Jason Lee, the 25-year-old was ‘waiting’ for Daniel Levy and co to make their final bid as he preferred to sign for ex-Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

Around a year-and-a-half on, it appears Tottenham aren’t done with the international defender.

The Latest: Sepulveda shares interesting update…

SIC Noticias reporter Sepulveda says Spurs, and by extension manager Antonio Conte, sent an official to run the rule over Min-jae in Turkey at the weekend.

Indeed, people from Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal, FC Porto and Juventus were spotted watching Fenerbache’s ace as his side drew 1-1 with Trabzonspor on Sunday.

The Verdict: Make a move…

It is believed by reliable sections of the press that Conte and managing director Fabio Paratici are targeting a centre-half signing this summer with the likes of Sven Botman, Alessandro Bastoni and Josko Gvardiol already linked (The Telegraph).

Min-jae, who is quite the physical presence at 6 foot 3, could come as a cheaper alternative to some of these big names going by his rumoured €20 million (£16.6m) asking price.

According to WhoScored, Min-jae has averaged more clearances per 90 domestically (4.1) than any Spurs regular in the Premier League.

Numbers like these could back his colossal presence in defence, even if there is an argument to be made that these numbers come in a less competitive division.

Nicknamed the ‘monster’ back in Korea for his imposing build, the central colossus’ physicality could however be suited to England’s top flight – with Min-jae also averaging more interceptions per 90 (2.1) than any Spurs star (WhoScored).

For a potential valuation of around £16-£17m, he stands out as a shrewd option.

Tottenham in frame for Belotti signing

Andrea Belotti could land at Tottenham Hotspur after his Torino contract expires, Italian outlet Tuttosport (via Sport Witness) report.

The lowdown

Belotti’s deal is due to expire in June, and Torino’s president Urbano Cairo has admitted that the player appears to have ‘no intention’ of renewing despite being presented with a ‘huge’ offer.

The striker has bagged 109 goals and provided 28 assists in 244 appearances for the club overall – a record Premier League pundit Paddy Kenny dubbed ‘incredible’ – but has only found the net four times in 16 outings this season amid injury troubles.

Last summer, he appeared of six of Italy’s seven matches at the European Championships, including a 30-minute cameo in the final against England. It was the first major trophy he had won in his career.

The latest

According to reports in Italy, via SW, most of the top sides in Serie A are showing little interest in Belotti, but Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are said to be admirers of their compatriot.

Belotti could wind up in the Premier League regardless, with unnamed mid-table sides also emerging as possible destinations.

The verdict

Spurs need an effective deputy for Harry Kane. They allowed Carlos Vinicius to return to SL Benfica at the end of his season-long loan and haven’t signed another striker in the two windows since to fill the apparent hole in their squad.

Indeed, Kane remains the only recognised centre-forward in Conte’s ranks.

Vinicius did manage to score ten goals for Spurs, but three of those came against eighth-tier side Marine in the FA Cup.

Belotti’s outstanding overall record suggests he would represent a step-up in quality.

All of a sudden, Spurs would go from lacking depth in the position to boasting an enviable pair of options, and it wouldn’t cost them a penny in transfer fees.

In other news, John Wenham is delighted by this development.

Celtic: McLeish on Dembele

Alex McLeish doesn’t expect Karamoko Dembele to get much game time for Celtic ahead of the expiry of his contract in the summer.

The lowdown

As it stands, Dembele will be leaving Celtic at the end of the 2021/22 campaign when his deal expires.

The 19-year-old is a product of the Hoops’ academy and has made nine appearances in total.

He missed Ange Postecoglou’s first 26 league matches in charge with a serious ankle injury.

But in the midweek win over St Mirren, he finally made his first appearance under the Australian, coming on for the final six minutes.

The latest

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish said Postecoglou would favour the players who have already earned his trust.

The outlook, then, could be somewhat bleak for Dembele in the coming months.

“I get the feeling with Postecoglou that he isn’t going to fire in the young ones and that means Dembele is not part of his plans,” the Sky Sports pundit said.

“He is focusing on the guys that he has invested in and put some thought into.

“He already knows his strategy for Celtic. When he knows what he can get out of people, these are the guys that he tends to play.

“That is just something I’ve noticed from observing him over a few months.”

The verdict

There’s little doubt about Dembele’s potential. L’Equipe (via 67 Hail Hail) have previously described him as a player with ‘extraordinary acceleration’ and agility, and predicted that he will enjoy a ‘great career’.

The immediate problem he faces at Celtic is competition for the right-wing role in the form of Liel Abada.

The summer signing has contributed 11 goals and eight assists since he arrived – more league goal contributions than anybody else in the Bhoys’ squad (via BBC Sport).

Given that Abada is only 20, he may have that spot locked down for a number of years, giving Dembele all the more reason to consider a departure.

In other news, Celtic’s latest target has emerged.

Tottenham hold loose Man City talks to sign James Trafford amid major Vicario worry

Tottenham have held loose talks over signing a ‘strong’ Man City player amid concerns over one of their most selected players, according to a new report this week.

Tottenham set for active January transfer window

As already confirmed by under-fire boss Thomas Frank, Spurs are set for an active January.

Co-sporting directors Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange, who were newly announced in the dual role earlier this season, are also set for their first transfer window officially working in unison, and it could be a crucial one.

Pressure is mounting on Frank after a dismal 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, and sections of supporters are convinced that the Dane isn’t the right man to take them forward in this new era post-Daniel Levy.

Reports suggest that Tottenham will look to back Frank with a new forward signing next month to alleviate the burden on Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus as their arguable two most important creators.

Dejan Kulusevski isn’t expected back any time soon, with Sweden boss Graham Potter predicting a March return for the winger and hopefully in time for their World Cup play-off against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, James Maddison is still undergoing his long-winded rehab from an ACL injury sustained in pre-season, so he could be out until nearer the end of 2025/2026.

Tottenham ready to bid up to £35m for PSG target after 'concrete' discussions

They’ve made a serious approach.

ByEmilio Galantini

Bringing in an alternative winger may well be crucial, with Fabrizio Romano reporting this week that Tottenham are aggressively pursuing Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo after news of his £65 million release clause.

Meanwhile, an attacker might not be the only item on Paratici and Lange’s agenda, with ‘growing concerns’ surrounding goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario following a litany of high-profile errors this season.

That is according to TEAMtalk and journalist Graeme Bailey, who report that Frank’s side are also in the market for a new shot-stopper.

Tottenham hold loose talks to sign Man City keeper James Trafford

As per their information, Tottenham have held exploratory talks over Man City goalkeeper James Trafford as Frank prepares to address worries about Vicario ahead of January.

The 23-year-old has emerged as a priority target for Spurs, who believe the young Englishman represents an ideal foundation for their goalkeeping position moving forward.

Trafford rejoined City in the summer following his impressive Championship campaign with Burnley, yet finds himself trapped behind Gianluigi Donnarumma in the pecking order at the Etihad.

City are understood to be receptive toward allowing Trafford’s exit to facilitate his development, with early conversations surrounding a temporary deal including a mandatory buy clause.

However, Pep Guardiola has already indicated his preference to keep the goalkeeper until the end of the season, though Trafford himself is pushing for regular action elsewhere.

Guardiola lavished praise on Trafford as a ‘strong’ character with a ‘big personality’ too, right after Tottenham upset City at Eastlands back in August.

This comes as Frank weighs up a potential replacement for Vicario, who’s been linked with a return to Italy with Inter Milan next year.

Trafford’s age and high ceiling make him an attractive proposition for Frank’s rebuild.

The England prospect combines senior experience with untapped potential for growth. His stature, shot-stopping credentials and comfortable distribution would also address Vicario’s deficiencies.

A structured loan would also give Tottenham financial flexibility, while evaluating whether Trafford can really handle the pressure at a top club challenging for European qualification and silverware.

Spurs: Journalist drops big Paratici update

Taking to Twitter in sharing his article for Foot Mercato, journalist Santi Aouna has shared a big update on transfer chief Fabio Paratici’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: PSG eye move…

As Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain eye a replacement for sporting director Leonardo, who has become disillusioned with his job at the Parc des Princes, Paratici is reportedly one of the candidates to replace him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed that the Italian is a target ‘in particular’, with contacts even taking place in recent months between both Paratici and PSG (Foot Mercato).

Tottenham’s chief was appointed as the north London club’s managing director last summer, overseeing all football-related matters on the pitch while chairman Daniel Levy takes a less hands-on role in the running of Spurs.

Paratici has been at the centre of mixed reviews for his transfer activity in the past but has been described as potentially ‘crucial’ in ‘giving a chance’ for Antonio Conte’s appointment as manager to work (Liam Twomey, The Athletic).

The Latest: Journalist drops big Paratici update…

Taking to Twitter, Aouna said that ‘new contacts took place this week’ between Paratici and PSG over the club’s sporting director role.

In his corresponding Foot Mercato article, the journalist explained that the 49-year-old is ‘tempted’ to quit Tottenham, apparently not taking too kindly to Conte’s ‘recent criticism’ of Spurs’ winter transfer window.

The Verdict: Potential big blow for Spurs

Paratici’s relationship with Conte, although allegedly tainted somewhat right now, could be a crucial factor in keeping the former Chelsea boss at Spurs, especially considering that the Lilywhites chief orchestrated his appointment in the first place.

This news of him being tempted to leave north London less than a year after his arrival could inadvertently throw Conte’s future at Tottenham into question also.

Bearing this in mind, Paratici’s potential departure may not be the best thing in the long run for Tottenham.

Leeds: Ian Poveda back at Thorp Arch

Leeds United starlet Ian Poveda is currently back at Thorp Arch as he continues his comeback from injury.

What’s the story?

During a Q&A for Leeds Live, Beren Cross revealed: “He’s back at Thorp Arch at the moment going through his rehab programme because it’s more convenient with where he lives rather than traipsing over to Blackburn every other day. He seems to be making good progress based on his Instagram profile. The expectation this season, if he gets back in time, would be for him to play for Blackburn again.

“When he was first sent out on loan the noises we heard suggested this was very temporary and there was a long-term home for Poveda at Leeds. Much depends on how his pre-season goes under Marsch, you would think. As we know, wingers are not readily used by the American in his system.”

Could be exciting under Marsch

While Poveda’s loan spell at Championship side Blackburn came to a shuddering halt back in November following injury, there’s no questioning that he has the kind of exciting talent and ability that could thrive under Marsch.

In fact, after seeing what Poveda produced after coming on as a substitute for Helder Costa against Liverpool last season, former Leeds striker Noel Whelan made it clear that the young winger was a refreshing change to the Portuguese man.

He told Football Insider: “There is something there that is not right because Poveda came on and did more in that short time than Costa did in the 60 minutes he was on the field.

“He is fourth in the pecking order in terms of wingers for me. Poveda has to come before him now. He is direct, exciting and wants to take people on. He wants to do his job as a winger and Costa does not. He plays it safe and he’s negative. At least Poveda runs at people. He is positive and that is what a winger should do.”

Paul Robinson added to the £10k-a-week forward’s admirers, saying last year: “I think we’re going to see Poveda come through next season. Leeds have signed him for a reason, Bielsa knows he’s a top, top player.”

While there has been a change in manager, Poveda coming back from injury and returning to Leeds this summer could give the Whites an intriguing option heading into next season.

Given he’s only played 20 times for the first-team at Elland Road, Whites fans should be excited at the fact he’s still considered a long-term prospect from those behind-the-scenes.

Everton must finally unleash Vitaliy Mykolenko

Everton welcome Premier League leaders Manchester City to Goodison Park on late Saturday afternoon, hoping to bounce back from their very disappointing 2-0 defeat to Southampton last time out.

Frank Lampard’s side have picked up just the one win in their past eight top-flight games, and it’s a run of form that has dragged them into the midst of a relegation battle for the second-half of this season.

The Toffees have been dogged by injuries and illnesses, but one of those returnees, Vitaliy Mykolenko, must surely be in line for a comeback against City this weekend.

The Ukraine international only arrived in the January transfer window, but has been unable to make much of an impact thus far, making just one sole appearance in the Premier League against Norwich.

In his absence, Jonjoe Kenny has recently stepped up for Lampard to play as a right-footed left-back, but with City’s devastating attack, Mykolenko must come into the line-up.

Speaking after his arrival, he said: “I like to play on the front foot and get forward when I can.  Modern football demands that full-backs are able to attack as well as defend. I think I am a versatile defender who can get up and down the pitch.

“But I believe desire and commitment are the most important attributes and I will aim to bring those qualities. I hope it won’t take me too long to settle in and get used to the style of football.”

As per Whoscored, Mykolenko has been a particularly impressive performer in recent years in European competitions, both in the Champions League and Europa League for former club Dynamo Kyiv.

He has a career average of 1.8 interceptions and 2.2 tackles per game, with the latter number actually good enough to rank him top among the entire Everton squad this season in the Premier League.

If Lampard is looking to breathe some fresh air into his team, then finally bringing Mykolenko into the fold after his recent absence would surely give the club and the fans a welcome shot in the arm.

The £12.5m-rated star would add some much-needed quality to this struggling Everton side.

Meanwhile, this Everton starlet is impressing behind-the-scenes at Finch Farm…

Ollie Watkins off-colour in Arsenal defeat

Aston Villa fell to to a second consecutive Premier League defeat this afternoon as Arsenal beat them 1-0 at Villa Park in the lunchtime kick-off.

Bukayo Saka’s goal on the half-hour mark was enough to separate the two sides, whilst Villa defender Tyrone Mings was on the wrong end of a controversial decision, with some suggestions that he could have been sent off for a tackle on the goalscorer.

Steven Gerrard’s side remain ninth in the league, with numerous top-flight matches postponed due to the FA Cup quarter-finals taking place this weekend.

Having won three games in a row prior to last weekend’s defeat to West Ham, the Villa manager will certainly be disappointed with the subsequent defeats, albeit against two Champions League-chasing teams.

The 41-year-old will also be disappointed with the performance of Ollie Watkins, who was off-colour at Villa Park today.

Bad day for Watkins

According to SofaScore, the 26-year-old had just 22 touches during his 82 minutes on the pitch, losing the ball on ten occasions at a rate of every 2.2 touches. Moreover, the only shot that he could muster ended up being blocked, whilst he also failed to complete a single dribble.

Watkins was also careless on occasion with his passing, ending the afternoon with a 57% passing accuracy as he completed just eight out of his attempted 14 passes.

With Gerrard reverting back to a 4-3-3 with the Englishman as the lone striker, there was certainly a lack of a physical presence up front, with the forward winning just one of seven attempted duels.

The 41-year-old eventually decided to make a straight swap after 82 minutes by bringing on Danny Ings, a signal that it was an afternoon to forget for the ex-Brentford marksman.

This season we certainly hasn’t seen the best of Watkins, with the striker scoring seven goals so far this term compared to the 14 he netted in the top flight in 2020/21. A six-game drought was ended in Villa’s 2-0 win at Brighton last month with the 26-year-old netting the decisive goal against the Seagulls and then finding the net against Southampton the following week.

However, it is now three games without a goal for Watkins, something which is becoming a regular occurrence in recent months, with the striker certainly capable of more frequent goal returns.

The West Midlands club have invested heavily on strikers over the past two summers, with the 26-year-old joining from Brentford in 2020 for a then club-record fee of £28m before Ings was lured from Southampton for £25m last summer.

This season, the duo have scored a combined 12 goals, rarely both appearing on the pitch at the same time. Today shows that it is certainly a puzzle which Gerrard is still trying to solve.

At 26, there is no doubt that Watkins can still improve massively, and there have been glimpses of brilliance on occasion when playing in claret and blue. In fact, last season saw the striker called up for England, despite having what he called a “stinker” against Newcastle shortly prior to the call-up.

He now needs to find consistency in his goalscoring in order to get back into the Three Lions reckoning and show that today’s performance was a rare off-day.

Ferguson relishing Stoke test

Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that his Manchester United team are aware of the physical challenge posed by Stoke, and are ready to combat Tony Pulis’ men on Tuesday at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils suffered a setback at the weekend by being eliminated from the FA Cup by Liverpool, and are currently three points behind Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

Although the Scottish coach knows his team are in for a tough game against The Potters, he is looking forward to it.

“You know what Tony Pulis’ team will be like, they are the same all the time,” Ferguson told The Guardian.

“They will be 100% committed and they always get stuck in. You have to cope with that. To be honest, I always enjoy it to.

“It was like when we used to play Wimbledon. No one used to look forward to playing against them but my team started to because it was a physical challenge and in terms of taking the ball and playing football.

“Stoke are a different team altogether but they still have the same qualities of never giving in, so it is always a good challenge for us,” he stated.

United have a critical month, in which they take on Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, and Ferguson knows that his team must be at their best to retain their Premier League crown.

“It is a big programme. From the middle of January until we go to Tottenham, it looked quite a daunting programme.

“But when you go back years ago in our title campaigns, we have always had periods of must win-games in a row and that is what we have here. It is important to keep on City’s coat-tails and hopefully come the important part of the season, we still are,” he concluded.
